Rating: Summary: Considering the Horse: Tales of Problems Solved and Lessons Review: Having read another of Mark Rashid's books, Horses Don't Lie, I was disappointed in this one. I thought it would give more information about communication and "reading" horse body language. I think Mr. Rashid takes for granted that readers will completely understand the lessons of each of his anecdotal stories. However, the only true lesson I learned from this book is one I've already learned from my own horse: to try to analyze a horses's actions, one must try to think like the horse, always keeping in mind the horse's "fright and flight" genetic programing. I don't think I'll buy any more of Mr. Rashid's books. I'm thinking they all say pretty much the same thing.
Rating: Summary: Beyond the five stars Review: Here is a book that excels beyond description. I must admit that Mark Rashid is a gift to horses and I sure hope there would be more people like him. I cannot begin to express how inspirational this book had been. Not only is he a great horseman, but he is also a master at writing.'Considering the Horse' is less of a problem solver and more of an attitude adjuster. Don't get me wrong, Mark addresses common problems in this book and provides innovative and effective methods of solving them. It is his suggestions that will be changing many traditional point of views. He does not force his ideas on you, but supports them with logical explanations backed by evidence from real life. Which brings me to the next point: the book's individuality stems from the fact that it is presented in true story format rather than text-book style. I think this format aids in delivering Mark's message in a subtle voice, allowing the reader to absorb the information and start thinking! Mark addresses problems such catching uncatchable horses, picking up feet, stopping unstopable horses, ground manners, loading, headshyness, mounting problems, and balking. He begins by explaining how he decided on his approach and clearly illustrates different situations where different approaches should be taken. From easy quick-fixes to deep-rooted problems.. everything is explained in his entertaining and enlightening stories. He closes the book with a deeply touching story and a lesson for mankind that brought me to tears. I have read his latest book 'Horses Never Lie' before this one and I find both books equally educational. Mark's passion for horses is evident in every word he writes and as I mentioned before, he is also a gifted writer. I believe that he is reaching out to the horse community, offering his knowledge to benefit as many horses in the world as possible. Five stars don't do him or his books justice.
Rating: Summary: Great Natural Horsemanship with No Gimmicks! Review: I am halfway through this book and am loving it. I can't help but wonder if the trainer that Mark refers to in the part about catching hard-to-catch horses with a supposed "magic rope" is Pat Parelli. Any guesses out there? I'd love to know if anyone else has the same hunch.
Rating: Summary: This is the best general horse training book Review: I consider this book my horse bible, a must have for any one who is around horses. It is easy and fun to read because of the storybook format (for both horse and non-horsey people), and the information sticks in your head. It gives you great tools to work safely around horses and deal with a wide range of potential problems. And the best part is that the book is true to the title; it always keeps the welfare for the horse in mind.
Rating: Summary: a wonderful journey into the mind of the horse Review: I first read "Considering the Horse" and was totally overwhelmed by Mr. Rachid's understanding and insight into the mind of the horse. I immediately read "A Good Horse is Never a Bad Color" and found it equally riveting. I am about to order yet a third book by this talented communicator, not only to horses but to humans via the written word.
Rating: Summary: This is a very informatine book! Review: I have been looking for information on solving problems surrounding my horses. I have found this book great with helping me solve them. It takes the point of view from the horse and rider, and does not use force in teaching. I have used some techniquics and found them to work wonders. Both my horses are much happier now, and so am I.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book Ever Written Review: I have lots of books on horse behavior, horse psychology, etc., but this book is better than all the rest put together. I have a young mare who is my first horse at the age of 40plus, she is quite nervous at times which doesn`t do my nerves any good either! This book has been a great help in my ways of dealing with her & we now seem to have a closer partnership. If one thing wasn`t working with her, then I`d approach the problem in a different way as Mark suggests, & we`d finally sort the conflict out. The one thing that struck me after reading this book, was how much calmer I was if she started playing up. I just had to think how Mark, or the old man, would deal with the situation & immediately became calm & resolute in my actions. My mare obviously sensed this & became calm herself. I have just read the book again & am about to order his other one. If you want to solve your horses problems then this book is a must. It is not a book saying you must do this or that, but is a book saying this may work, or because all horses are different then this other way may work, or you may have to find a solution yourself. After reading this book the solution to your problem will be easy to see. If I had to part with all my horse books apart from one, this would be the one left on the shelf
Rating: Summary: All horse owners should be required to read this book Review: I have read all three of Mr. Rashid's books and have passed my copies around to all my riding club members. His approach, to "consider" the horse's point of view, is so simple, but so few of us practice this approach. I wish he had written this series 30 years ago - I would have not made so many mistakes. This should be a "must read" for anyone who owns a horse, or anyone who is thinking of owning a horse. Well written and uncomplicated, it reads like a story, rather than a "how-to." I found it hard to put it down and quickly ordered the other two. Definitely read this book!
Rating: Summary: Must read for any horse person Review: I have started riding again and plan to get my own horse(s) in the next year or so. I have collected several different books on horse care, horse problems, etc. This book was great. From the first few pages I was hooked and read it cover to cover. Most horse books that I've gotten I have only scanned the pages. This book is great because it tells stories about particular horses, their problems, and how the problems were overcome, all by taking the time to "consider" how the horse feels about a situation. This book was really great reading, and I would suggest it for any horse lover.
