Rating: Summary: It's like having a dog/english dictionary of basic phrases. Review: For several years I've taught pet level obedience classes to folks who love their dogs, but don't understand them at all; most of my duos have learned the cues together anyway and performed them adequately. Sometimes that's enough, and all is well. Often, however, the real reason the human drug the dog to class in the first place was to make their dog understand them - to make the relationship real. I've done a pretty good job of creating a step-by-step plan for owners to follow to shape behaviors and willy-nilly manage to communicate with the dog so the relationship does improve. This book, though, provides a simple, accurate, easy to understand explanation of what's long been intuitively obvious to me but not to the non-dog-speaking student. Thank you so much for giving me this translation device.
Rating: Summary: The Dog Listener Review: I have five unruly dogs that I needed some serious help with. Jan gave me the anwers in this book. After investing countless hours and hundreds of dollars on other obedience books and classes, I am trying Jan's Amichien Bonding Techniques and my dogs are finally under control. Thank you Jan Fennel and Monty Roberts! Keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: Not sufficiently applicable Review: I was disappointed by the number of pre-existing conditions that seem necessary for Jan's training techniques to work, if they do. She bases much of her advice on her own experience: that of a single woman with four adult large breed dogs living in the countryside of Great Britain. But for someone like me - the married owner of a single, very young small breed puppy living on an upper floor of a city apartment with no yard in sight - well, none of this seems to apply. I was especially frustrated by the sections where her success seemed to hinge upon the fact that she has her own pack of traditionally-trained dogs that her newer animals were obviously emulating. I have had greater success with clicker training.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book on our Canine Friends Review: This is a must read for anyone looking to get a new puppy/dog. The four steps of Amichen Bonding are easy to follow with great rewards. I have become the leader of my pack, the Alpha Male, and my dog knows it, respects me, and does not create problems at all.
Rating: Summary: Wow! It really works! Review: I am so grateful for this book! I have two HUGE dogs whom I love very much. I have never minded how excited they get when I first get home. But others are not as amused to be mauled by 210 pounds of maniacal raving canine exuberance. I have tried the old standbys: stepping on their back feet, kneeing them in the chest, scolding them, and nothing worked. I bought this book with much scepticism and a jaundiced eye (I've tried others). I am pleased to report that the first time I tried Jan's techniques I saw a huge difference. And they're embarrassingly simple to do! You don't need props, you don't need to behave like an idiot, you don't have to be The Big Meanie...just act like the Alpha dog, as instructed by Jan, and watch the transformation. I thank you Jan, my mother-in-law, real estate agent and mailman thank you, and my "babies", Ruck and Xena thank you!
Rating: Summary: The Dog Listener Review: This is a great book - lots of real life examples and recommendations on how to follow Jan Fennell's methodology. I especially like the quiet, controlled approach she recommends, and the "no punishment" philosophy.
Rating: Summary: Showed me a lot about my dog's. Review: I enjoyed the book very much it made me look at my dog's in a different light. I have alway's had dog's for as long as I can remember. I had dog's that had bad habit's and I could not break them. I now know what the dog might be thinking and I have a better understanding of how to handle it. I would tell anyone who has a dog or is in the line to get one to read this book. I keep it beside my bed and look at it all the time. I think everyone should own it. John
Rating: Summary: Revolutionary methods have changed my house! Review: I came home from work one day and my wife was excited to see me as she said, "come look at this." She called our dog, a seven year old Westie, into his area where he is always reluctant to go. But this day he walked right in without making a scene. She told me she had seen Jan Fennell on television that day and had simply tried one of the concepts she talked about. We got the book, and immediately our Westie has settled right in to our new pecking order, and has significantly settled down.We are more than impressed with the insight that this book gives. It has greatly improved our relationship with our dogs, and I would recommend this book to any dog owners. Understanding the canine culture is fascinating.
Rating: Summary: The Dog Listener Review: This book is well written and easy to understand. The frequent referance to wolf pack mentality is right on. I have watched PBS documentaries on wolf packs and observed my own two dogs and the behavioral similarity is astounding. I think Jan has nailed it with this book. I'm presently applying the techniques Jan has developed to my dogs and the results are as predicted. I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to gain control of their dog and to those who want to start out right with their new puppy. Dale Friedly
Rating: Summary: Good Points - Poor Writing Review: The points covered by Ms. Fennell are excellent, but the way in which she presents them make this a difficult book to read. She uses too much verbage, and her examples are laboriously drawn out..
