Rating: Summary: Yet another rave review Review: I wish every dog owner I know (and don't know) would read and implement Jan Fennell's method...it really works...I have a basically well trained adult dog who, in the last year, was starting to develop anxiety related behavioral problems. A friend of mine from the UK gave me Jan's book. Her method explained what was going on and, more importantly, gave me a solution that made sense...you will notice results right away if you follow the amichien bonding process.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: This is a must read for all dog owners and future owners. I wish I read this sooner! She tells wonderful stories about dogs with common problem and then how to non violently fix the problem. Our Aussie was a good dog before but after reading and implementing her methods we have a WONDERFUL dog! If you want more detailed training steps get her second book (also wonderful) which has less background/stories and more training examples.

Rating: Summary: If your dog is your child, you need to read this book! Review: Jan Fennell does a fabulous job of explaining the dynamics of our puppies' roots-- the wolf pack. In her descriptions, she delves into the underlying causes of some of the behavior of dogs that many humans find puzzling. You'll have many "aha!" moments while reading this book. If you've ever looked at your dog and thought "what in the world..." you may find out "what" in this book. She teaches you how to communicate with your dog-- this is the good part-- in behavioral terms. So it's actually works! She tells you what you should be communicating to your dog, how to act it out, and why it's so crucial. She also gives workable solutions to some of the most troublesome problems that many people have with their dogs.
Rating: Summary: An outstanding approach to manipulating the canine mind Review: I cannot say enough good things about this book! Jan truly does follow in the steps of Monty Roberts, her mentor. While there will always be controversial evidence between the nature of the wolf, and our domestic dogs, she really has nailed the behavioral patterns on the head. This book proves invaluable to those looking to understand their dogs' motives, not just fix their "problems". In all actuallity, I am a true believer that almost all behavioral "problems" some how root back to being people "problems". Jans methodology really is a heartfelt understanding of the way the canine mind works. She, like so many others, looked for a way to enhance communication between her furry friends and herself. While I don't feel that you should fall head first into ANY concepts, as different creatures require other methods and forms of stimulation, this book provides an outstanding outline to common sense, gentle, and effective training and manipulation of the canine mind The theory is simple, open your mind and your heart to accept "non-conventional" ways of thinking. I always knew there was a better way for animals, and seeing it in print, the concept is plain as day. Exercising these ideas with my own dogs, has enhanced our already loving relationship. I am a follower of Monty Roberts's methodology, and now along with Jan's, and it all amounts to be an amazing and powerful experience. If you want to explore more animal psychology, Monty's book, From My Hands To Yours, is equally as fantastic. He also has a book, Horse Sense For People, which conveys these non-violent and powerful concepts of communication, to a manner where human to human relationships can be improved.
Rating: Summary: assumptions not science Review: I am glad this book has seemed to help so many people. Personally I have been very annoyed by her weak reasoning and bad science. Much of her advice IS good but not for the reasons she thinks! First of all, although dogs are related to wolves, new research is showing that wolves took a little detour before they turned into domestic dogs. The intermediate animal was the tamer village dog that lived on the outskirts of villages feeding off the dumps. The straight from wolves to dogs theory suffers a little when you learn that places like Wolf Park have been raising wolf litters by hand for years and have still not managed to produce a "tame" wolf. In the book "Dogs, A Startling new View...." the Coppingers discuss this in detail. What does this mean for wolf pack theory?? The scavenger dogs don't have a firm hierarchy like wolves do. One of my other objections is that some of her advice can really lead you to trouble if you have a truly dominant dog. Staring directly in a dog's eyes is a threat in dog language, but she advises you to do this. If you have a good relationship with your dog they will forgive your impoliteness for staring at them, and eventually they will seek eye contact on their own, but if someone reads this book and tries this advise out on a dog they don't know very well, a dog that doesn't trust them yet, they could be in for a bite! Also petting on the top of the head is a dominant act and should be done with caution on a dominant dog. OK I could nitpick all day, but here are the books you should read INSTEAD: "The Other End Of The Leash" by Patricia McConnell- A fabulous discussion of how dogs communicate with us and how dogs see us. Based in science- this woman is an ethologist"The Power of Positive Dog Training" by Pat Miller- step by step discussion of basic training methods. "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson Read books based on the science of dog training, not someone's assumptions!
Rating: Summary: A must read for all dog owners Review: This book is amazing and yet its all common sense once you really think about it. I started this approach a week ago and I began seeing results within a day!
Rating: Summary: Forget the horror stories! Review: It sounds crazy, but it actually works. If you follow the tips in this book, and are consistent with the words that you use throughout your household to your dog/s, you will be amazed at how quickly they can work, even with mature dogs. Our puppy has excelled in his obedience classes because of the advice that we have taken from this book. A MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: Reading this book will make you a "dog person" Review: we have three dogs and two of them were beginning to be a bit of a problem for us. They are young and like any adolescents were trying to get away with things to test our leadership. They were doing marvelously at showing us how out of control we were. I looked at a lot of dog books for answers to our problem, and some were fine but they just didn't click with me or my husband and we couldn't maintain the disciplines that the books called for. I liked this book because it wasn't preachy and it was an easy and interesting read. It made a lot of sense. It helped me understand what was going on in our dog's minds and why they would do what they did. The best part was that we saw immediate results and the whole lot of us are a lot happier now. I think this book should come home with any new puppy.
Rating: Summary: Just when I thought I knew dogs... Review: Fantastic and EASY method. This book changed my relationship with my dogs in less than a week. I have had dogs all my life and surely thought I understood them well enough. Every dog I have ever had has been obedience trained in one way or another. In fact, I have one in training right now. There is no inconsistency between the book and the class we are taking. However, the easy, easy, easy suggestions in the book have changed and improved our relationships. That applies to my ten-year old and the almost three-year old. Just try it for yourself.
