Rating: Summary: An Excellent Read Review: I love this book. It should be required reading for all of us as we prepare for the next mellennium. The search for truth demands the highest standards of analysis and critical thinking. Carl Sagan shows us the way to keep true.
Rating: Summary: Engrossing, beautifully written, and Sagan's most wonderful Review: I am a 19 year old whose been a fan of Carl Sagan since reading the book Contact when she was 13. Dr. Sagan is an impressive writer, creating romance between science and common folks like myself. Since I have read most of Dr. Sagan's books, the Demon-Haunted world strike me as the most magnificient book he ever written (although the others are wonderful too!!). I am a very religious person, and I know that a lot of religious people have a problem with Dr. Sagan's POV of God. But I think that everyone of those persons should read this book. It scientifically debunks things like witchcraft, alien sightings, faith healings, etc. This book is a must-have for every Carl Sagan fan. He have truly lost one of the most wonderful minds of the 20th Century.
Rating: Summary: Buy extra copies of this book for your friends and family!!! Review: Scientists, priests, psychologists, skeptics, believers -- everybody should read this book. It provides insight into why we believe so much nonsense, how we can recognize it as nonsense, and how to stop its spread. A must read for anyone who wants to think critically.
Rating: Summary: There should be more bestsellers like this Review: A wonderful, clearly written book that strives to show just how little the American public understands what science really is, and why it is a necessary discipline in a free and democratic society. My main objection is that Sagan is a bit too gentle with the purveyors of nonsense. James Randi covered the same subject matter, in a much sterner, more thorough, and more entertaining manner, in his book, "Flim-Flam." If you liked "The Demon-Haunted World," you'll devour "Flim-Flam."
Rating: Summary: Science as Whistling in the Dark Review: Well, Brother Sagan (RIP) saw it coming, and he tried to put his finger in the dike, but he doesnt really understand it, and he debunks what is too easy to debunk, without acknowledging the true mysteries that Science as-yet is clueless about, e.g. Synchronicity, Prayer, Near-Death-Experience, Experience of Holy Spirit or Kundalini, Cosmic Consciousness, Multidimensionality, Parallel Universes, etc. etc. Tackling UFOs is too easy. Jung did it before Sagan, and with more insight. But the chapter on 'Baloney Detection' is a good and valuable synopsis of critical thinking that should be required in all high schools. All in all, this book strikes me as more revealing of the limitations, ignorance and superstitions of Western Scientism, than of the 'madness of crowds'. And, anyway, the Demons really _are_ out there! Whistling in the Dark wont make 'em go away for long! a guide to Tipler, Penrose, and Capra;
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read in my entire life Review: Simply read it!
Rating: Summary: Exorcising scientificism Review: The demon haunted world is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Written in a clear, accessible language, this book reveals the man behind the curtain, making the lay person feel close to the mysteries of science. Carl Sagan succeeds in every aspect to convey his message of fearless thinking. To put false science behind and hold on to the few thruths we are certain of is the main objective of this book, and one feeld compelled to do so in a most pleasurable manner.
Rating: Summary: Food for Thought... Review: Once again Dr. Sagan has served up strong food for thought. However this time, rather than sharing the wonders of the universe with us, he asks why so many of us are not interested, and what that means to our future. His insight into the world of science coupled with his natural gift to entertain the unenlightened, make us all understand his fears about why we're so willing to follow the easy path of "pseudo-science" rather than struggle to find the truth, which is much more difficult. Dr. Sagan's contributions towards explaining the cosmos, both within and without, will always remain a force of inspiration for us all.
Rating: Summary: Will this book change your life? Review: This is honestly the best piece of non-fiction work that I have ever read. Sagan is a phenomenal popularizer of science. His thoughts on skepticism are excellent. Give it a read and you will never think the same way again!
Rating: Summary: A page turning view of science in today's world Review: Brace yourself for a stuningly engrossing discussion by the world renown scientist, Carl Sagan, on the subject of science in relation to our modern world. Go back in history to the beginning of time and trace the development of scientific, and not so scientific, thought leading up to the present day. Delve into the relationships between science, religion, magic, alien life forms, and many more fascinating interfaces that you may never have contemplated before. An extraordinarily well written text by a well loved hero of our time, who brings scientific principles to the common man in understandable fashion. Carl Sagan may be gone, but with this work, he certainly will not be forgotten.
