Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Innovative and Comprehensive
Review: Dr. D. Kim Rossmo has done an excellent job of presenting the theories and practice of criminal profiling in general, and geographic profiling in specific. His book is thoroughly researched and based on empirical studies which demonstrate he is a true pioneer in criminology. It should be noted that geographic profiling can only be tested on solved cases, since it is essential to know where the criminal lives to prove of the validity of any geographic profiling methodology. Dr. Rossmo has proven that geographic profiling is a useful tool to support investigations of serial crimes. Well-written, comprehensive, and innovative--this work could be used as a textbook in any criminology class covering the field of criminal profiling.

Summary: Geographic Profiling: A criminal profiling "compass."
Review: Geographic profiling resulted from a seven-year research project at the School of Criminology, Simon Fraser University. As a police officer walking a beat in Vancouver's Skid Row, I wanted to try to use knowledge from the ivory tower of academia for some of the problems found on the "mean streets." Geographic profiling is an investigative methodology that determines the most probable area of offender residence in cases of serial murder, rape, arson, bombing, and robbery. The Vancouver Police Department has been supplying this service to police agencies worldwide since 1990, and to date, with geographic profilers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the British National Crime Faculty, we have worked on over 2,000 crimes in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. This book is primarily a reference work, an attempt to consolidate the research and experience in this field so that others - primarily police officers, academics, researchers, students, and interested individuals - may have an opportunity to learn more about this new and interesting area in criminal profiling. In addition to explaining the underlining theories and methods, the book provides quantitative data, performance results, and several case examples, including the London Mardi Gra bomber, the Lafayette Southside Rapist, and the Abbotsford Killer. While I am the author, the book represents the efforts and support of dozens of people from both academia and policing, and I would like to thank them. Criminal predators are often difficult to apprehend, and we have to do everything we can to bring the latest research and technology to this task. I hope readers find the book interesting, but even more so, I hope they find it helpful in their own research and investigative efforts. D. Kim Rossmo, PhD, Detective Inspector, Geographic Profiling Section, Vancouver Police Department, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Summary: A Complete Guide to the Subject
Review: I use this book in my Geographic Profiling course and the students read it and keep it(they don't sell it after the final exam). The bibliography alone is worth the price of the book. Rossmo presents an excellent piece of cutting-edge research that is written to effectively communicate with a broad audience.

Summary: Geographic Profiling
Review: In this thoroughly researched, meticulously documented and clearly written book, Dr. Rossmo has compellingly demonstrated geographic profiling to be both a powerful tool in the investigation of serial crime as well as an illuminating foundation for future research. This groundbreaking work is a gift of genius with immense potential for both "front-line" criminal investigators as well as academic criminologists.

Summary: Ground breaking and well researched
Review: This book is a real innovation in the field of crime research. The area of criminal profiling is populated by no shortage of Walter Mittys with no empirical grounding, so is it refreshing to find a text that cements the theories of this complex and fascinating area with empirical analysis of real cases. The text is well written and opens up a new area of criminal behaviour analysis to students and police officers alike. This book will undoubtedly become a key text in the field of criminal profiling and a welcome replacement to the long list of dull criminal psychology books that do not tell you anything useful, because the ivory tower authors have no practical experience.
