Summary: Dr. Axelrod's Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes
Review: I was disappointed in this book since I already had the Mini Atlas and expected the full sized atlas to have the same features (such as text, and helpful information) as the Mini Atlas, just more of them. Instead it is nothing but photos from cover to cover.
This book just sits on the bookshelf untouched since the Mini Atlas more than covers most of the fish available out there - for a much more reasonable cost.

There are also some inaccuracies in the fish species.

You could buy a few better books for the cost of just this one, or just spend one-fourth of the price and buy the Mini Atlas.

Summary: The Freshwater Aquarium Bible
Review: Impossible to offer more colour photographs of so many freshwater aquarium fishes in a single book. Enormous volume at an incredibly low price for such a lot of pics and pages. Details for every fish (virtually every fish available in the aquarium trade, and many that probably are already extinct or never been offered for sale) are under every pic. With more than 7,600 photos shown, it is normal that some are better than others regarding sharpness and trueness of colour, but the average is extremely good, allowing an easy identification. A must for the serious hobbyist.

Summary: Ultimate atlas by ultimate authority, but NO TEXT
Review: My title says it all. If you want the ultimate pictoral atlas, written by perhaps the ultimate authority of all time, look no further. There is no other book in its class, and probably never will be (except future editions of this one!)

However, aside from a an intro, index, and few stats on each fish (preferred food, temp, pH, H, etc), there is NO TEXT at all in this volume. Yup, none.

Summary: unclear photos,no informations on diseases&breeding
Review: The cover is deformable. On the pictures male and female differences are not mentioned. Also the names of the fishes must not only be mentioned in latin alphabetics.

Summary: The Best Freshwater Fish Book
Review: There are a huge number of aquarium fish books out there, but none of them equal to this in size or number of photos. I own the 3rd edition of this book from 1990,and it has over 5000 beautifull photographs! The text is very short and easy to understand. I am a freshwater fish keeper myself,so when identifying some of the unusual fish species I have, this book is a great help for me. Something unusual with this book is that it covers many species that are not suitable for aquarium - that`s good, because when you see a 5-inch juvenile redfin catfish, can you imagine that it will grow to a 4-feet monster!Naw...So this book also keep you back from unsuitable species. Some species are especially treated in this book - for example, there are more than 30 species photos of the guppy!Over all, this book is a treasure for anyone interested in aquarium fish, and cannot be skipped, although the price is high. When I first received it for my 12th birthday,I was happier than ever!So go get it!

Summary: Using can be difficult
Review: This book has numerous pictures but I have found it hard to correlate the pictures to descriptions and information about specific species. I find it very hard to just flip through and see a species and read about it.
I really prefer the Aquarium Atlas series which I feel is easier to find a species and get the information about it and easier to just flip through and read information about a species and be able to see it right there.
Overall Dr. Axelrod's Atlas is still a fine book with some valuable information.

Summary: Dr. Axelrod`s Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes
Review: This book is a must. Yes it`s full of pictures, but the simple identification key tells you the basics of almost every fish avaliable on the market today and then some. This book is very helpfull in identifying fish that are sold and possibly mismarked by the wholesaler or the retailer. The joy of fish keeping is just like any other hobby, find the rare and hard to find. This book will help you in that search. Remember, common names are just that, common. This book will tell you what you are about to buy, or what you already have in your tank.

Summary: It is an guide to all freshhwater aquarium fishes
Review: This book is an idea for any person looking for an ulimate guide to freshwater fishes. Over 7,800 photos makes it an 5 stars plus book. Covers all the familes kept in aquariums. Covers all species in aquariums. Just about every little oddball species are cover in full color. It just about covers every little species of freshwater any hoppyists is exexted to see.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Lacks organization and information
Review: This book makes a good reference for finding "what is what"; although, the fish are listed using scientific names, which makes associating fish faces with common names very difficult. Once you have found what the name of the fish is, your finished. This book provides very little information about any given fish.

Summary: The big daddy picture book!
Review: This is one of my favorite books. It provides information and more importantly photos on nearly 2000 fish. The information gives you the basics about each fish, how big they get, what they eat, are they agressive, etc. But the best aspect is the photos. With over 1900 photos it is the first book I go to when I want to look up a fish. Or when I'm thinking of what to put in that empty tank I'll often browse through this book looking for neat fish.

This book gives you the most for your money!
