Review: A must have for anyone who cares about their families' health and the well being of future generations. I've read many references on nutrion and this is by far the most consise, least confusing and specific reference available.

Summary: Excellent Body-Mind-Spirit Nutrition
Review: As a practitioner of Medical QiGong (a type of Oriental Energy/Body work), I turn to this book for the majority of my clients. It is extremely interesting in the way that it presents information from an Eastern point of view, and then applies it to our Western minds. The dietary recommendations are very common everyday items that are easy to incorporate into your current way of eating.

I highly recommend it to be included as a consideration in every healing process. The chapter on Cancer and Regeneration diets, great for chronic illness of many types, is one of the best I've ever seen.

Summary: Essential Knowledge for Healthy Living in a Toxic World
Review: I found this book three years ago in a health food store. Soon after that, I attended a "nutrition and awareness" retreat and a "healing with whole foods" course given by the author. Since then I have gradually incorporated more and more of the knowledge and principles presented in this book into my life. I have recovered from severe anemia and deficiency that I inflicted upon myself as a result of my ignorance and arrogant attitude about health and nutrition. I have learned how to prepare and cook foods in a healthy way. I have become acutely aware of the numerous toxins and pathogens that we are all exposed to on a daily basis. I have cleaned up my body and my environment and continue to make more improvements as time goes on. Paul Pitchford and his book set me on this road toward greater self-awareness and personal responsibility. The author's presentation is very balanced, offering basic knowledge of eastern and western perspectives on diet and health that support the needs of vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. The book achieves its purpose of serving as a complete and thorough reference on the health-producing attributes of whole foods. It contains no fads, no hype, only essential information for living as well as we can in our very toxic world.

Summary: Valuable but Biased
Review: I have learned alot from this book, mainly on how to cook whole foods, grains, seaweeds, alot of info on microalgeas, and how to sprout, and for that it has been an invaluable resource. Also some good tips on cooking for children, weening cereals, etc. But I find the treatments to be slightly biased and a little dangerous.

For example, night sweats could be caused by a yang excess or a yin deficiency. The treatments for both are almost opposite. Knowing the difference is very difficult unless you have some knowledge of Chinese medicine or are seen by a practioner. I, for example am both yin and yang deficient, and eliminating the building foods, as Pitchford recommends for excesses, wasn't helping me and could have had devastating conquences. Pitchford seems to sway towards this diet, recommending a liver cleanse as the first step toward balancing most problems.

He is also a devout vegan, which he explains at the beginning of the book. And it is this diet he is pushing, while in traditional Chinese medicine, such a diet is not recommended because it can lead to deficencies. Animal products are both recommended to eat and in herbal formulas. His dietary suggestions are a bit extreme as well, like don't give kids nut butters. What is life without nut butters? A kids gotta live! If it wasn't for some of the condiments Pitchford says to avoid, my kid would never eat. But my kid wouldn't touch an obvious vegtable if he was starving all day.

Buy this book if you want to know about whole foods, but be aware of this bias. And if you need treatment, go to a practitioner, certainly before you follow any of Pitchford's recommendations. I did go to a practitioner and knew what my issues were (all deficient, as post-pardom mothers usually are) and did a gall bladder cleanse from this book with amazing results (as horrible as it is to drink a cup of lemon juice and olive oil). There is certainly alot of good information here, but I completetly disagree with the need for a vegan diet, especially concerning children. Pitchford himself says it isn't really possible to get B12 adequately from this kind of diet, so how can it be the most natural diet for humans?

Summary: A Virtual Bible
Review: I owned the first edition of this book for many years until a student "borrowed" it and never returned it. That's the problem with a valuable reference book such as Healing with Whole Foods. Six years ago I was in search of a greens product. Thinking that all greens products were similar, I perused Paul Pitchford's book with the notion that chlorophyll is chlorophyll. Wrong! Twenty-seven pages later, I learned that too much bitter flavor on a cold and deficient person could produce negative effects. Pitchford delineates general guidelines for determining the best greens products for one's own constitution, be it "excessive," "deficient," "cold," "heat," or "dampness." Pitchford has done the research from which I benefit on a daily basis. I could not be without this virtual Bible.
