Rating: Summary: The Untouchables Shall Be Touched By This Book Review: My sixth grade teacher recommended this book for me, so I decieded to read it. I'm so glad I did. Johnny was so brave-he never complained out loud, and tried to make the best of the situation. The writing is very good and pure-a father writing about his son who is not famous, but is still a hero in many ways. While all through the book you can tell what is coming, when it actually happens, you are still shocked and very moved. You can't read this without spilling over.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful, heart-wrenching tragedy Review: These memoirs telling of the slow, agonizing death of Johnny Gunther could have focused on the morbid, the depressing, and the inuustice -- but they haven't. These memoirs are a beautiful tribute to a life cut all too short. They are written in grief, in sorrow, and in anguish -- yet they are written to offer help and hope. Johnny is described as one who helped a great many people; his father, in writing this book, has helped a great many more. This book is stunning, and recommended for all ages.
Rating: Summary: One who performs bravery and courage in the eyes of all Review: Johnny proved to be an outstanding human being. He lived every day of his life hoping it would not be his last, and yet fought against death so courageously. Even though he knew that his brain tumor would be fatal, he still lived on with humor and happiness. Although, I did find this book a bit slow moving, it has been an inspiration. He proved to be a very intelligent young man despite the fate of his life.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful piece of literature! Review: This book was incredible. I am thirteen years old and I have never read a better book. It was great how Johnny touched lives. He was all but a child and he had great insight into things unimaginable. This book made me smile and at the end it even made me cry. As most parents know it is tough to get through to a teenager like that. I think that everyone who has a chance to read this book to do so. It was fantastic way to tell people of this remarkable child. This is a MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: Very touching and educational Review: I am a student in Lyman Hall High School who had to read this book as a project for my honors English class. If I gained a bit of knowledge this one quote would describe it all, Death "Only the final scene in a single act of a play that goes on forever." Johnny, the main character, I think will live on in those who pick up this book. One of my life goals was to learn about tumors and how they affect people. The quote used above came from Frances, Johnny's mother. I guess connecting to this story was easy for me. I have watched T.V. specials as well as medical diaries but out of all the research I have done who would have thought that t would be sitting in my ninth grade reading class learning what life really is? I learned so much from a realistic story, information that I thought would never be obtained in my life time.
Rating: Summary: A story of love, adventures, and death, throughout one family. Review: The father who is so desperate for answers, and a mother so nieve towards the situation, both have an extream love for there son, Johnny. As Johnny fights for his life, throughout a terrible brain tummor, he looses much of his incredible abilities, and memories. This book not only tells a great story, but brings you to understand illness, that one day could happen to you.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful heart-touching book!! Review: This book really transformed me because it had a new way of seeing life. A 17 year old boy dies of a brain tumor, and his father, John Gunther describes his beloved child through the wonderful but strugling life. I recommend this book, not only to adults- and specially those who lost a child- but to teenagers as well because it teaches us to absorb every second that life has to offer. This book helps you understand things in a better way.
Rating: Summary: Death Be Not Proud is a moving, inspirational book! Review: This book tells Johnny's story. It describes his courage as he battles a malignant brain tumor for over a year, and it tells how each of his family members cope with all that his treatments and suffering entail. Written on an eighth grade reading level, the book can be easily understood by most preteens and adults. I highly recommend this book to anyone who knows or has known a friend or loved one who has struggled with cancer. The main theme along with Johnny's bravery makes this book a must-have!

Rating: Summary: An intelligent boy who develops a brain tumor. Review: This is a true story about a yound boy with a promising future who develops a brain tumor. The author is the father of Johnny Gunther Jr. His mother, Francis, also imputs quotes and diary entries. Returning from Deerfield one Christmas, Johnny was very tired and had a stiff neck, which didn't bother him. He went for his annual physical to discover he had a brain tumor. They performed a first operation, but only removed half of the tumor. One day his father sees an ad about a mustard gas that is supposed to kill cells that have abnormally fast growth. After trying the mustard which was helping, keeping his blood count low, once again a leak appeared in the bump. Then a docter named Max Gerson came to them with a diet that restricted salts, canned foods, fats, and a little water. This diet helped Johnny and all of a sudden his tumor dissapeared. He went home for a few months but shortly came back, because the tumor reappeared. Through all of this Johnny was taking exams and tests for school to keep up. He wrote letters to Dr. Einstein, and got replies back. He finished his exams and was ready for Harvard. He was always liked among anyone who worked with him, because of his open-mind, friendliness and modesty. But the tumor was unstoppable and Johnny peacefully died asleep. These are only some of the many miracles in Johnny's life that helped him survive for the time he did. He always appreciated life, and never took it for granted. This is a challenging book to read, hard to follow, and very sad.
