Summary: A really long book report.....
Review: I'm afraid that I just didn't enjoy this book at all... found it too filled with facts that did not interest me, or add to the storyline. Perhaps knowing the fate of the fishing boat and crew did not help. In many ways it was more like reading a book report about an event in history. If you are interested in the lifestyles of fisherman, and the job... maybe you'll find it more interesting than I did. Otherwise, the writing was very good and informative... but not very entertaining.

Summary: Perfect Storm
Review: The book was very interesting as a story goes. The wrighter did a lot of research and kept you interested the entire time.

Although it was based on a true story, that is as far as it goes. I personaly knew most of the crew on that boat and knew about the rest of them and nothing much in the story has much to with any of them. True, nobody really knows what happened that day but it would have been a lot better if the author had used the facts that he got from the family and friends of the crewmembers on the boat. I would have to say the story was BASED on a true story rather than a true story.

Summary: The Perferct Storm eclipses its self-named movie!
Review: I had already seen the cinematic version of this book before reading it the other day, but decided to read it any way. Several folks I know had read it and enjoyed the book, so I was curious.
I'm glad I picked it up and read it. The books back story and additional information blew away what was covered in the movie. Many non-fiction books can be page-yawners, but this was a true page burner. Junger does a great job weaving the dialogue, facts, weather reports, and bits of history in the gripping work to make this so interesting.
The descriptions of Gloucester, it's haunts and people were intriguing. The fisherman's lifestyle of the rich and famous (for a week, anyway ) activities as decribed sounded harsh... but I empathized with their plight and silently applauded their lust for life.
Junger's words created a picture of the fiery sailors, ferocious mako, fighting swordfish, and frenetic actions on board a fishing vessel. It made me appreciate what these sailors deal with twenty hours a day for weeks at a time.
If some of you out there are still hesitant about reading this because you saw the movie... even if you saw it on the big screen... don't be... you need to get this book and devour it.

Summary: Engrossing
Review: This is a great book...human drama meets bad weather! The details are fascinating and the mystery of the Andrea Gail (which we all know sunk) is nevertheless intersting.

Summary: hated it!!!
Review: one of the WORST books i've ever read in my life. i didn't want to read about history of swordfish or rescue man in Boston in 1800s or whatever those ... were. i was really disappointed about this book. it's nothing like the movie one. i wanted to give 2 or 3 stars cuz it has some reputation, but i just couldn't. so bad...

Summary: Tearjerker
Review: It's not very often that I cry while reading a book but this was a rare exception for me. The book was fantastic reading and was jam packed with a lot more detail than the movie of the same name. So, if you thought the movie was good, then you absolutely must read this book. You're be happy you did too because the book is more involved in the people's lives. After reading this book, I was compelled to visit the fisherman's statue in Gloucester, MASS which was placed next to the sea in memory of all the fisherman who have passed away while fishing over many years. Knowing this book is also a true account of a freak storm which took the lives of these men, also makes it such compelling reading. I fully recommend this book.

Summary: front row seats to catastrophe countdown...
Review: In this enlightening and engrossing book that chronicles the life of a huge, freak storm that leads to disaster at sea, the author gives us a front-row seat to the events and circumstances that lead, inexorably, to the disasterous finale.

As events unfold, we come to understand and admire these men, everyday working people who regularly put their lives on the line for their paycheck. We gain an appreciation for the dangers they face at sea, we see firsthand both the beauty and the brutality of the ocean. And much more so in the book than in the movie, we see what kind of economic factors and pressures, as well as what kind of personality factors, drive these men to put themselves at risk, so that what at first appears to be reckless abandon ends up looking much more like economic necessity coupled with an absolutely unpredictable twist of nature.

Also included in the unfolding drama are some amazing stories of survival, rescue, and heroism. And you really get a feeling for the awesome power this incredible threefold-storm generated!

While some have criticized the movie for being "pure fiction", the book is a different story. True, no one made it back to tell all, but there was radio contact up until the very end. And what the author does, in areas where all the facts are not known, is research other very similar situations at sea, to show what happens when a boat is in such-and-such a situation; what does the captain do, what do the crew do, what do sailors think and feel under those circumstances. Because no one made it back to tell, the author wanted to put absolutely as much information as COULD be known down as a record of this incredible event. The movie takes liberties that the book does not.

The book comes across as a fitting tribute to the men who died on the Adrea Gail, and the countless others who have died at sea, and who never returned to have their story told. I hope we hear more from Sebastian Junger in the future!

Summary: Exciting and fast paced
Review: I've heard the movie version of this book was disappointing, but the book was great! The author did a wonderfully satisfying job of conjecture on those elements of the experience that no one will ever know. Interesting and accurate in descriptions of sailing details, an enjoyment for both the expert and the novice. Fast read, suspenseful, people well-described. Tons of fun (as much as a portrayal of tragedy can be)! The kind of book you'll read all in one sitting.

Summary: Fantastic!!
Review: One of the best books I have read. I hurried to read the book before I went to see THE PERFECT STORM last summer in the theatres. Much to my surprise, the book was 10 times better than the movie (isn't that how it usually is?)and went into much more detail (and many more stories) than the movie did. Junger has a gift for making the words dance across the page, and making the usually boring explanation of the fishing/whaling/boating industry interesting. Be warned though, it has a slow start (thus the reason for 4, not 5 stars) but picks up soon after. Also of note...if you think that the book is anything like the movie, you're in for a big surprise.

Review: Impressive authenticity. Wish there were more like it.
