Rating: Summary: Luck Of The Toss is a great summer read! Review: Luck Of The Toss is the second novel out by newcomer Barbara O'Neill. Her talent is bursting in this tale of fame and fortune, love and laughter, and a couple that compliment each other so well, it put this reader in mind of Newman and Woodward. Anastasia Cameron is a romance writer, relaxing on the Cape, and is working on her second novel, Fantasy, when she is accosted by a Frisbee, and a dog that wants his toy back! Enter Jacob Thomas, the keeper of the beast, with a throw arm that not even the worst ball club would employ! No worries though, he's got a day job as one of the hottest, most sought after actors on both T.V. and the big screen! Jake introduces himself, and Stasi is at once mortified that she has a fast swelling nose (not her best look), and is star struck that this handsome man of her own fanciful musings has materialized in front of her on that lonely stretch of beach. She soon learns however, that reality is as good as...even better than anything she could ever conjure up in her mind. Jake is charming, attentive, amusing, and fun to be with. As their relationship becomes more intimate, Stasi is treated to Jake's own brand of loving that, could it be bottled, would make millions! Although Stasi is Jake's senior by six years, and a widow, she worries that these will be a problem, Jake convinces her that this is their time to find happiness, and that age makes no difference to him; he is simply in love with her. They marry, and soon learn they are going to be parents. Meanwhile, Jake's long running television show is canceled, but he is pleased that he will be able to pursue other projects. He feels pigeon holed, however, since the scripts coming his way are mirror images of the role he played on his show. So, he takes another tact, and tries his hand at screenwriting, which has been a secret dream of his. Stasi's sells the rights of her first book to Tinseltown, and her writing career begins to skyrocket. It's bittersweet though, since Jake's attempt to reinvent himself is met with challenge after challenge, and Jake being his own worst critic! Patience, love, and Stasi's unwavering faith in her man may be all that can save Jake from himself, and his confidence that is badly shaken. His pride is her toughest rival, but she is a woman of persistence whose store of support, and care for her man could be the lifeline that Jake can cling in his sea of uncertainty. The story is told in the first person, from Stasi's point of view, and pulls the reader in from the very first with her story of their journey on the road to happiness. Love scenes are sizzling and will have you reaching for a long, cool drink! Readers will chuckle at Stasi's sarcasm, quick wit, and come back lines. Her ability to face head on, every barrier placed in her way will have you cheering for her to the very last page. Ms. O'Neill has succeeded in turning out another stellar work. Her characters are genuine and irresistible. When the story opens, Jake is a heartthrob, and this reader placed him on a pedestal because of his fame. But as the story progresses, his sincerity, affection, and devotion to Stasi and the family he loves made him a regular person, with the same ups and downs people from all walks of life encounter every day. Kudos to you, Ms.O'Neill. Luck Of The Toss is a keeper!
