Rating: Summary: A tale of pirates, adventure, faith, and love. Review: Graham's "Captainess" (set in the 1720's) is the story of a young woman who suddenly discovers that the life she once knew was all a lie. Heartbroken at a series of events that takes the life of her father, James MacGregor (mistakenly given a boy's name by her mother who died shortly after her birth) sets sail on various ships disguised as a crewman just to survive. But when Captain William Steed takes over the a privateering ship that James is working on, everything changes. He only has to look at her once and realizes she is a woman. Steed is a Godfearing man, a widower. He hasn't the heart to abandon her on dry land, and so gives her a job with his cooking crew--a kind man and his pleasant wife. Soon however, Steed's feelings for Miss MacGregor(Captainess) begin to grow. When her feelings begin to mirror his own, things become complicated. And when a mysterious pirate from Captainess' past shows up in the Caribbean waters, she is forced to face one of her greatest fears. Will she forgive the pirate with the bloody reputation and allow God to heal her heart? Will she and Captain Steed find lasting love grounded in a faith in Jesus Christ? This is a short novel, but an easy and exciting read. If you're looking for something entertaining and uplifting with a inspirational message, "Captainess" will certainly fit the bill.
