Rating: Summary: Shlock Review: As an avid romance reader, I've read my share of great books, OK books, and a lot of poor ones that still have a few redeeming shreds of quality. This over long, predictable and horrible book doesn't have one thing I can recommend about it.
Rating: Summary: Read the reviews! Review: Did I ever make a mistake not reading the amazon reviews for this mess of a novel before buying it. Acutally, I ran across it in a garage sale. This was a book they should have thrown in the trash, where it belongs, instead of trying to sell it. Most of the reviews here get it pretty right: this is a horribly written, predictable, offensive and completely tasteless book. Very, very bad!!!!!
Rating: Summary: I've been waiting for a book like this! Review: I bought and read this book because it was so highly recommended by a friend. My thoughts in one word--'Wow" insightful, brilliantly written, this is one of those books that you read and it makes you a better person. Now when I see a title by P. Elizabeth Collins, I'm buying it, she can make words sing. A+ for Wild Gardenias.
Rating: Summary: Impossible to finish Review: I don't remember the last time I bought a book and actually didn't finish it. No matter how bad it is, I at least want my money's worth. This was impossible with Wild Gardenias. This "book" is something that should be used to teach aspiring writers how NOT to write romance novels. This reads like the vanity publication of someone with too much time on their hands, too much money to spend and not an ounce of writing talent. I wish I could get a refund for books that are just horrible by any conceivable standard.
Rating: Summary: So bad it's almost fun...almost Review: I friend of mine gave me this book after thinking about submitting a manuscript to this publishing company. This book, apparently written by the company president, made up her mind not to. I agree completely. This story is so ridiculously, completely unrealistic as to make you wonder if it was written this badly on purpose. Not one moment of it's standard, superficial plot is ever believable. I mean, OK romances between people who come from different worlds are in a million romance novels and soap operas, but the way this book's leading man, TEd, just falls instantly and totally in love with a prostitute from one of the Phillipines' nastiest houses is completely ridiculous and unreaslistic. And this guy is supposed to be from one of America's richest families and engaged to a top Hollywood movie actress. Sure, she's revealed to be a complete tramp, but our hero Ted, IS COMPLETELY UNAWARE IT!!!!! So why does he run to the arms of hooker so quickly? The trampy movie actress is also just that: a complete and unredeemable tramp with no dimensions to her personality, no reality at all. Of course, hero Ted is such a perfect, sweet, trusting sould that he never recognizes what an evil, deceitful girl he's about to marry. Maybe if he did, his turning to China, the prostitute, would have made more sense. This is a book where all the characters are totally one dimensional, evil villains or perfect saints. It's almost like watching a really, really cheezy old monster movie or an Ed Wood movie where you want to sit in front of the TV and make fun of it. If you like doing that sort of thing with a book, go ahead and buy Wild Gardenias and have a great time. Just about every time you think the story couldn't sink any lower in its stupidity, it amazes you by getting worse.
Rating: Summary: Dittos... Review: I have finished reading the book and I must say I am impressed with the authors imagination to take us to a place where I believe she had never been before. It saddens me how she could write about a Filipina and completely knows nothing about Filipinas in general. Many of her characters has been fictionalized to the point that as a Filipina I would be embarrased to tell my friends about her book. The Filipina in this story has been degraded and I hope the author will no longer write about the Philippines and its people, unless that author has studied the Philippine culture and heritage in depth. To all Filipina readers out there, don't even try to read this book it would only insult you!
Rating: Summary: Is this for real? Review: I was recommended this book and told it was good historical fiction. I should have known better from the cheesy, ridiculous description of the plot. This book could almost be a very funny parody of romance novels...but it's not. Every idiotic, unrealistic plot twist and every unbelievable character is written with complete seriousness by its talentless writer. For those looking for historical fiction, stay far, FAR away from this terrible piece of junk.
Rating: Summary: Horrible!!!! Review: One of the worst books I've ever read. Worst romance, worst historical, just all around terrible, horrible grabage. Avoid anything by this writer!!
Rating: Summary: A cheap rip-off Review: The author of this book must have read a page here and there in Dominick Dunne's "An Inconvenient Woman" and thought she could write a cheapened, dumbed down romance novel rip off. She failed, very, VERY badly. Do yourself a favor, read Dunne's book and don't waste your money on this dross.
Rating: Summary: Very important... Review: Yes, I agree with the reviewer who said we should check the amazon reviews before buying a book. I bought this unreadable piece of trash and threw it away less than half way through. Let's hope P. Elizabeth Collins never writes another book again!
