Summary: Faith, romance and mystery
Review: In her third book, Alberta author Carolyne Aarsen's central character is searching for the answers to two questions: what really happened to her father, and when will she find love? The answers to these questions are intrinsically linked to her faith, which stands out in her everyday doings as well as the high- and low-points in her life. The book is well-written and a fun read, as well as being a welcome and "tame" alternative to some of the secular romances that pepper the literary scene. It accomoplishes all of this while avoiding didacticism or pious morality. One of the best aspects of the book is how Alberta small town life is shown realistically and appealingly; the characters' most mundane activities are painted with an expert's sensitivity and knowledge. Whether the character, a journalist, is covering a harvest scene or dealing with an over-inquisitive grandmother, the actions are true to life. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and Carolyne Aarsen's other two books and I look forward to others.
