Rating: Summary: A GOOD STORY, BUT NOT WORTH THE COST Review: I have never had such a hard time trying to figure out if I liked a book in my life! "When Winter Comes" had an interesting plot which kept me turning the pages until the book was completed. I spent 2 weeks debating whether to spend $$ on a romantic-suspense PAPERBACK, and I've spent another week trying to decide if I liked it. Three sisters raised by their rich, affluent, domineering, and deviant father. He emotionally and sexually abused his daughters from the time they were able to walk. And, being as rich and affluent as he was, the children were totally at his mercy. The story opens with the middle sister, Cassidy, returning home after a 20-year absence to investigate the disappearance of the older sister. Naturally, her return to her childhood home, and her father, bring back bad memories and flashbacks of her horrific past. The problem is, I could not feel any of the heroine's emotions. If done correctly, this could have been a 4 hanky read. Instead, the heroine's remembrances and "mental anguish" felt like ... well, just a recitation of the facts. I could not FEEL her pain. Secondly, there wasn't one "upbeat" moment in the book. Not one. Yes, the storyline was based on a dark subject, but still there wasn't one moment of levity, one admired sunrise, one "giddy after sex," or "I've finally reclaimed my true love after 20 years, and, darn, I'm happy!" moment. So, to sum up my opinion, "When Winter Comes" was a good book, but definitely not worth the price. Buy it used or get it from the library. It's not up to par with Ms. Bird's "With Every Breath."
