Rating: Summary: I enjoyed reading, The Itch. Benilde has improved. Review: The Itch was better written than Good Hair which shows that Benilde is improving as a writer. The book briefly touched upon interracial relations (i.e. Abra's and Griffin's brief relationship)and gives a glimpse into upper African-American society. Abra's character could have been developed more as well as Cullen. I think Benilde focused too much on Natasha and Miles. However, I did respect Cynthia and Miles for being honest enough to see that they wanted out of their relationships. Cullen got exactly what he deserved "DUMPED". The reader could easily see where the climax was heading.
Rating: Summary: Boring....Nothing like Good Hair Review: I was excited about the release of The Itch but was in for a rude awakening. It was boring, it jumped around too much and the only reasoned I finished it was because I started it. If you are going to include several characters, Little needs to try and model McMillan's style in "Waiting to Exhale". Moreover, Natasha's character was fake and boring, and Abra was a jerk with a so-called "new sense of identity." I could have started at the last few chapters and got the idea of the entire story then. I hope Little doesn't continue to write about women who are weak and powerless. There's certainly nothing wrong with supporting a good man but clearly the women in "Good Hair" and "The Itch" don't know what the real definition of "stand by your man" is!!!! After reading this book, I vowed not to read anymore of these types of books. I'm going back to the intellectual reading that means something, good literature, and poetry like Cornel West, J. California Cooper and Nikki Giovanni.
Rating: Summary: A really silly, trifling, badly written, empty book Review: Benilde Little can write. Not very well. Just enough to be considered literate. Brand names alone do not a character make. And the plot of a novel should be more complex than that of a sitcom on the WB Network. This is the worst book that I've read in quite a while. I only finished it because I found myself admiring Ms. Little for her bravery. It must have taken a lot of guts to publish this novel under her own name.
Rating: Summary: Boring! Skipped around too much! Review: Natasha was totally boring! Abra was more intersting, but she got boring also! The book should have left out Natasha! You saw where the book was going! You could read to the middle, and skip to the end! And not miss anything really!
Rating: Summary: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! Review: Initially, I was somewhat reluctant to read The Itch. I'd read Good Hair not long ago and was less than impressed. The Itch took me by surprise-- I couldn't put this one down! I'm anxiously awaiting The Itch Part 2. I have to know what happened to Natasha and Miles!
Rating: Summary: Not bad, but you may want to wait for the paperback Review: The Itch was better written than Good Hair, and the characters were a little more rounded (e.g. more positive male & female images). The interaction between the couples was also very interesting. Little work has improved and I will continue to support her work.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT!! Review: After reading Good Hair, I was encouraged that there was a writer that could effectively write about the real Buppie Population. I just finished The Itch and am sold on Benilde Little as an author. I am passing both books along to some people I wish would open up to the world that I grew up in.
Rating: Summary: One of The Worst Novels I Have Ever Read Review: Weak plot, weak characters, and horrible prose. Are we so hard up as a people that we would consider this kind of garbarge fiction? I urge anyone with any sense to avoid this "novel" at all costs. Ugh!
Rating: Summary: I did not feel The Itch Review: Somehow I don't think that I'm the only person out there that is not feeling The Itch. Having read and enjoyed Good Hair I was in the mood for another offering from Benilde Little. However, The Itch wasn't what I had in mind.I grew tired of the whole Miles storyline, I didn't see how Abra was pathetic on one page and then all of a sudden made all these miraculous changes, I thought that Natasha's sista-girl character wasn't true throughout the story and that she wimped out in the end, I wanted Sherry to cut up like she did in Good Hair, and that model chick simply needed a swift kick in the behind--along with Abra's sorry-excuse-for-a-man husband. I don't know, I guess the book just didn't develop in the direction I thought it was going to, and I was disappointed by that fact. I think that when Benilde set out to write this book she had a good idea on her hands but by the second half of the book the story just seemed rushed and disjointed. All this said, I'm still a Benilde fan and can't wait to read her next book, but I just had to speak my mind on this one.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down, it was excellent ! Review: Benilde Little has outdone herself. Good Hair was good and The Itch is even better. The book was funny and heartwarming. The two characters were expressed so great that you really felt you knew everything about them. She has done a wonderful job with this book and she will always get my $ when she publishes a new book.
