Summary: if you like pirate stories, try something else, PLEASE!
Review: Adrian Wolfe is a feared pirate who holds no love for either the Americans or the British. As he arrives in New Orleans, he spots a young woman running away from a group of ruffians and promptly saves her. He is instantly besotted with this beautiful, impetuous girl who wears boots instead of satin slippers and demands a kiss in payment for rescuing her. When they meet again, outside her home, the results are slightly different.

Carly Kelsey is determined to find her father, Captain Richard Kelsey. After hunting unsuccessfully for him, she determines that her only course of action is to go to the lair of pirate Jean Lafitte (the real historical figure who aided future president Andrew Jackson in defending New Orleans against the British) and find out if he's holding her father hostage. Meanwhile, she has met a man who is miles away from everything she knows, certainly miles away from the pompous, arrogant Roland Crawford, whom her aunt and uncle want her to marry.

Carly and Adrian's attraction grows after they are thrown together due to another reckless move by Carly, one which nearly gets her drowned. Considering that Carly is due to return home and marry Roland, she gives no thought to the possibility of pregnancy or to her reputation were it known she has been traveling with such a disreputable man.

There are plenty of other problems as well. The secondary characters add nothing but stereotypes and dialects that typify their ethnicities, but add no richness to the story. The villain was also a disappointment, and there was never a mystery about his real identity - even with the twist that was thrown in.

Did I look forward to reading this book? Yes! I so wanted to read a good pirate romance, so that I could recommend it to people who usually snub this particular type of book. Unfortunately, The Last Pirate is one of the best reasons ever to avoid the pirate romance.

Summary: A Feisty Taste of History
Review: Marti Phillip's "The Last Pirate" is a must read for all who love a taste of history created by the story of colorful,"real" characters. Ms. Phillip's has done her research. This tale of the era surrounding the War of 1812 when Louisiana was aided and abeted by pirates of the best (and worst)kind puts you right there in time and place. The author has painted a feisty heroine in Carly and--ah, that notorious Captain Wolfe--whew--that we all might have a man like him in our life. As a former resident of the area this story is about and one who loves history, I find that Ms. Phillip's gives the reader a perfect picture of the Creole society and happenings (though fictional in most part) are very believable. All in all, a wonderful read by someone who had given up on historical fiction. I will certainly follow this author through her next romp in history.

Summary: HISTORICAL ROMANCE SET IN THE EARLY AMERICAN DEEP SOUTH
Review: NEW ORLEANS: An indolent town is sudenly swept under the threat of war and invasion. The Year is 1814 and the Gulf of Mexico is a treacherous place with pirates pludering the seas and the enemy British holding fast to a blockade. Her quest to find her missing father, a sea captain, propels Carly desperately to the wharf in New Orleans on a dark night. She is rescued from ruffians by the notorious pirate Adrain Wolfe, an ally of Jean Lafitte. His efforts aren't chivalrous, he's out to save his own skin. When danger passes he refuses her offer of a reward in gold coins, and takes his own reward instead... Ms. Phillips launches her tale with two strong willed characters with unbending ambitions. Adrain belongs on the sea, Carly belongs in tapestried rooms with fine gowned ladies. But their meeting takes them through violent dark storms at sea as well as waltzing across polished wood floors, to peril on the cold, wet battlefields of history. With a dose of espionage, murder and some historical characters thrown in, Ms. Phillips gives the reader a entertaining taste of Old New Orleans in the last days of the pirates and the War of 1812.

Summary: AT LAST, a pirate historical for the thinking reader
Review: Thank Goodness, this is not one of those contrived tales that make me want to hurl the book at the wall because the hero and heroine are so stupid. I'm talking about the typical "pirate takes innocent heroine captive who is fated to be seduced"... No, this one is entertaining but more realistic. The historical content has obviously been well-researched; the feel of the period and the notable people captured in this story is to the author's credit. The heroine is spirited and the hero dark, stubborn and brooding enough to entertain those who like a good romance. The pirate becomes her reluctant captain for hire in the quest to find her missing father as war threatens all they hold dear. Will her high society family ever accept him as the man she wants, or will the elite of New Orleans try to destroy him? The story of their struggle against the odds is poignant, has just enough humor and keeps the pages turning. How Jean Lafitte's outlawed pirates of Barataria helped Jackson save New Orleans from the British assault is intriguing. I wish the book had been longer.
