Rating: Summary: Unbelievable...I couldn't put the thing down. Review: I began to read this book on a Wednesday afternoon after watching more daytime TV than I could handle (I was up-to-date on all the goings-ons of the Bold and the Beautiful and Days of Our Lives) in between Extra-Strength Tylenol and feeling sorry for myself. I had gotten my impacted wisdom teeth removed the day before and looked like a chipmunk. Uncomfortable as I was, I kept reading and reading, at first very cynical (I don't usually enjoy books picked by my mum) but enjoying it more and more. By the end of it, someone would say something and I would make reference to a quote or moment in this book. Every detail, every part of The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing is memorable, profound and thought-provoking. I couldn't help but empathize and want to hear more, like this were me and my best friend settling down for a gossip session on a Friday night. Please, do yourself a favour and read this book.
Rating: Summary: A nice read with a disappointing ending Review: I really enjoyed the book and related to the character (the chapters dedicated to the loss of her father were very involving), however, the end totally lost me. The characterization of the two women who had written the "Guide to Finding and Marrying Mr. Right" were downright annoying and uncalled for. Why did Bank choose to include them? It really brought the ending down. I found myself flipping past pages of dialogue with those two just to find out what *happened* to the lead character. Very disappointing.
Rating: Summary: Lighten Up, Pseudo-Intellectualists! Review: Okay, this is not something you're going to be discussing over tea with the great minds of our century. But I was having a terrible week as a single woman in New York City and this really picked me up and made me laugh on the subway. The only part that threw me was the chapter written from the downstairs neighbor's point of view - I thought that came out of nowhere. Still, there are several memorable lines in this book - "he tried to smile but it was only a shape his mouth made" - that took a breath from me. I think it depicts a fine image of women and if you disagree I wonder whose standars you're holding yourself to - this book is real to me.
Rating: Summary: This book will be enjoyed by young girls and women alike. Review: The Girls' Guide To Hunting And Fishing is a book that both young girls and women can enjoy and see themselves in. She describes every girls insecurities and need for love and acceptance - not only by others, but from themself as well - with humor and wit. It is a celebration of femininity.
Rating: Summary: A light, fun read...really enjoyed it. Review: Sometimes you just need a nice consumable book that you can dive into and come back out a few hours later nothing more than entertained. This book did that. I enjoyed the writing style and the wonderful humor; I liked finding myself laughing out loud more than once. I'm passing this book around...
Rating: Summary: Not like Bridget - better! Review: I loved the inclusion of both family and work in this book, as well as other realities of many of our lives. It was fun to be thrown into Jane's story, and to focus on people and their interactions. I was surprised at how drawn to the book I was, once I started it, even though I was bothered by the older man relationship and I would have rather had more of Jane than the 2 "weird" chapters. ( I kept waiting for the characters to come up again.) Easy and fast reading, but not fluff.
Rating: Summary: short, sweet and non-binding. Review: "The Girls' Guide To.....was a cute book. I'll admit it's hard to follow most of it but if you don't like deep reading, it's great. Jane a.k.a. Janie has a bit of growing to do and the characters in the book are doing their best to help her. I think I like Archie the best of all the characters. This book is somewhat along the lines of "Local Girls."
Rating: Summary: skip it! Review: what a dissapointment! I read the amazon blurb and was hooked so I bought the book... the blurb was the best part! I am shocked at all the rave reviews. Am I reading the same book??
Rating: Summary: Who thinks this is well written?? Review: I want the whopping two hours of my life I wasted to read this "book" back. Jane is poorly developed and lacks soul-- not to mention gives women a bad name. I'm sure they'll make a movie of this...it's the kind of child Hollywood eats up.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous summer reading, clever, witty writing Review: Jane brought back memories of my single life.I laughed and cried with her. This book was fast, and enjoyable.
