Rating: Summary: funny girls need love too. Review: read this before bridget jones' diary or tama janowitz's a certain age and definitley before "the rules." actually, don't read the rules. bank is an amazing writer and is funny and sarcastic she is pretty spot on about some things. but the best thing is that she encourages funny girls to be funny and not subdue it just so boys will like them.
Rating: Summary: Well, I don't get it . . . but i kind of like it? Review: Okay, so the character in this book keeps trying not to make a mistake, but she's not learning the lessons that come with making mistakes, by missing out on the pain. That's cool, I can relate to that. However, the author assumes that we can also relate to all characters, and remember even how they relate to one another. it was like, "Billy came in. I knew what he wanted." and you're like "BILLY?WHO THE H--- is BILLY? What DOES he want? Is he the same guy as WILLY or is that in the last story? I'm so confused. . . " But she's a good writer, esp. for her first time (WOW) and the book made me laugh, so I can't take away all the stars*.
Rating: Summary: What an odd, disjointed little book. Review: I chose the title since I'd remembered its publicized debut. Now, I'm wondering why a first-time author reaped so much acclaim, and why I'm not endeavoring to join the club. The novel is really a collection of short stories; one unrelated chapter comes in out of left field. The protagonist rattles off caustic one-liners, behaves stupidly and exhibits minimal emotional growth. I could not sympathize or empathize one whit.
Rating: Summary: She shouldn't have quit her day job Review: What WAS this book? It started fairly well, moving at a chatty pace then Boom! some totally out-of-it chapter that I read twice because I thought I was missing something. Then along comes another strange chapter - was it Jane that had cancer or what? This was a poorly written book by a first time author trying to do something 'unique'. In unskilled hands, it came off just irritating. I read in People that she quit her job to write full time. Well .. my title says it all. I have to stop buying books based on hype and cute dust covers.
Rating: Summary: Worth While... but, not stellar. Review: This book had a lot of really great parts and I generally liked it, but I also agree that it was a bit confusing. Sometimes, it took a minute or two to get the chapters straight and what's going on in them. You'll need more than a day to get threw this book. You might even need to go back and re-read stuff. I wouldn't rave about this book and tell all my friends to read it, but.....it was worth the read in the end.
Rating: Summary: Only the last chapter is worth it.... Review: For all you "Rules Girls" out there, the last chapter is a scream. Gives a good realistic look at the results you get when you follow the rules and why you might want to think twice. I had a good laugh. However, the last chapter was the books only saving grace. I would have a difficult time recommending this to someone.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious and almost universal Review: I finished this book in one day. I found the short stories compelling and could personally relate in many instances. Banks displays great skill in her ability to tie together seemingly disjointed themes. Her approach to love, loss, and maturity approached profundity while the sly intelligence of the characters kept the plot down-to-earth and funny. Great job. Can't wait to see what she does next.
Rating: Summary: Yawn fest Review: Poor old Jane couldnt too excited about everything that was going on around her so there was no way I was going to! The 'precious' little stories that appeared from nowhere at different parts of the book stifled the narrative and distracted from the story of Jane's romantic entanglements. Simply put-not satisfying or engaging at any point. See Marian Keyes if you want to read something of this ilk that doesnt leave you cold. I found myself not the slightest bit concerned how any of the characters lives panned out and then wanted to 'barf' when Mr Too Good to be True strode in through all that predictable doom and gloom!
Rating: Summary: A sad excuse for a novel Review: I purchased this book because the description on the jacket cover was well-written and seemed to point to insightful ideas. As I was reading the book, I had to re-read the jacket cover a few times to make sure I was reading the same book. It lacked character development, depth in story line and the writing was geared towards 13-year-olds. This is probably the worst book I've ever read and I will never read any of Melissa Bank's other works.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderfully Captivating New Age Novel Review: As Melissa Bank takes you on the journey through the life of Jane Rosnel, you almost begin to wonder if it's written about you. Being a young woman of this age, I could relate to the book in the most captivating way. It made me cry and laugh and frown all in the same page. I would recomend this book to any young woman out there today. "The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing", is the best novel I've read since Salingers "The Catcher in the Rye", which is an outstanding accomplishment on Melissa Banks' part. Buy the book, it's remarkable. I guarantee you'll be impressed by Melissa Bank's writing and overall charisma.
