Summary: i guess i missed the joke
Review: i read this book after it was billed as the next 'bridget jones diary'. one difference, bridget was FUNNY and made sense, unlike this novel. the book read more like a bunch of short stories that did not belong together. don't waste your time.

Summary: A Motivating Read
Review: This book inspired me, a 16-year-old girl, to reach for my dreams so I wouldn't end up like the tragic heroine in this novel. Well, maybe being a 35-year-old, single woman who dates a lame old alcoholic man and takes a lot of abuse from her boss (sort of Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl-ish) isn't living a tragic life, but more of a stereotypical one. And the ending is a total sham, you can see it coming from page two. But if you're looking for a light read or want to say to yourself, "At least I'm not this pathetic!", I suggest ordering up this book and reading it all in one afternoon!

Summary: short stories for life
Review: This is a fantastic selection of short stories. Banks is brillant. She captures Jane in different areas in her life. Who hasn't felt jealous or envious of a brother's girlfriend or a guy friend's new date. She is witty, challanging and optimist in these tales.

Summary: What about the two mystery chapters?
Review: I believe that I may have missed something somewhere, but did anyone else think there were two chapters that didn't fit into the story at all? I wasn't even entertained by these chapters, I was confused. And then I waited throughout the whole book to see where they fit in. I read quite a bit and have never see this tactic before. Other than that blatant literary mistake, I found the book loosely entertaining. If you have nothing else to read it may be worth your time.

Summary: Sorry--I'm not getting it
Review: Just read this after several friends raved. Oh boy--yet another whiny thirtysomething looking for love. What an ORIGINAL concept . . .

Summary: Disappointing book club choice
Review: Our book club read "Girls' Guide" and was generally disappointed. The book starts out pleasantly, but I never connected with the heroine. When she played by "The Rules" I just got disgusted with her. If you're looking for a good story about a woman, try "Where the Heart Is."

Summary: Uplifting Story!
Review: I absolutely loved this book. I really felt a part of Jane's life. This book made me laugh out loud and shed a few tears. I have since lent my book to a few friends and they feel the same. Share this book! I can't wait until Melissa writes us another.

Summary: It just left me feeling... empty.
Review: I was totally psyched to read this book. I had heard so many wonderful things about it. The trouble is, reading it was as boring as peeling potatoes. Nothing happened. Jane is not sexy, savvy or smart. She's not a single NYC gal on the prowl. She's frumpy, boring, and indecisive.

This book left me empty. Not because it had a profound effect on my psychological state. I only wish it had! It was just a bore.

I detested Bridget Jones' Diary- but would highly recommend it in comparison to this disjointed, confusing and flat book. I gave it to a friend and asked them to read it to see if it really stunk as much as I perceived it did.

I do not understand the high volume of 5 stars in these reviews! If you want a good book, read a classic like the Great Gatsby. The girls Guide is not, in any way shape or form, a GREAT book.

It's a whole lot of hype. Visit your library- but don't spend the $$!

Summary: Quirky and Quick
Review: This was a fun little fast read. It started off well. I enjoyed the characters right away. The two random chapters were a little bothersome. They were good little short stories in themselves. I wanted to find out more about those people and to hear their stories. It made the book feel a little disjointed. All in all, it was a quirky book that I finished very quickly. I would recommend it, as long as you aren't expecting anything earth shattering.

Summary: It's just a fun read...
Review: I get such a kick out of all these <ahem> "serious readers" that are so put out by this book. Perhaps reading the jacket didn't give you a clue as to what the content might be? If you bought this thinking it was literature then you really are clueless and I'm afraid there may be little hope for you. This book is silly and yes sometimes it's even stupid...but it's mostly just fun. It's not prose - just something light and quick (AKA "a beach read"). I'm satisfied that I got what I paid for - a couple of hours of light entertainment. Not to like it because you felt it failed as literary fiction is, in itself, ridiculous. Lighten up already!
