Rating: Summary: An enigmatic compliation of feeling... Review: "ATTILA: A Barbarian's Love Story" is one of the most unique pieces of literature I've ever read. Being one of the only books based on culture and nationality, intertwined with personal experiences, "ATTILA: A Barbarian's Love Story" helps the reader decipher who and where the author is in the various stages of his life.Using an abundance of clever language combined with the seemingly ordinary, Peter Hargitai expresses many emotional experiences as a child, and it demonstrates how it affects him later as an adult. Anyone who reads "ATTILA: A Barbarian's Love Story" will find many things they feel they can relate to, as well as learn from. Overall, I believe Peter Hargitai has touched on some sensitive subjects while not turning it into a confessional narrative, which at times characteristic is of most other biographical fictions. This book is very emotional as well as fulfilling. It made me think and appreciate those small things we take for granted. Bringing significant issues to light such as the Americanization of a traditional culture. This author clearly portrays the life-like issues facing an immigrant adolescent/teenager in America. It shows that dealing with these matters can be frustrating at times, but are acceptable in the end, without having to totally lose yourself in another culture, but be true to your heritage.
Rating: Summary: True to Life Review: I think that this medium is the perfect outlet for all his childhood angst. Many people have expressed a disinterest for the meandering, seemingly unorganized flashbacks - however, they are what seemed to work best for me. It was involved, and ripe with conflict. I also thought that the father was a pathetically hopeful character full of internal conflicts that could have filled an entire novel. It is interesting that the supporting characters (which are essential and intimately intertwined to the plot) also take on - collectively - the role of the allusive antagonist. And this idea that there is no one evil person acting as an opposing force against the leading man is a concept which I not only embrace, but applaud. This is much more difficult to pull off than the simple good versus evil idea that is so often sold through the mainstream media. However, in Attila it works perfectly to have the world against this pathetically misguided youth. This is life. This is the way that life works. I find it all a bit trite, and presumptuous to think that you can take all that is in this world and classify it on a two dimensional line of polars: good and evil. I think that provides more of a struggle in the end: family; duty to cultural heritage and traditions versus the new world of love and risks. Inherently I am prone to be a believer in all that is romantic and hopeless. Therefore, the ending was a wonderful surprise to see that all this mans troubles and future could be wrapped up in this seemingly average girl. It made me happy to see that a man with that many problems could be loved, and in return love such a normal girl. Overall this was refreshing and abnormally uplifting, hopeful book
Rating: Summary: Rage, Rage against the dying light! Review: No matter what, Attila does not give up on what he wants, and that is the love of his life. The story is one to learn from. Not every writer is as honest as this author. If you seek the truth, you will find it with this novel. And a love story to add never hurts. The main character Attila must deal with prejudice and death at a young age. This makes his journey through life more tedious than others. Yet through it all, he maintains sanity, and keeps his light bright. He challenges the norm, and fights for the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with, whether or not no one approves. Motivation is an impact at the outcome of the novel. Carpe diem.

Rating: Summary: A Magnificent story Review: This book is amazing. I have yet to read a book as realistic as this one. The characters, the life situations, and Attila's feelings are so real. I could relate to Attila and his family issues, love issues, and issues with himself. This is a tale of discovery and courage, it outlines a young man's journey in finding himself, and finally severing the ties that bonded him to a family full of turmoil. The story also gives a peek into communism and its affects on the inhabitants of the country. I highly recommend this book, It will keep you on the edge of your seat with every turn of the page.
Rating: Summary: Love and Struggle Review: Personally, I found the book very entertaining and really liked it a lot. It is about a young boy named Attila, who fled from Hungary with his family to be enriched with America's opportunities. There Attila grows up, confront his family, and meets the love of his life. Attila takes you through his experiences as a sexually and generally frustrated teenager and leaves you with eager anticipation. It's also very easy to relate to because it deals with struggles amongst his family members such as prejudice and competition between siblings. It also deals with struggles in his relationship. The Character Development is excellent. Even though him and Millie have a beautiful and loving relationship it does show their hard times too. The book starts off a little slow, but before you know it, you are engaged in the Character's lives and just can't wait to see what is going to happen.
Rating: Summary: A story of a flowering love Review: In general I liked the book. I was able to relate to it in many ways. As I read it I would get enraptured in it and I would not want to put it down. I enjoyed most the scenes with Attila and Millie because they were really descriptive and I was able to relate my situation with theirs. They brought me many memories of my ex-boyfriend and as I read the book it was as if I were living those moments. The story had some humor in it which is always pleasant.
I believe the beginning of the novel is important to the history of the time. I also believe the author wants the reader to understand in a better way what he went through and felt that a way of doing this is through the historical narrative at the beginning of the novel. It gives a good insight on how the author felt when running away from his homeland during a revolution. The conflicts between Attila and Millie reveal the characters personalities and where they stand in what they believe in. The novel includes a little bit of everything, some sadness, happiness, suspense, romance, allowing the reader to go through a rollercoaster of emotions which keeps the reader intrigued in the book.
Rating: Summary: Romantic love story Review: I couldn't put this book down when i picked it up. I am a romantic. Not only was the love between Millie and Attila full of excitement and sorrow, but it is what true love is. Their love is not "happy" all the time. They face hard times that only a love like theirs could keep them together through it. Attila changes his life for Millie. Together thy overcome great odds, such as their different religions, different backgrounds, and overall different families. In this novel, love is the number one thing to live for. When you find it, never let it go. It shows that a young love can survive and can be stronger than anyone could have imgained.
Rating: Summary: beautiful love story Review: Fascinating story of a family who moved from Hungary to the US. Heartwarming personal stories of friendship bonds as well as the tribulations within family relations. And the passion and innocence of young love. Slow start but very exciting end. You finish the book feeling great for the lead characters.
Rating: Summary: Great Story, True characters Review: This was a really good love story with genuine characters, a very real disfunctional family that many of us can relate to. Very good plot and tension.
