Summary: I hereby solemnly swear......
Review: ...to never read another Jane Feather book. I've been frustrated and let down about the few I've read and said once before that I wouldn't try them again. But I was desperate, in an airport, and thought this one, with a different setting and in a different era, might be..well...different. But, oh my GOSH! The other reviewer said it goes on and on and on. I could add: And on. I'm getting ready to take to the used bookstore, the copy I bought new yesterday. I got about half way through and didn't care anymore.

The hero gets angry and chides the heroine for trivial reasons. The heroine, supposedly very intelligent, does idiotic things that unnecessarily complicate the plot. The sex is blah, the romance is nil. The first few chapters were doing basically OK, but then it became more of the same, paragraph after painful paragraph. This had the makings of a book half its size.

I like this era and I liked the concept, but the development of the characters was slow and the plot never very interesting. That's the worst I can say about it, it simply wasn't interesting. I've also noticed that Ms. Feather tends to take a description or phrase and overwork it: In this book she repeatedly refers to the hero's eyes taking on an opaque look. (What does that mean, anyway?)

There will undoubtedly be readers who enjoy this book. That's why the publishers can keep making money from Ms.Feather's efforts, both current and reissues, as this was. But, some of those books are likely being bought by people like me who buy whatever is available, hoping it will be worth the money and time.

So, to ensure that I don't do a fool thing like this again, I hereby solemnly swear that this is the last Jane Feather book I'm going to buy. I've been disappointed one time too many.

Summary: I beg to differ!
Review: Did I read the same book as the two previous reviewers? This HISTORICAL romance covers the last period of the war of Independence. It was full of the grit, exhaustion and triumph of both the revolutionary army and the protagonists themselves. War is hell but love endures. I found this to be a moving, engrossing story which I didn't want to end. No vapid Regency this. Good job Jane!

Summary: Awful!
Review: Sorry, but this book was awful. Neither Bryony nor Benedict are likeable characters, especially Benedict. And the book went on and on and on...
