Rating: Summary: This is a MOST sincere apology. Review: This is one of the most elegant and sensitively written Romance stories I have ever encountered and I am forced to say that I am impressed by this writer's sublime command of her characters and her story. As a non-minority reader, I consider this book a primer in a disease which has never impacted either my life or that of my loved ones. As a true lover of Romance, I can only appreciate this writer's talent and be grateful that I've had an opportunity to share her story. This writer has recenly been the object of snide and unduly subjective criticism, and I truly wish I'd read her work before allowing myself to be swayed by it. "When Love Calls" is a stellar work and stand fully and freely on its own merits -- surely, no one reading it could feel or believe otherwise. I wish that I possessed this writer's courage and grace. Perhaps then, I would have signed my name. As it is, I hope that Ms. McFarland will see this note and appreciate the spirit in which it was written. My original criticism of her work was bitter, mean spirited, and ill advised. I stand corrected. S.J.
Rating: Summary: Exquisite! Review: This is the love story I have waited for! Intelligent, articulate, graceful, and with romance that doesn't depend solely upon sex for expression, "When Love Calls" deserves all of the praise I've seen and heard about it. One word of warning... watch your copy... this one is definitely a keepa! You will hear echoes of friends, family, and self as you turn these pages. As much fun as this story is, it still delivers some very solid punches that you will (I promise) need to re-read. Even my Kappa Alpha Psi hubby has read this one twice and is recommending it to his frat brothers! BET, if you're listening, this one NEEDS to be on your list for movie-making. Hear me? It NEEDS to be on the 'A' list!
Rating: Summary: When Love Calls Review: This was an excellent love story. It's wonderful to develop a friendship then to fall in love.
Rating: Summary: This one knocked my socks off ! Review: To paraphrase the Chi-Lites, all I have to say is, "have you seen him?" If you have seen Marcus Benton, could you give him MY telephone number?
Rating: Summary: "Sorry, wrong number," turns out to be a gift to widow. Review: We have all heard of long distance relationships and e-mail lovers, but conducting a long distance relationship as a result of a wrong telephone number is another story. Davida Lawrence, a widow with a ten-year-old daughter, is turning forty years old and is feeling all the angst that number brings. She has decided dating is not for her and tells herself she is content with her life. Then comes the call during a thunderstorm when someone with the same nickname "Butch" as her brother is calling "Cookie," Davida's nickname. After a lengthy conversation, it is determined to be a wrong number, but what a coincidence. Marcus cannot forget the voice of an angel, and he finds one excuse after another to hear Davida's voice. Davida cannot believe she is looking forward to Marcus' calls. Just when Marcus gives up meeting his evasive angel, another Twilight Zone/Outer Limits incident occurs to bring them together. When Love Calls is a touching story that looks into the older woman/younger man relationship, though the age differences of the protagonists are questionable as a great divide. At times the pace moved a little slowly, but it was necessary to get the full intensity of the story line. An enjoyable, worthwhile read.
