Summary: A Telephone + A Sexy Voice = A Romance
Review: "When Love Calls" by Gail McFarland is a delightful story about Davida Lawrence and Marcus Benton who meet by accident via a wrong phone number. Have you ever had someone call your house, they had the wrong number, but you were intrigued because that person's voice on the other end of the line SOUNDED SOOO GOOD? Well, the power and magnetism, teasing, and camraderie between Davida and Marc ended up being a fabulous love connection. After realizing he had the wrong person, Marc loved Davida's voice and personality so much that he kept calling back. They developed a phone relationship and, of course, met in person and the sparks continued to fly. Davida is the widowed mom to eight-year-old Destiny who throws in enough "Will you be my daddy lines" at Marcus to tug at the reader's heart. I enjoyed this story and was somewhat surprised, but yet delighted, at the final conclusion. Good job, Ms. McFarland.

Summary: Gail McFarland Dials Up a Winner
Review: "It was a dark and stormy night..." when Atlanta cartoonist Marcus Benton called his sister, "Cookie," in St. Louis. A bad connection distorted the voices and it wasn't until much later that Marcus discovered he hadn't reached Cookie Johnson, but Davida "Cookie" Lawrence. It was the start of a beautiful friendship.

Under the cloak of anonymity, Davida, a 40-year-old widow with an 8-year-old daughter, carries on a phone relationship with the 35-year-old Marcus. They talk about work, friendships, movies and aspirations.

A bond develops. Then, after three months of regular conversation, Marc is interested in developing an "LTR" (long-term relationship). He wants to come to St. Louis to reach out and touch. Davita's not having it. When they finally meet, sparks fly.

When Love Calls, is also a story about sex and the single mother. The who, what, where and when of her relationships are very important to Davida. They take place well within the context of her relationship with and responsibility to her daughter. There is also an interesting subplot about sickle cell anemia.

Gail McFarland has taken what could have been a very contrived plot and created something that affected me on many levels. The relationship between the two is very honest and very fresh. The telephone banter is both intimate and fun. And, unlike, the myriad of Internet romance stories, their telephone relationship adds an extra dimension of emotion through the interpretation of voice clues the characters can relate to. You can almost hear it when Marc calls Davida "Boo"!

Like the Atlantic Starr song says, "When love calls, you'd better answer."ΓΏ

Summary: A superb talent to be envied
Review: A wonderful book, full of passion and tenderness. Once again, Ms. MacFarland has shown that she has a flair with words and characterization, and can leave you dreaming about her wonderful characters for days after you have read her super books.

Whenever an author is popular, some people are going to love their work, and others are going to be envious.
The latter certainly seems to be the case with this book. There are a lot of frustrated aspiring writers out there who will do anything to make it big, and alas, think that they can be just like the person they envy. It is of course flattering, but it is also unfair if that person then gets accused of copying the imitator. People should be judged on their works and talents, and the review section here is not supposed to be a place for making soap box speeches. The fact that Ms. McFarland has so many other books out there proves who is guilty and who innocent.

Summary: In A Word...Sublime!!!
Review: For an athlete, a personal best is when she beats her own best time, or effort. For Gail McFarland, When Love Calls is her personal best. She's outdone herself! All her previous titles have been wonderful. I know, because I've read every one of them. When Love Calls surpasses wonderful and moves on to the sublime. All of her characters are richly drawn. This is the sort of story that pulls you in and wraps you in its seductive embrace. Not a word is wasted. Every expression is beautifully wrought and expertly executed. I especially enjoyed the conversations Davida and Marcus engaged in. For me, the ability to bring characters to life depends upon what they say to each other. The dialogue will ring true to your ears.

When Love Calls made me laugh and cry. On a personal note: Davida Lawrence and I share the trait that was mentioned in this wonderful novel. I hate to give a plot away, so suffice it to say, Ms. McFarland did her research, medical and otherwise. Don't miss this novel, because your friends will be talking about it for years to come. I know I'm telling everyone I care for about it!

Summary: BUY THIS BOOK!! BUY THIS BOOK!! BUY THIS BOOK!!
Review: Gail McFarland has a gift for writing character-driven stories filled with passion and realism. The heroine, Davida Lawrence, is recognizable as she deals with the stresses of widowhood and single-parenthood. She's probably your sister, best friend, coworker. Girlfriend is fierce! As for the hero, Marcus Benton is....oohhhh god! He's what every woman dreams for, wishes for, looks for! This book is so lyrical and touching and soul-deep romantic. I've read every Arabesque in print, and I can honestly say that this is the best! Definitely a keeper!

Summary: Talk to me Baby!
Review: Gail McFarland hit all right buttons and said all the right words in this story of a wrong number telephone call. This story is so neatly and elegantly written that there is almost no way to just tell someone about it. So take a tip from someone who has read this line from the very beginning, Arabesque has something very special in Gail McFarland and we are just blessed to share it.
