Rating: Summary: Not Your Typical Chick Lit.. Review: 5 stars! I love this book! I was so surprised by the story. I was expecting your run of the mill "chick lit" type story, but that is definitly not the case!It has much more heart than that! This story revolves around Jennifer, who lost her sister to suicide. As Jennifer tries to make her way as a New York playwright, she also has to overcome her fear and apprehensions about sex, love and relationships. This is no tawdry, sex filled beach book! It's much better than that!
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Book Review: I don't know how anybody could rate this book with only one star! I mean, come on now...this book is written so well, it's got humor, grief, strugle, and everything else all in one! There is a little bit of something for everybody in this book. I recomend that everybody go get it now. In one way or another, you will be able to relate to at least one of these unique characters.
Rating: Summary: A fun, if not serious read Review: I started reading this one on the bus late last week and finished it on a flight this weekend. I was laughing pretty hysterically through the first few chapters where the central character describes pulling together a first showcase for a play she's written recently. I've recently helped a friend produce a showcase, so much of the comedy struck a still-exposed nerve. The plot gets more serious as it continues and we get to hear all about the main character's sexual hangups , but still with a very good sense of comedy. (The title is somewhat tounge-in-cheek, she doesn't really have sex throughout most of the book.) It's not serious reading, but author Stephanie Lehmann writes very well with a good sense of timing and plot development, as well as some interesting, though somewhat stereotypical characters. Great for just relaxing with. Some would say that this is sort of a "chick book" and they might be right. I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Rating: Summary: A sexy and intelligent romp! Review: I stumbled upon this novel on one of my many trips to the bookstore. The story of Jennifer Ward, a 25-year-old who writes for Off Broadway plays, is rather interesting. She is one of the most neurotic characters I have recently read -- the character's overactive imagination sort of reminds me of Ally McBeal. Also, this is one of the few novels that addresses Off-Broadway plays without the bohemian undertones that one would expect from obscure productions. Jennifer has some rather interesting takes on sex, and the backdrop of her sister's suicide is an imperative factor in the development of the story. Thoughts While Having Sex is great new gem from a talented new voice in women's fiction. I am so glad I decided to give it a whirl.
Rating: Summary: Titled to sell books? Review: I truly believe "Thoughts While Having Sex" was so titled just to shock, and therefore sell, more books. It's not that it's a bad book, but the title really has nothing to do with the major plot. Heroine Jennifer has written a play about her dead sister, Diana, and the book revolves around play rehearsals and flashbacks to Diana. Diana committed suicide, and Jennifer has yet to get over it. Kelly, the actress hired to play Julia (who is based on Diana), reminds Jennifer of Diana. Jennifer has a bit of a crush on Kelly, and the two have a brief sexual encounter. In the end, Jennifer ends up with Peter, the director, and Kelly becomes a big star. It's worth reading, but I'd buy it used.
Rating: Summary: Keep the New Authors Coming!!! Review: In the last year I've searched for titles that would interest me and the few books i picked up I found to be disappointing. Picking up 'Thoughts While Having Sex' I read the first few pages and could not put the book down. I had noticed that the author was new and realized we need to give these new authors a chance and now I do,enjoying more and more books each month. I laughed and cried all at the same time. I got so involved in this book the characters became real to me and were apart of my life. I hope Stephanie Lehmann has more to come!!!!

Rating: Summary: Great Debut Review: Ms. Lehman's debut novel took me on a whirlwind ride of the life of a struggling writer trying to make New York her home. With the ghost of her sister riding on her shoulder Jennifer Ward struggles to find acceptance in her chosen career and overcome the inevitability of her own feelings of failure. Narrated with incredible wit, charm and frankness, Thoughts While Having Sex is a must read.
Rating: Summary: A fun read but with serious undertones Review: On the surface, this novel initially appears to be a typical "chick lit" type story in the style of Bridget Jones' Diary and other such books in this genre: a female main character (Jennifer) struggles with her career, her friends, and her love life. Although this book IS lighthearted and funny, it also deals with serious emotions, particularly as related to the past suicide of Jennifer's sister. The author handles this well, staying true to the emotions that Jennifer is feeling without turning the story into a drama that is consumed by this tragedy. The conclusion is satisfying is also more satisfying than in your average romantic fiction: because the final events occur several years after the main action of the book, the changes in Jennifer are much more believable (ie, given the time frame). All in all, this was a very enjoyable, thoughtful book, and I hope to read future works by this author.
