Summary: I Laughed Until I Cried!!!
Review: As a full figured woman struggling with my own weight issues and the prejudice that goes along with it, I thoroughly enjoyed this book that caught my eye and attention from the first paragraph. The scene in Leon's, the relationship with KJ and the mail box scam were my favorites. I was reading on the train when KJ's character was introduced. I unsuccessfully tried to contain the laughter while tears were running down my face and eventually gave up. I laughed so loud and hard that people around me started laughing and in turn wanted to know what I was reading!!! I have then passed the book around and told everyone I know to read it. I respect the way Van took a sensitive subject that needed to be addressed and presented it in a way that all can emphathize with. I also enjoyed the way Van developed Kayla and Sonny's relationship. The way the relationship grew and evolved was very realistic. I also wanted to note that there are many "Kayla's" out there - Beautiful full figured women who are together and have it "going on". I can't wait to read "Beeperless" and look forward to more of Van's books. (P.S. - I really feel a movie should be made from this book).

Summary: Buy It, Read It, Love It
Review: I wasn't that impressed with Beeperless Remote, but the cover of this book caught my eye. I promised myself that I'd only read a chapter before work but I could hardly put it down. From the beginning, this book caught my attention & made me laugh out loud. The characters are well developed; the author does an excellent job of introducing a serious subject (our attitudes about weight challenged people and food) without preaching. These characters are alive (and funny). Sonny and Kayla's dinner at Leon's is hilarious as is Sonny's attempt to redefine himself and his body. Who among us, in an attempt to reach a goal, hasn't slipped up once or twice? Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was the relationship between Sonny, Chet, and E; three men who were long-time friends and could hold a conversation (even when drunk) without a bunch of vulgarity and cursing. It was nice to read about a beautiful, strong, intelligent woman who just happens to be overweight; Kayla would put many thin women to shame. Mr. Whitfield did a fantastic job on this book & I highly recommend it.

Summary: This book is wonderful in a BIG way
Review: Thia book is an amusing, sparkling entertainment with a lesson -- that large folks are human too. The characters and situations and feelings are funny, touching, and real. I could identify because I am a Weight Watchers member (I am at goal, having had only a few pounds to lose) who had a crush on a male groupmate of mine whom I found very appealing (Never got to go out with him though, he was seeing someone), and also because I was in love with a generously-sized gentleman who took all kinds of abuse from society. If I could give this book 10 stars I would!

Summary: The laughs just keep coming!
Review: Van Whitfield intrigues us again with another humorous look at a brother who just can't quite get it together. Like the main character in Beeperless Remote, Sonny is a nice guy, but..... When Sonny finds himself blownup and dumped he joins a weight loss group in order to get his girlfriend back but instead learns to look inside himself and get insight into himself. Along the way he meets a great girl and learns to love her despite or inspite of her weight. I applaud the author for drawing ead characters, who are men as he is, who are far from perfect, sometimes downright silly but show a softer side of men's feelings. The issue of weight is presented in a humorous but humane manner that will make us all stop and think how we view people in a society that promotes thinness. Even in the African American community where most overweight women's view of themselves are healthier than that of white women, there are still prejudices and expectations to live up to the perfect body image with all the videos with bikini-clad rumpshakers. This book will have you laughing out loud.

Summary: Sweet and Motivating
Review: I recommend this book to anyone that appreciates a good love story, and needs inspiration and motivation on a quest for weight loss. For anyone that is struggling with their weight, they will find that a book like this serves as a reminder that they are not alone, and that others understand what they are going through. The author nailed the character of Kayla. She represents all of our mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, and best girl friends.

Summary: Read it now!
Review: If you've read Beeperless Remotes and Guys In Suites you will definately like Something's Wrong With Your Scale. This book mixes comedy with romance and keeps your attention (which is one of the things I like most). If you don't read this you'll be missing a treat. Warning: It may seem to move a little slow at times but believe me it WILL pick up and when it does you WILL be hooked!

Summary: Highly Entertaining!
Review: Sonny Walker is a single thirty-something brotha. He's funny, personable and has a decent job. However, most sistahs won't give him the time of the day.

The problem? Sonny is 75 pounds overweight. He is addicted to food and he can't get go over the fact that his ex-girlfriend Marsha dumped him over his weight gain.

Sonny wants to win Marsha back. His plan is to lose weight. He joins the FutraSystem weight-loss center. The food is horrible and the petite sized trainer has never been overweight. The only good thing about the program is another FutraSystem participant Kayla.

Kayla has it all- career, money and a house. However, Sonny cannot deal with her size 24 body.

Together, they embark on the FutraSystem program. Sometimes following it and most of the time, they make late runs for midnight dinners and snacks.

Kayla and Sonny become friends and this causes Sonny to exam his views on beauty and romance. After all, can't a woman be attractive and not be thin?

His friends say answer "no" to his question; whereas, Sonny's heart tells him "yes". Sonny grapples with society's prejudices against large sized women. He learns that beauty is not limited to cover girl models.

SOMETHING'S WRONG WITH YOUR SCALE is a hilarious romantic comedy. I would highly recommend this book.

Summary: Great Book
Review: This book was funny and keep me turning the pages. Van Whitfield has a winner in this book.

Summary: CALLING ALL CHUBBY CHASERS...
Review: This book is often funny and, at times, reads as if it were a stand up comedy routine. It tells the story of an overweight young man, Sonny Walker, who is dumped by his erstwhile girlfriend, Marsha, for his having put on about seventy five pounds more than she could stand. He then goes on a personal odyssey to lose weight, joining a weight loss group, where he meets the obese but luscious Kayla. This book is their story.

Funny and irreverent, the book suffers at times from stereotypic, one dimensional characterizations. It is a plot driven book that often has the reader thinking that something good is just around the corner on the next page. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't. The book has its ups and downs.

Summary: Wish i could put 10 stars!
Review: FINALLY!!!! A book that shows that overweight people have feelings, desires, and dreams. This was a wonderful book (and funny too I might add) that gives some insight into the struggles the overweight people have (i.e. stereotypes of being lazy and slobs, discrimination based on weight, etc.) Whitfield does a masterfully good job!!!
