Summary: Strong Debut Novel!
Review: Anne-Marie Saunders has a rosy future ahead of her. Highly intelligent, she is pursuing her university studies with the goal of becoming a doctor. She is her father's "star", but the light tarnishes somewhat when she reveals to her family that she and her boyfriend, Donovan are expecting a child. Her mother and younger sister, both whom seem to have negative feelings toward Anne-Marie, are most condescending to Anne-Marie's predicament, but she has more to worry about as she is forced to decide whether to stay in Jamaica with Donovan and child or go to America in order to pursue her medical degree.

Anne-Marie's best friend, Colleen is also going through strife in her life as she deals with the painful relationship she has with her mother. For the majority of her life, Colleen can't remember a time when things were good between her mother and she, and now older, she decides to go out on her own and leave the debris of their relationship. As Colleen's personal life begins to fall into place, her mother tries to make a reappearance, seemingly seeking forgiveness for past transgressions...will Colleen accept her mother's olive branch?

A Fool's Paradise, by Nancy Flowers Wilson was an interesting read. I enjoyed the backdrop of Jamaica and the flavor that the island represented in the novel. The two major storylines (Anne-Marie's and Colleen's) were nice concepts to build a story on, and the reader will finish the novel for the sole purpose of wanting to know WHAT will happen. Though I enjoyed the storylines and their potential, I did find the characters to be somewhat flat, and it was difficult for me to "see" them and get immersed into their lives altogether. I found the dialogue to be very well written for the most part, but at times, I thought it thick, and it represented a glitch to reading the novel smoothly throughout.

I think Wilson writes a strong debut novel, and her writing has great potential. I think there is a definite readership for A Fool's Paradise, and I look forward to reading future works by this new author.

Summary: A Fool's Paradise
Review: Experience the love story of Ann Maire and Donovan in A Fool's Paradise written by Nancy Flowers Wilson. They share a fun loving relationship filled with passion and trust. The story takes place in Jamaica and Wilson magically transports you onto the island. Donovan supports and encourages Ann Marie's college studies. Ann Marie's love for her man is intense but so is her desire to become a doctor. Her dream is to study abroad. When Ann Marie becomes pregnant Donovan expects her to change her career plans. They struggle for the first time to find a compromise. Read this book and find out if love conquers all. This book is an easy read. I read it in three days. If it weren't for work, chores and cooking I could have finished it in one sitting. After reading A Fool's Paradise and surviving the tear jerking conclusion my vote is a definite thumbs up and or five star rating.

Review: I am not a big fan of books that takes place outside of the United States, but this book has changed that view, if slightly.

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end as I knew these characters and with the exception of some words, I enjoyed it immmensely.

I thank Ms. Wilson on this book and writing characters that her readers can relate to. I also appreciate the glossary in the back.

I look forward to reading more from this author.

Happy reading......

Summary: What is a fool's paradise?
Review: I have just finished plowing through this book and still do not know what the author was referring to as a fool's paradise. The protagonist mentioned that she felt like Jamaica was a fool's paradise but I was waiting for her to mention why. This boring and unrealistic story paralleled the lives of two young ladies but they never came together in any way and I had some problems with the story. First of all, what was the underlying reason that Anne-Marie did not get along with her mother? It certainly had to be more than color. However, I do feel that Ms. Wilson did a good job of developing and explaining the resentment with Colleen and her mother. I felt that there was a lot of unnecessary dialogue in this book. For example, the pages and pages spent on Anne-Marie arguing with her sister about a dress she wore without permission. Also, even if your friends do not get along with their parents, I don't feel they would truly disrespect them like Anne-Marie was willing to do to Ms. Margaret. I could go on, but if Ms. Wilson continues to write, I hope that she would find an editor that would point out issues such as these to make for a better story. Otherwise, I have no intention of wasting my time reading another page, chapter, or novel like this.

Summary: A Fool's Paradise -- A MUST READ!!
Review: I just finished reading "A Foool's Paradise," and I enjoyed every moment of it. I could barely put the book down because I was so eager to find out what happened next.

I was particularly impressed with Nancy Flowers Wilson's development of the plot and the characters in such a real life fashion. I felt like the characters were real people who I knew personally. The trials and tribulations that they each faced in their lives were so real that I had to remind myself that this was a fictional story.

I became so involved in the lives of Anne Marie and Colleen that I felt like they were my friends. As a result, I was annoyed with some of the other characters for not treating them well. I was very angry with Ms. Margaret for being such an evil person and not thinking about how her behavior was affecting her daughter, but I also felt sorry for her because she had lived such a miserable life. I was infuriated by Anne Marie's mother and sister for being too jealous and narrow-minded to be proud of Anne Marie's successes. I was totally outdone with Donovan for not being man enough to allow the woman the he loved to be a woman and make her own decisions. I truly felt that Anne Marie would have been able to travel overseas to pursue her dreams AND be a good a wife and mother, but Donovan did not have enough faith in her. I absolutely loved Mr. Miller and Mr. Saunders for being such wonderful men. They were great role models who knew that part of being a man is being sensitive, caring and a role model for his children. I was moved by the way Mrs. Wilson developed their characters to capture that without sacrificing their manhood.

I thought that the closing of the book was excellent. She tied up all of the loose ends and left enough room for a sequel if she chooses to go that route. When I finished reading the book, I felt extremely satisfied.

I am eagerly awaiting future works by Nancy Flowers Wilson!
