Rating: Summary: Great Storyline Review: A Fool's Paradise is a story focused on dreaming if the roads and avenues that lead you to that dream are not the ones you planned on taking. The main character Ann Marie, a bright intelligent, rational young lady, must face the challenges of family life, relationships and cultural boundaries in order to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. She finds that always being the "Star" in her father's eye does not help her relationship with her loose sister or her gossiping mother. Her relationship with her long time boyfriend is put to the test when she must make a decision take her away from it all. Not to mention the realization that many women of Jamaica never have the opportunity to do half the academic feats she has been obliged to do. The other characters such as Ms Margaret, a spiteful, controlling woman, and Colleen, once shy and vulnerable but now independent and sassy, spices up the story a bit. This mother and daughter relationship is far more then the run of the mill rebellion. Ms. Margaret past comes out to the light in the mist of it all. I suggest reading this novel if you plan on leisurely enjoying and entertaining story. The underlying story line is great but the writing style is geared toward a laid-back read not a fast page-turner. All in all, the novel does keep you interested but allow about a week to enjoy it. Rating: Summary: Loved this jamaican confection! Review: A friend gave me a copy of this book, and being a 31yr old white boy who typically reads lots of killer/thriller/horror books, I don't usually read "romance novels". I'll tell you what - I couldn't put 'A Fool's Paradise' down every morning/evening on the subway, and once in a while, I had to keep on reading hanging out at the platform. The story really had me hooked from the beginning and trying to guess what was going to happen at every twist. It was a great read for me, and I think you'll enjoy the ride! (and now i'm craving a visit to Jamaica, mon!)
