My Lord Destiny

Summary: profoundly annoying
Review: I confess that I only got as far as page 84 before I couldn't stand it anymore, the interactions between the characters were so absurd. I just don't buy a scene where two complete strangers fall compeltely in love just because she saw him without a shirt on. That was the implausible part. The annoying aspect was that all four principals were absurdly overdrawn. No living being could be as calculating as Gavan or as simultaneously flighty and appealing as Ms. Byron tells us that Gwyneth is. She certainly never shows us any evidence of the girl's charm, although there do seem to fairly good reasons for taking her to see a psychiatrist. Oops, they didn't have psychiatrists in 1820. Not that that would have bothered Ms. Byron. She puts lots of things into her book that were unheard of in 1820. Don't bother with this one unless you like magic so much that you are willing to ignore wooden writing, formulaic emotions( " Priss's eyes widened at the sight of him. She might have seen a male chest or two, but not like this one,") and downright silly characterization. The plot seems to hinge on an improbable family's posession of some kind of centuries-old magic. I didn't care enough to find out.

Review: I read MY LORD DESTINY over Christmas and just loved it. What a wonderful, tender, romantic, heart-warming tale! It's also full of humor. I highly recommend it as a cure for those after-holiday blues.

It wasn't exactly what I expected either, the back cover of the book says that the hero, Gavan, appeares in the heroine's, Priscilla, millinery shop to purchase fripperies, and that isn't at all how they even met. This book is very disappointing. END

Summary: Ev e Byron is one good storyteller
Review: In 1820 Wales, Gavan St. Cloud, the wealthy Marquess of Penwyth allows William Whitmore to search some mounds on his estate. Gavan's sister Gwyneth accompanies William on his excavation. They find a book that William and Gwyneth want to take to London. Willing to do anything to make Gwyneth happy, Gavan agrees to accompany them to the big city. He even thinks he might spend a minute or two to find a wife so he can have an heir, but expects no one to love the isolated St. Aldan.

Gavan soon meets William,s eccentric sister Priscilla, owner of a millinery shoppe. To his surprise, he finds himself very attracted to the woman, but she not only ignores his flirting, she treats him with scorn. Inside her heart, Priscilla realizes she is half way in love with the handsome Welshman, but she was burned once before. However, a legend surfaces that forces Gavan to risk everything to save the lives of his beloved sibling, her beau and his cherished Priscilla.

MY LORD DESTINY combines humor with suspense in a well-written Regency romance. The odd traits of the lead cast make for amusing interplay even as danger mounts. The addition of a Welsh legend provides a feel of mysticism to the overall plot. The secondary coupling of the lead characters, siblings add warmth and jocularity to the tale. Still, what makes Eve Byron,s novel so delightful is the entertaining relationship between Gavan and Priscilla.

Although the characters are funny and exhibits interesting hobbies, the story did not seem to glue together. If you like light romance with a little bit of the mystical plot. This may be the book for you.
