Summary: A Great, Fast Read
Review: Amanda Stevens' latest didn't have the kind of depth necessary to make it a five-star book, but it was still a superlative, emotional pageturner. Nina Fairchild's estranged husband is dead and she has just given birth to his child when a fire breaks out in the hospital. She escapes in time, but her baby has disappeared... Six months later, she sees a baby she is sure is hers, both because of his resemblance to hers and because the boy's "mother" looks exactly like a woman who befriended her when she was pregnant, then proceeded to disappear. Nina confronts the woman's brother, Grant, who is his sister's most steadfast supporter. He agrees to help her find out what happened to her baby so that he'll be able to prove that it isn't his sister's. But as the lies pile up and all of Nina's evidence begins to disappear, she has to hope that this strong, handsome man will trust her enough to know the truth.From the slam-bang opening to the very last page, Stevens' story keeps you from ever putting it down. I read it in one night, even though I had no intention of doing that when I started it. The characters' reactions and emotions were real (with the exception of a contrived misunderstanding at the end) and the story was filled with a lot of good twists and turns. One thing I especially appreciated was that the sexual content was kept to a minimum. I always hate it in these books when people whose kids have just been kidnapped decide to take the time out for sex when they could be looking for the kid. In a certain context, a romance can do without the sex and still be a very romantic, emotional story, as Stevens proves here. It's the kind of book you can certainly enjoy when you're reading it, though the style doesn't make it something that will stick with you too long after it's over. Still, it's a fast-paced story with good characters and a satisfying ending that's definitely worthwhile for anyone looking for an entertaining read.
