Review: NAME DROPPING by Jane Heller

Jane Heller's NAME DROPPING is the tale of one average school teacher who discovers that there is yet another woman living in the same building with the exact same name, and finds that this other woman's life is a lot more fun and exciting and glamorous. What would it be like to live that sort of life?

When Nancy Stern starts getting invitations to famous celebrity's homes, she knows something is not right. One invitation could have been a mistake, but getting mail on a regular basis that was definitely not HER mail was odd. An American Express bill finally confirmed that there was another Nancy Stern in the building. And this one was way out of her league. The "famous" Nancy Stern was friend to the Stars. She interviewed them, and in turn was invited to gala events and had boyfriends with foreign sounding names such as "Jacques". She was tall and glamorous and supposedly rich.

The "average" Nancy Stern was a preschool teacher who definitely did not go out on the town as regularly as the other Nancy Stern. She spent many nights at home eating leftover pizza and watching television. But when one of "glamorous" Nancy's many admirers calls and leaves a message, Nancy decides to follow up and goes on a blind date with him. Bill has never met the Glamorous Nancy, but has a mutual friend, and being new to the city he seeks out Nancy on this blind date. What he does not know is that he ends up dating the "average" Nancy, and things start to get complicated as their relationship starts to blossom.

As Nancy gets involved with Bill, other things begin to happen. Her life is turned upside-down with a couple of attempted burglaries, a purse snatching and a murder! She finds herself living a not-so-boring life and finds her own life in jeopardy.

NAME DROPPING was my second book by Jane Heller. Not as good as FEMALE INTELLIGENCE, it still was a fun read and kept me hooked till the end. As with all chick lit, it was a book with a lot of action with some hard-to-believe scenes. It's not real life, but a great escape. This reader recommends NAME DROPPING. A great beach read!

Summary: A delightful and comical drama
Review: Nancy Stern is a pre-school teacher at the prestigious Small Blessings Nursery School. She lives in Manhattan in the swinging seventies, but has no man in her life. On the whole, Nancy is contented until the "other Nancy Stern moves into the penthouse of the same building. The second Nancy is a free lance writer, who hobnobs with the rich and famous, and attends embassy parties and special movie screenings. Nursery Nancy knows all this because she seems to always receive Penthouse Nancy,s mail and phone calls.

When Bill Harris calls to ask Nancy for a blind date, he gets the teacher, who accepts the offer, pretending to be the more famous Nancy. Sparks fly between Nancy and Bill that lead to the teacher feeling guilty for her masquerade. She ends their relationship by their third date because she cannot cope with her deception any longer. Bill learns the truth and walks out on her, but she concocts a plan to bring him back into her life even after she discovers his secret.

Jane Heller writes a delightfully funny drama filled with suspense, action, romance, and a touch of mystery. The heroine learns the hard way that to "thine own self be true" is the only way to live as trying to pretend to be someone else is stupid and perhaps dangerous. The story line is filled with rich imagery and deep characters. NAME DROPPING is a first class reading experience.

Summary: Who said teaching Pre-School wasn't exciting?
Review: Nancy Stern is a pre-school teacher who thinks she has no life. She goes to work, spending everyday with 4 year olds and coming home to an empty apartment. Her only excitement is on weekends when she reads a good book or spends time with her best friend and co-worker, Janice.

Until one day, Nancy begins to receive invitations to prestigious social events, gifts and phone calls from important people. What is going on? These can't be for ordinary pre-school teacher Nancy Stern!

"Name Dropping" mixes the every day life of a pre-school teacher with the suspense of an Agatha Christie novel. Just when you think that the novel is going to wrap up the story, a twist happens and Nancy is off on another adventure in her new, exciting world. A place that contains a woman with the same name as her living in her building and a new boyfriend that seems to be bringing some excitement and stability into her life.

This is a book I couldn't put down and couldn't wait to read the next chapter to find out what happened. Jane Heller's "Name Dropping" takes you on a ride that you won't forget.

Summary: I beg to differ
Review: No, I'm sorry--I like a romantic, funny read as much as the next person, but Name Dropping had me wanting to throw the book across the room in frustration. Teacher Nancy was so totally inept in her celebrity-interviewer pose that no sane guy would have asked her out a second time. Lots of unanswered questions about celebrity Nancy, and some ridiculous scenes including one where teacher Nancy tracks dog-doo across an apartment (she didn't notice the smell coming up on the elevator?) on a mission of subterfuge. A plot line fueled by ridiculous misunderstandings and dishonesty.

Summary: The Name Game
Review: Only this time it was not a game. Preschool teacher Nancy Stern is given letters and dry cleaning items that are not hers. They are addressed to her, but she did not own any of these items or know the men who wrote the love letters. She soon realized that there was another woman living in her apartment building with the exact same name. Now Nancy was not the biggest fan of this woman as the celebrties she interviewed for a living were, but she had never imagined in the woman's murder.
I really enjoyed this book and often I could not put it down because i had to know what happened next. I found the characters easy to relate to and very likeable. The only thing that I found unsatisfactory about this book was that in the beginning the plot seemed to drag and I almost put it down, but I kept reading it and it turned out that I really enjoyed this book. I would like to read more Jane Heller novels in the future.

Summary: It really makes you wonder
Review: Preschool teacher Nancy Stern could be the "spokesperson" for every thirtysomething woman looking for a little excitment in her life. I love her character because she has a passion for teaching and helping children who in some cases are nothing but "trophies" in their parent's lives. Then "WHAM". She gets forced into another woman's life who just happens to have the same name she does. Having a "what the hell" attitude she accepts a phone call, meets a wonderful man, falls in love and changes her life for the better. Man, I wonder if there is a woman out there with my name with an interesting career.
