Summary: Adrenaline Rush!
Review: This book should be made into a movie! Absolutely heart stopping reading. Couldn't put it down 'til it was all over!

Summary: Great Book!
Review: This is my second N.D. book. The first was Plum Island. Spencerville was a page turner - very well written all in all and a good story. Yeah, maybe the story was predictable, but that doesn't matter. I'm definitely going to read more of his books. I would definitely recommend this book.

Summary: An unusual cliff-hanger!
Review: Spencerville by Nelson DeMille

Spencerville is the poignant love story of Keith and Annie, reunited after a twenty five year separation. Keith went to Viet Nam right out of High School, then came home to a government job in Washington D.C., while Annie, stayed in Spencerville and married the sadistic county sheriff. Secretly, Annie still corresponded with Keith, using her sister as a go- between. Keith returned to take over his family farm, to live alone. From here the story follows a predictable path, resulting in the inevitable reunion. There are frequent side trips into the unexpectedly bizarre, provided by Annie's husband, Cliff. Just when you feel it is safe to take a deep breath, he surfaces with typical sociopathic behavior and you begin to wonder if love will ever conquer all and rid Spencerville of their least law abiding citizen.

The Author has a knack of lulling you into complacency and then standing you on the edge of the crumbling precipice. If you like a combination love story, and spell binding tale of horror this will occupy a space on your book shelf.

Nelson DeMille is also the Author of "The General's Daughter", "The Gold Coast", "The Charm School" and "Word of Honor".

Summary: Not his best book.
Review: I had read 3 DeMille books before diving into this one. I was very excited because I had recently purchased all the novels he had ever written. I found Spencerville to be a catchy title and the synopsis at the back grabbed my attention so I chose to read that one out of all his other books I had just gotten. Well, after about 100 pages, I started worrying. I was devasted to find this book to be so boring, uninteresting and void of likeable characters. I was desperatly hoping that this one "not so great book" was a mere over-sight. And thankfully, it was. I have read two more of his books since then (mayday and catherdral) and both were soooooooooo amazing! I read both books in record time.

I found Spenceville to be far too predictable. One could have guessed the ending after about 10 pages. The book got rather lenghty and windy at times. It is not to say that I regret having read it, far from it. I did enjoy a few scenes but it is definitely not his best.

Summary: Brutality toward herione was sickening.
Review: I love Nelson DeMille and was pretty much enjoying this book until towards the end when Annie is held hostage and sexually and physically brutalized by her husband. It was extremely disturbing and went on forever. It truly made me feel that in order to write something like this that perhaps Nelson DeMille has a problem. I could barely get through it. What a disappointment from an author I used to think it would be such fun to meet!

Summary: Disappointing effort from a talented writer.
Review: I became a huge fan of Mr. DeMille after by chance reading "Plum Island." I followed that with "The General's Daughter" (mostly because I wanted to read it before the movie comes out),which I also enjoyed, and now "Spencerville." I was very disappointed with the stupidity of our hero, Keith, and the weakness of our heroinne, Annie. For a retired intelligence officer courted by the President, Keith sure acted stupidly on many occassions. I also kept despising Annie for being another weak female character staying in an unhappy and abusive marriage. Our antaganist, Cliff, fluctuated from being a stupid hick and a "cunning" doer of evil. He would have been more threatening if hewouldn't have been so stupid (but maybe that was a subtle technique to connect Keith and Cliff as spiritual brothers...they're both stupid!) I gave the book three stars because I did want to find out how it ended, which is a tip of the hat to Mr. DeMille. I was, however, shocked to find that after fighting through my frustrations with the characters and their stupidity, that I was rewarded with a few chapters of extreme brutality towards Annie that not only made my stomach turn but was completely out of tone for the rest of the book and for Mr. DeMille himself. The first three quarters of the book had a few moments of the charm that I have come to expect from Mr. DeMille but it was not sustained throughout. I had the impression that he wanted to write a great literary romance and it came off as cheesy. It was a very frustrating and inconsistant read and if it was my first DeMille book I would never have read another. But I have not lost faith and will continue to read the entire DeMille library.

Summary: Good book but not his best.
Review: This was the fourth book I read by Nelson DeMille and this all in a 6 months frame. I fell in love with Nelson DeMille as an author when I read his novel Plum Island in June. Since then, I read The General's Daughter as well as Word of Honor and both kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning. When I got to Spenceville, I was captivated with it at the beginning, but as the story went on, I found myself somewhat bored with the all too "predictable" plot. It was still a cute story but a little too "feel-good" ending for me. The characters are easy to identify with but it is hard to create any real "attachement" to them because of their "whishy-washyness". This is not to mean that I hated the book and do not recommend it to anyone but simply that if you too are a DeMille fan, you may not want to keep this one for last. It is really light and an easy read.

Summary: Creative, Captivating, and Terrific
Review: This was the first work of Nelson Demille I have read and I must say it was outstanding. Although it started a little slow, once the action picked up I found myself reluctant to put it down. I have recommended Spencerville to all of my friends.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good, but a bit drawn-out and overworked.
Review: Being a new reader of DeMille's works (Plum Island being my first), I cannot use past works well to judge this one. However, I can state that after reading the first two chapters, I was caught up in work and the book did not invite me back as Plum Island did.

This book, while entertaining, was also "spread out" too long. The final chapters were repetetive and I bored of them quickly.

Spencerville seemed to be based around too many romantic scenes and too much waiting, but it was a good read for a few days.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Completely entertaining - I couldn't put it down.
Review: Spencerville has characters you can care about and situations that are very realistic. If you've ever lived in a small town in the midwest, you'll recognize Spencerville. This book caught my attention from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. I've recommended it to everyone.
