Summary: A fun read, but a little far fetched!!
Review: Spencerville was a fun book to read. It was action packed, there is a definite hero, there is love, action, suspence, and there is revenge, but it is a little difficult to believe parts of the story line. I have met people like Cliff Baxter, but none of them would go to the extremes that Baxter goes to in this novel.

This book reminds me of a sophisticated "First Blood". Instead of the hero being a rugged John Rambo, the hero is a well dressed, clean shaven Keith Landry who, instead of being a Green Beret War hero, is a top government secret agent who happened to date the Sherrif's wife when he was in high school and college. The action in this book is great, but it seems a little far fetched. I would read this book as entertainment, but wouldn't spend too much time trying look at the realism.

Summary: Ville Read This Again
Review: Great book. The tension builds up as the story goes on towards the climatic finale. Good romance too. I would have liked Landry to do a couple of things differently but the fact that I care enough to make that point of view shows that I was hooked' into that one!

Summary: Very Disappointed
Review: I listened to the audiotape version of this book and found the storyline boring and idiotic. The main character (Keith Landry) was supposedly an government operative during the Cold War having gone back to his hometown of Spencerville after the Cold War ended and he had been relieved of duty. Well, if he acted as stupidly as an operative as he did when confronted with Cliff Baxter, the antagonistic, jealous, redneck police chief, he would have been dead a long time ago. One would think that Keith would have more "street smarts."

In addition, his endless use of one word ,"yes" or "no", answers to questions made me realize Keith had a flat, bland personality that he carried throughout the story.

If I hadn't had a long commute, I would have shut the tape off after the first side.

Summary: Another DeMille winner.
Review: There are books that take time to read, books you make time for and books you steal time for. "Spencerville" is in the latter category...it never left my side from the minute I started it and kept me up late.

Great characters, very deeply drawn...both the heroes and villains. I felt I got to know them all. The plot is straight forward, but the journey to its conclusion is fast paced, tense, filled with twists and turns and makes you turn the pages rapidly.

There is enough wry humor, sarcasm and cynicism from the protagonist (Keith Landry) and his allies to allow the reader a chance to relax from the nonstop action...refreshing and almost necessary in a book this lengthy.

The major bad guy (Cliff Baxter) is truly despicable, but devious, dangerous, deadly and cunning (and he wears a badge). It is quite easy hoping he gets what's due him.

I have now read all the novels of Nelson DeMille. Only "Cathedral" was a disappointment. Every other one I highly recommend and still think "The Charm School" is my favorite.

Summary: One of the better ones
Review: I found after reading Plumb Island I became a fan and started to read others like Cathedral and General Daughter. Spencerville appealed to me because of the setting..A small town and a guy who returns to fulfill his soul. I would have preferred a different ending but the book kept me reading. Better than Cathedral and Gen. Daughter.

Summary: A Good Demille Read
Review: Nelson Demille is the best. If you want to read and author who varies his work, is easy to read, is exciting, and creates great characteres: read his works. Spencerville is pretty good. It is not his best work. The Gold Coast wins that title easily, but the book is a good read. An interesting story about a former secret agent of some sorts returning home and starting over. If you have not read Demille: START! If you liked this book make sure to read: Catherdal, Word of Honor, and especially the Gold Coast.

Summary: Subtle, Sexual, Sensational!
Review: This is my favorite Demille thriller. I just read the last 200 pages as if it were a movie in itself! With subtle social commentaries regarding small town life, war atrocities, then leading right into sadistic sexual acts of a depraved Sheriff. A cast of characters that will take you from laughter (love the hippie friends) to out loud gasps!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Tension!
Review: DeMille has an uncommon ability to pull you into the world of his characters. Spencerville did a better job of creating real fear and tension than all of his other books. The evil sherriff was probably demille's best bad guy. Truly EVIL!...and the love story was one of the best I've read.

Summary: One of the best books I have read.
Review: I couldn't put the book down. The characters are great and the story is fun. This is one of those books that I made all of my friends read and they did. We are all in college and don't have time to read for pleasure but we found time. There is love, drama, suspense-- it is awesome. Your loss if you don't read it. =)

Summary: Spencerville
Review: This was one of Demille's best works. I could not put this one down until I had read the entire story. If you read no other book by Nelson Demille, make it this one.
