Rating: Summary: What a Wonderful Book! Review: An Englishman has three daughters by three women in different parts of the world. Unable to be with them as they grow up, he sends for them when they are older so they can be together. The book revolves around each daughter and what impact their absent father has on their lives. One of the daughters is Scottish, the second Chinese, and the third an English girl raised in India. The descriptions of the scenery and total ambiance of each locale made me see, smell, and feel where they were. When I read about Ailsa Rose in Scotland, I saw the mists and waterfalls of the highlands. With Li-an, China came alive for me with its gentle women but politically unstable atmosphere. With Genevra, I saw the poverty and untouchables of India. I could see everything so clearly because Davis drew me into the stories. I confess to liking Ailsa Rose's story better than the other two though I got emotional through parts of it. Li-an drew my sympathy because she inherited her blue eyes from her father and had to always keep her eyes lowered because her countrymen would kill her if they knew. Generva had to bear the shame of her father and mother's adulterous affair that resulted in her birth. Anyone who loves reading about foreign places and romance will love this book. I don't consider this a romance book but romance is a strong factor. The book has two sequels that I haven't read yet but I bought them as soon as I read Too Deep For Tears. It's a truly wonderful book.

Rating: Summary: I felt as though I lost friends when I finished the book... Review: Davis' characters are women you KNOW...The author weaves a tapestry of events that brings out emotions you know intimately. Ailsa is that idealistic and innocent woman who we all must lose within ourselves at some point...and through her we can grieve that loss. She knows she must take a "hero's journey" leaving all she loves behind. Her half sisters--both from distant lands-- China and an English girl born and raised in India--evoke compassion and remind us of the universal tie that binds women everywhere. Davis' "richness of spirit" and illustration of Celtic spirituality is truly magical...as is the depth of love between Ian and Ailsa. Finally, a book about woman in search of father
Rating: Summary: This is my all-time favorite book - ever!!!! Review: I first read Too Deep for Tears when it was released in 1989 and can trace my love for Scotland back to it. Since that time I have interviewed Kathryn Lynn Davis. She is as fascinating as a person as she is talented as a writer, and her style is lush, lyrical, and sensual. I re-read this book whenever she releases a new book, and the fact that I have an advanced copy of the third and final book in this trilogy sitting in my living room means I will be up all night reading and crying. Too Deep for Tears is NOT to be missed. TTFN, Laurie Likes Books
Rating: Summary: A must read for anyone that loves more than just romance! Review: I loved this book, it was so vivid in the character development, the emotions so clearly presented...you truly feel as if you are there...I love the different story lines and different settings each sister has...all the love and loss is of such a realistic manner that after you read the book, you have gained a space in your heart for each character...and even after you close the book and place it back on the shelf...they remain with you as clear as when you first discover them the day you opened the book.
Rating: Summary: An Unforgettable Book! Makes your heart ache! Review: I read this book 8 years ago and have been looking for the author ever since to read her other books. This book has stuck with me. After finishing the book I was sad for weeks--it was so heart wrenching. You'll never be sorry you read this book. To me, the saddest part was the girl from Ireland leaving her first-love to move to England and marry a man and have children with him. I just hated it when she left Ian. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: I was shocked......... Review: I was pleasantly suprised at the depth of feeling this book evoked. It's been a long time since I have been moved so by characters in a book. I had a hard time putting the book down, I felt I was a part of their world. I could imagine Glen Affric, and the heartache that Mairi, Ailsa, Li-an, and Genevra suffered, all because of the father they never knew. I would recommend this book for anyone, not just "romance" buffs.....it touches your heart.
Rating: Summary: A novel that will wrench your heart. Review: If you haven't yet discovered Kathryn Lynn Davis, get to your nearest bookstore and buy every one of her lushly written novels! This particular book is so full of romance and heartbreak that you will not be able to put it down until you know what will happen next. The story is about 3 women, Ailsa Rose, who grew up in the Scottish highlands, Wan Li-An, who lives in Imperial China, and Genevra Townsend, who lives in the English colony in India. The thread that binds these women together is their English father, Charles Kittridge. None of them know their father intimately as he is a diplomat who travels extensively and none of them know of each other. While the stories of Li-An and Genevra are exciting and troublesome, it's Ailsa's story that will capture your attention and keep you reading. She who has lived her entire youth in the glens of Scotland loves to the point of being soulmates her childhood friend, Ian. The wanderlust in her blood, courtesy of the father she has never known, propels her to spurn her love for Ian and marry an Englishman so that she can see the world beyond the glen. Davis captures their true love and searing heartbreak in words so eloquently that you will feel their pain as your own. Ailsa leaves the Glen Affric with her husband and doesn't return for 20 years when her very ill father summons her back along with Li-An and Genevra. I read this book years ago and recently discovered that two sequels have been written for it. I decided to read the entire trilogy at once and haven't been sorry! The follow-ups are: All We Hold Dear and Somewhere Lies the Moon.

Rating: Summary: I was shocked......... Review: Kathryn Lynn Davis' lyrical and sumptuous writing style shines more strongly in Too Deep for Tears than in any of her other books. Readers looking for immensely emotional and cathartic prose should get their hands on a copy of this book immediately. The characterizations are exquisite, the descriptions of Scotland, England, India, and China so real you'll feel as though you're there, and the connection you'll feel to the characters and the lands will last long after you've finished the book. Just be sure to have a jumbo-sized box of Kleenex handy - you'll need it. We've reviewed all three books in this trilogy at All About Romance, and I was lucky enough to interview the author a few years ago. She is an amazing talent.
