Rating: Summary: A good read-despite the errors Review: Overall, I thought Mrs. McMillan's latest novel was very good. I thought it was a quick read that was written in a "soap opera story-line" style, somewhat representative of her earlier works-"Knowing, One Better, and Blue Collar Blues". Even though I thought the novel was good, I do agree with some of my fellow reviewers, there were too many writing/editing mistakes which I would expect from a novice author, but a seasoned one? For example characters names were spelled inconsistently, Erik vs Eric (ch. 4); Bette vs Betty (ch. 29) and simple editing mistakes were not corrected (pg. 230) "That night they didn't MADE love..."-And of course, the inclusion of all these historical dates and (overly)detailed medical facts-I didn't understand the relevance. Still with the errors, "This Side Of Eternity" is a great book and for those of you who this is your first R. McMillan novel-try her others, they are great reads and you won't be disappointed!! Good work Mrs. McMillan.
Rating: Summary: Moving Family Drama Review: The triumphs and tragedies of the Russell family will keep you on an emotional roller coaster. This is a griping story about the ties that bind a family. You follow Anne, Bentley, Mae and the other members of the family on their journey to learn life's lessons. This novel makes you look at your life and think about the lessons you've learned.
Rating: Summary: I threw this across the room - in disgust. Review: This book was a combination of fact (details the Black experience in Memphis, TN) and fiction (details the saga of a Black family that has experienced many tragedies). I think that Ms. McMillan should have stuck with just writing fiction since I just felt more irritated with each page. Even with the things that you see in the films today, I can't remember coming across anything with more illogical plot points and sloppy construction in telling a story. This reminds me of when we had to write fiction for our 3rd grade English class except for the fact that those stories were much better. Avoid this book and read her earlier titles, such as One Better, Knowing and Blue Collar Blues.
Rating: Summary: Good try but falls short Review: This has the potential to be a wonderful book. McMillan's attempt to incorporate events from the Civil Rights movement could have helped make this a gripping family epic. Unfortunately, the historical events are like unrelated news flashes interrupting the storyline. This black soap opera is long and unimpressive. The characters lacked substance and believability. This was less the story of a Southern Black family caught in the Civil Rights era and more of a movie-of-the-week melodrama.
Rating: Summary: Soooo Good! Review: This novel was so good that I read it in one night. That's right, I started reading at 8 pm and didn't put it down until 4 am the next day. True to her style, Rosalyn McMillan wrote a novel that was rich in plot and kept me wanting more. There was something real in each character, that I am sure we could all relate to. She covered so many taboo, but real life crisis in the american family, including spousal abuse, incest, mental illness, white collar crimes, gambling, povery and on, on... Most significant to me was her ability to cover the aforementioned subjects, while also supplying her readers with rich afro-american historical facts. Job Well Done!
Rating: Summary: Promising Historical Fiction Review: THIS SIDE OF ETERNITY is a fictionalized account of the civil rights era and beyond, and centers on the lives of two African-American women--an aunt and her niece. The novel covers the period from the 1960's to the present, and the setting is located basically in Memphis, Tennessee.
Although Rosalyn McMillan generally tells a good story (I liked her other four novels as well), her inadequate knowledge and sometimes awkward use of grammar and sentence structure can be annoying. Ironically, this weakness has not improved over time because her earlier novels were not quite as flawed. If readers can overlook this minor distraction, however, they will enjoy THIS SIDE OF ETERNITY for its fine characterization, interesting plot, and unique perspective on a turbulent period in America's history.
Rating: Summary: Much Drama Review: This Side of Eternity starts slow. I had a hard time getting into the book. My friends said keep reading it gets better. One family with so many tragedies. Where was the family love? The story was nothing like the book cover
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down. Review: This Side of Eternity was a gripping saga about very interesting characters. It addresses mental disabilities, spousal abuse and makes you believe in miracles again. The strong bonds of family was felt and appreciated. Anne Hamilton, the heroine, was a very realistic character. I really empathized with her when she found out about her illness. And finally,I especially loved the way Ms. McMillan subtley weaves in the erotic scenes. I look forward to reading her next novel.
Rating: Summary: VERY INTERESTING Review: This side of Eternity was my favorite book by Rosalyn Mcmillan since Knowing. Other than the historical part of the book, which I felt was unecessary, I thought it was a very interesting story with a lot of meaning. Anne who was my favorite character in the book was an example of the choices that we make sometime. I think her decision to mary that brute was due to a lack of proper guidance, lack of unity in her family, and vulnerability which got her mistaking lust for love. Anne's involvement with Scott Hamilton, was like putting a curse on herself and her family. Prior to meeting Scott, I think Anne had a very promissing future. I think she would've been far more successeful at an earlier age without Scott. This story was very touching dealing with real life issues and very spiritual. I'm sure a lot of us have heard stories similar to Annes or perhaps even lived it. It's been a while Rosalyn. I hope you're working on your next book.
Rating: Summary: Rosalyn does it once again!!! Review: This was a very good read. I had purchased this book well over a year ago and just recently decided to read it. It becomes apparent that Rosalyn is challenging her sibling (Terry).
