Rating: Summary: Tradition Review: Like looking through a prism. This book keeps the reader looking over his shoulder as another strand has been drawn into the story. Well written indeed.
Rating: Summary: Willing to re-read. Review: The rating I have given this book reflects the fact that I would enjoy re-reading it.Without the use of the perennial excitements of sex, vulgarity and violence, the author draws one into experiencing life with others in a changing, exciting world. The Rev. Canon David E. Pettengill
Rating: Summary: The Vicar of Afton Review: The Vicar of Afton is the Rev. Sam Adams, a middle aged Episcopal clergyman in charge of a small but growing rural church in Maryland. At his Bishop's urging, he employs Rachel, a recent graduate of divinity school as his assistant. Rachel is a bright and personable young woman, but she brings with her memories of an earlier traumatic experience. The story develops as Sam and Rachel deal with not only their parish duties but also the return of Rachel's past to haunt her and those who have come to care for her. The author blends into this very readable story insights gained from his own experience as the son of an Episcopal minister.
Rating: Summary: A Surprising Pleasure! Review: The Vicar of Afton proves to be a thoroughly enjoyable read! With a little bit of genre mixing, Brewster manages to give us a mystery, a romance, a solid Christian fiction book and even throws in a little cross-cultural insight. Though the pace occassionally slows down, Brewster has created likable characters and an interesting story with an ending you may 'think' you suspect, but it still comes with a shock. I'm looking forward to the next book featuring the two main characters, Sam and Rachel. The ending leaves open the possibility of a continuation, so Mr. Brewster better get to it! If you're into solid reads with some mystery and a little theology thrown into the mix, you'll do well to read "The Vicar of Afton".
