Summary: lucky you! a new judith ivory yet to read!
Review: there's 17 other reviews here, so i won't take more of your time going into detail about the plot etc of "The Indiscretion. i just want to say that i *loved* it and throw my vote in with those of you who give it 5 stars.

i gotta say, though...if you're still reading through 17 different reviews to find out if you should read "The Indiscretion", you are most probably a reader who hasn't yet encountered Judith Ivory.

for if you had, it is likely that you would either just snap up the book on sight, because you would have become a rabidly ardent fan, or you wouldn't bother reading any reviews about her books, because she's not your cup of tea.

those of us who adore her books do so because she EXPECTS her readers to be intelligent and never talks down to them. which means that, sometimes, she doesn't spell everything out for you in capital letters. she expects you to do the mental gymnastics to "get it." this also means that she eschews stereotype protagonists.

i noticed someone mentions in an earlier review something like "oh, yuck, i hate books with cowboy heroes." hey!! don't write Sam off because he's a "cowboy." that's just the horse he came in on. (well..train, in this case.)

Sam isn't like any cowboy/diplomat you will have met before. i promise you!

Judy always has real seeming, complex, 3 D, living/breathing characters. by the end of the book, you will suspect that, like Gepetto's Pinocchio, Judy's characters have "become real people" and are out there living their lives.

(check out her site...judithivory.com: her literary offspring send "mom judy" mail from time to time to keep her apprised of their lives "after the book ends." isn't that considerate of her characters? don't we wish OUR non-literary kids would do the same, hm?

anyway, gf's, i hope you love the book! you lucky fish. i wish *i* had the pleasure of anticipating and devouring a fresh, never-read judith ivory book.

Summary: adequate
Review: This book can only be described as an less than adequate replacement for brillantly written romances. The storyline is somewhat original but outlandish and unrealistic. The featured couple definately has chemistry, but it is all expressed distastefully. This book is the epitome of a trashy romance novel. The daughter of a viscount and a champion archer? American cowboy and politician? This book is farfetched but pretty easy to follow. A good book to laugh at (not with) on a rainy day.

Summary: A Must Read
Review: This is a book that when you look up from reading it you realise that you are smiling. Everytime I came back to the real world I was smiling unless I had to put the book down then I was frowning.

Sam and Liddy are two characters that I liked. Now that may sound like an understatement but it's not. How many times do you actually read a book and like the characters? And what's more, they liked each other. They argued like crazy and both had faults but they LIKED each other warts and all. Sam was just awesome, he was a heroic type of person who never thinks good of himself. He can rescue women left and right yet he has a low self image (okay, I more than liked Sam). And Libby is a strong woman but she doesn't realise it .

Her family is wonderful. Parents in this type of situation are usually portrayed so differently. I was pleasantly suprised by her parents (and brother).

There is a scene that I don't recall ever in a book on page 59/60 (I think? doing this from memory) that was so laugh out loud funny that I read over the phone to my best friend.

This book is such an enjoyable read that I found I was reading slower at the end because I din't want their story to end. There are so many reasons why this book is so good. I just mentioned a few. Please buy The Indiscretion. Thank you Judith Ivory

Summary: Guffaws of Laughter, but Uneven Momenum
Review: Upper-class Lady Lydia Bedford-Browne decides to masquerade as a woman in service so she can enjoy a few days of unescorted freedom away from her overprotective family and companion. She and a Texan are the only two passengers on a stagecoach when they lose their driver and the coach crashes upon the moors. Away from the constraints of their responsibilities and the prying eyes of society, a sense of uninhibition and freedom dawns on the couple in the isolated, primitive English moors.

This book could have been titled "A Texan in England" since the hero, Sam Cody, is a gentleman-rancher transplanted in England and that is figured upon so prevalently within the book. He is full of American-West idioms and analogies. Judith Ivory keeps the cultural & class differences between Sam & Lydia constantly in the reader's mind, while showing how they are swayed by their attraction to each other and temporary freedom. Ms. Ivory sets this story up with exquisite care. The atmosphere and character's actions and emotions are described with such nuance while they are on the moors it's a pleasure to read. There are several great exchanges between Sam & Lydia. Many times I just guffawed at their rejoinders and delighted in the differences that kept them at odds.

However, I thought it was just pure romance-novel silliness when at a particular moment Lydia, a sheltered virgin, literally grabbed onto Sam. That scene could have been handled much better and was just a throw-the-book-against-the-wall moment. But the book, after that transgression, returned to its previous tone. Unfortunately, the momentum fades upon Sam & Lydia's return to civiliation, mostly because they don't share enough scenes together. But at this point, Ms. Ivory's unflinching look at the classism of English nobility is refreshing, when so many other romances sugercoat or romanticize it.

There are many fine points to recommend this novel: the nuanced writing in the first half, the protagonists' chemistry, and the comic dialogue. This romance is worth reading. The writing, dialogue, and certain elements of the plot are unique and engrossing. The tenor and momentum of the plot is just not consistent.

Summary: English lady meets Texas cowboy.
Review: When Lady Lydia Bedford-Browne set out on a adventure in Texas, she didn't think it would be the adventure of her life. The straight-laced English woman proved she could take a chance on her life, but she couldn't take a chance on love. Sam Cody was the only other passenger on her coach when it ran into a terrible accident. Though they had been stranded, the two decided to do something about it--but what could they do in the middle of nowhere? The contrasts here between Texas man and English woman are very striking here, but the characterizations go no further than that. Sexual tension, though well-written, seems to take over the story and to cheapen the relationship these characters could have had. The adventure, however, is interesting and can satisfy a reader's curiosity.
