Rating: Summary: Forgettable Fluff Review: If you want a fast read with no exertion of brain power read "Sex and the Single Sister". Don't get me wrong the book served its purpose to entertain but it was missing depth. The characters were shallow and clueless in their pursuit of happiness. However, unfortunately most woman are guilty of such behavior. All in all, it was a readable novel to help pass the time away. However, this is not a novel to make and impact on your ideas or thoughts. You will forget you read this novel in a week.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Reading but a Waste of Time and Money Review: It took me more than two weeks to read this book because it seemed so juvenile and simplistic. I was truly disappointed in the character development. The author made her characters seem like they were complete nymphomaniacs, and they were definitely lacking depth. These were supposedly all college-educated women making all the wrong moves. There also seemed to be confusion between the present and the past tenses. I actually thought that some of the text was well-written and entertaining, but I found myself getting disgusted at Maryann Reid for writing such drivel...but let's be real, sex sells. However, some of it was just plain silly. Some of the editing (or lack thereof) was glaring as well ("I guess it's fair to say Mike like's people watching him."). And there are many other examples in the book. Some of the plots were downright assinine and I wish I had checked it out from the library instead of wasting my hard-earned money. I don't know if I will read anything again written by this author unless she adds some more depth to her characters and stop making them look like cheap floozies with no moral compasses. One character said that dating married men was totally out of her realm; another said she would never have gone to bed with a guy after knowing him for just a week. I'm not convinced. If this becomes a bestseller, I would definitely be surprised. Hats off to Ms. Reid, though. She published a book, in spite of the fact that it is not worth the paper it is printed on. It's just too far out there for my tastes.
Rating: Summary: Explosive debut artist Review: MaryAnn Reid's book is a very good answer to Sex and the City! I have been waiting for a good book like this to be created for a very long time. And I must say that I am very impressed with what I read!
Rating: Summary: Sisters You Definitely Want to Check Out! Review: Maryann Reid's first novel, "Sex & The Single Sister" (STSS) has been compared to Candace Bushnell's bestseller, "Sex & The City." Just about every group I belong to has brought the title up in some setting, and as a single sister, I knew I had to read Ms. Reid's book to see if I could find just a little bit of myself within the pages.STSS is a compilation of five short stories about five single and upwardly mobile sisters and their experiences with men, dating, and sex. STSS brings us: --FARAH, a 24-year-old sister from Brooklyn, who considers herself a free spirit, who is looking, but enjoying while she looks. She finds herself catching feelings in a situation that involves a man who is already "committed". --ALAYA, a 26-year-old from San Francisco whose major asset is her voluptuous body. She has problems with letting men in, and when she finds someone she could learn to love, she questions herself...and him. --KENYA, a 29-year-old from Miami is suffering from the "can't find a man" blues. She meets a sexy Hispanic man and falls into a relationship with him...but all ain't perfect, when she begins to wonder what else is out there, and find herself checking out other prospects. --ALEXIS, a 25-year-old from Atlanta who has just gotten out of a long relationship and has the urge to explore her "other" side. --WACEERA, a 23-year-old from Chicago is attached, but is still checking out the scene looking for the best man. Reid's style is very light and entertaining. She gives the reader five distinct scenarios that I'm sure women (black and white and others) may have found themselves in...even though they might deny it! The stories are fast-paced as you get caught up in the characters' dramas of career and men. Reid has a way of bringing the reader directly into the scenes of each story, and I found myself shaking me head, laughing or cussing out the girls for their antics. One thing I will say, the word SEX in the title ain't just there for show! This book gets down sexually speaking and delivers some wickedly sexual scenes...but all done within the context of the stories...not just for the purpose of having sex in a story. I think all women, especially those who have lived through the decade of the 20s or who are living it now, will find something entertaining and fun to read with Sex & The Single Sister.

Rating: Summary: A Brother's Take Review: Now, let's see, a man reading a very colorful book titled Sex and the Single Sister on the train? Hmmm....It gets some looks, especially from curious women. And on top of that reason, I just absolutely loved the book (the sex scenes were scalding hot). I believe I must have dated those girls in the book in the past! I went through all that (okay, some) stuff with women. It took me 3 days to finish. The author was hard on women. She gave brothers a chance to breathe! My favorite character was Alaya. That is a unique lady, and I was a Keith in someone else's life. I recommend this book to men and women all over. It's popping!
Rating: Summary: Good Read Review: One thing about these ladies. They have no qualms about getting their grooves on and who don't care either. But they weren't buck wild to the point of no return either. A lot of them learned some valuable lessons(like Alaya from S.F.), and some just want to have fun. At some point, you just want to fan yourself from the scenes here. It wasn't raunchy, but well written. Alright.
Rating: Summary: The sex.... Review: Scenes are very revealing, to say the least. LOL. It's like that language in HBO's Sex and the City--with all the "f" and "s" and "p" and "d" words to define the sex act and genitalia. You know how those women on that show can be downright upfront! That's how the book is, too. It's written for that generation that is up and coming now in the 20s and 30s. A group that have very crazy, fast paced city lifestyles and are materialistic. But the girls are all employed professionally in the computer, journalism, and entrepreneur fields. I'd tell anyone to pick it up if they just want an escape from life's humdrums or just something juicy to read on your next trip!
Rating: Summary: Light & Entertaining Read! Review: Sex and The Single Sister by Maryann Reid is a debut novel composed of five novellas. Reid gives us an intimate peek into the lives of five very successful African American women in their twenties. Farah, Alaya, Kenya, Alexis and Waceera, just don't want any man. They are black princesses and want their prince. Unfortunately, they're all currently singing the blues. Farah is caught up with somebody else's catch; Alaya is carefully treading the dating waters to find Mr. Right; Kenya is nearing 30 with the "can't find a husband" blues; Alexis is just out of a long relationship and looking to explore her "other" side; and Waceera is attached but still out looking for the best man. These ladies, thought they live in different cities, travel in elite social circles and have great careers...have empty personal lives. Yes they're hanging out in the club, the lounge, the bar, the networking event or the comedy show but they're still coming up empty handed in finding their prince. They're either out of a bad relationship, still in a new one, looking for a husband, or exploring their sexuality but they haven't achieved their ultimate degree...M.R.S. Their stories are witty and provocative and funny tell-alls about the dating scene and making all the wrong moves. Women of all age groups and races can relate to the troubles these girls go through in trying to find the right man.
Rating: Summary: Between the Sheets Bookclub, FL Review: Sex and the Single Sister is a collection of short stories. There is a different girl, in a different city for each story. I truly enjoyed the tone of this book. It was funny, and thought provoking. Lines like, 'men are in control of relationships because we wait for them to call, for them ask us out, and if all goes well, wait for the wedding ring.' More or less verbatim. But it makes you go, 'Hmmm.' Also issues like dating outside of one's race are touched on. I say 'touched on' because this book is not a testament to black relationships or a self help book. While reading and noticing my reaction to the sex scenes, I also noticed that it is true that some black women have a problem reading about themselves discussing sex so candidly. But behind close doors some of us do! With no holds barred as the women in the book. I also had a problem seeing how professional black women can be so naive. But that happens to. Sex and the Single Sister shows women being vulnerable, making mistakes. Please keep in mind that the characters in the book are all very young, so it may explain their choices. This book caused alot of emotion and outburts in my bookclub. We kept it fun because that is the nature of the book. Fun. Easygoing. Realistic (Ooouch!)
