The chareacters are engaging, the action is fast-paced, and the romance is steamy!Ms. Renken's attention to detail is wonderful, and the reader is transported back in time. The reader can almost smell the salt air. Bottom line?? This book is just plain fun to read. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Myshelf.Com Reviewer Review: Laura Renken's My Lord Pirate is a truly an award winning novel. Fast moving and full of twists and turns, it will leave you turning the pages and staying on edge right until the very end. Talon Drake is a man determined to seek vengeance against the Welles family who falsely accused his family of treason. He seeks revenge in plotting to abduct Arabella, the bride of William Welles stepson Harrison Kendrick. However when his crew mistakenly kidnaps the wrong woman and takes Regan Welles, Arabella's cousin and Harrison's stepsister, the adventure begins. Reagan is horrified to learn her abductor is none other than Talon Drake, the man she believes had her parents killed. During her captivity Reagan leans the real truth about what happened and discovers a treasure in Talen's heart o f gold. MY LORD PIRATE will quickly absorb the reader into the story. They will discover two characters who have suffered not only physical but mental hardships throughout their lives. Talon and Regan are very deserving of the magic that love can offer them. I found myself hating to see the end of the these wonderfully memorable characters in this enchanting novel.
Rating: Summary: Historical romance lovers are in for a treat! Review: MY LORD PIRATE is non-stop action and heart-wrenching emotion from cover to cover. Talon is a complex character, justified in his desires to right the wrongs done to him and his family, he's strong and determined where necessary, yet compassionate--a character deserving of the title 'hero'. Poor Regan is a loving, caring, very passionate woman torn between her desire and love for a man completely justified in his hatred for her family, and her need to protect what remains of her own family. This deadly feud between the Drakes and Welles makes for a spell-binding Romeo and Juliet on the High Seas.
Rating: Summary: MY LORD PIRATE sizzles Review: MY LORD PIRATE, the debut novel from Laura Renken, is an absolutely fabulous, nail biting, edge- of -your- seat, heavy sigh historical romance. I suggest you clear an entire day on your calendar for this one, dear readers, because I did not want to put it down! MY LORD PIRATE is filled with swashbuckling adventure, evil villains, an alpha male hero who will leave you breathless, a wonderful identifiable heroine, and some of the greatest love scenes out there.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a return to pirates the way they're supposed to be! Review: Talon Drake is the Dark Lord of the seas. Driven by a voracious hunger for revenge against the English monarchy that abandoned him to a corrupt magistrate, and the Spanish crown that ruthlessly enslaved him, his appetite for justice forbids him compassion, especially for the pampered daughter of a hated enemy. An enemy who made him what he was--a man whose ill-famed reputation even among the Brethren of Tortuga is deserved. Now vengeance and his murdered father's legacy collide to bring history full circle. The Welles family stole Talon's lands and title, and had him imprisoned, all for the golden promise of treasure. His life has been sworn back to him if he gets Arabella Welles away from the governor of Jamaica, a man who will stop at nothing, not even murder, to gain the lost treasure of Puerto Bello. Arabella Welles' father, once part of the conspiracy against Talon's family, possesses evidence Talon must have to prove his family's innocence in the alleged crimes of treason that condemned him to the gallows ten years before. He must spirit Arabella away from the governor and recover his father's treasure. This is the story of what happens when he steals the wrong woman. And what a story it is. Wow!
Rating: Summary: A good start to (but not the best of) the trilogy Review: Talon Drake should be living comfortably as the Earl of Sunderland but the treachery of the Welles family has instead destroyed his life. His father hanged unjustly, his mother and sister brutally murdered and his family name disgraced leaving himself and his younger brother Marcus outlaws. They turn to a life of piracy to survive and seek revenge against the Welleses and the thoroughly despicable Harrison Kendrick. Regan Welles is Harrison Kendrick's half sister. After a childhood accident leaves Regan with a badly broken leg that never healed properly resulting in a limp, she is sent to live in a convent on Martinique where her mother's brother is a priest. She is brought to Jamaica for the wedding of her cousin Arabella Welles to Kendrick. Meanwhile, Talon Drake is planning to abduct Arabella to use her to get a pardon from Kendrick. Predictably, he abducts the wrong woman - Regan. Poor Talon! She makes his life a living hell from the moment she enters it. And herein lies my biggest problem with this story. Regan is the type of heroine that I find particularly tedious. While you can admire her courage and loyalty, she is also pathetically clinging to an idea of her family (particularly her half brother) that is a far cry from reality. I think my childish ideals would have been smashed once I realized that my "dear" half brother had been, unbeknownst to me, slowly addicting me to opium! There were so many times when she should have had her wake-up call but chose not to believe. After about the fifth or sixth failed attempt to thwart Talon I got tired of her. And when someone close to Talon is killed because of her, I about wrote her off and wanted Talon to as well. But she FINALLY sees the truth (almost too late) and redeems herself in the end. MLP is the first in the trilogy followed by Night Shadow (which I'm reading now) and ending with my favourite Renken book "Heart of the Condor" (best of the series - I just adore it!). While I was exasperated by Regan, I loved Talon and the story is well developed and action-packed. I recommend My Lord Pirate as a good start to an interesting trilogy.
Rating: Summary: The hero was worth the 3 stars!! Review: Talon Drake, the Fourth Earl of Sunderland, turns to a life of piracy after his life is destroyed. He is accused of treason, losing his family name and honor. With his father and mother brutally murdered so begins Talon's quest for revenge and redemption. He devices an elaborate plot to strike out at his greatest foe. He sets out to kidnap Harrison Kendrick's intended. Unknowingly, he kidnaps the wrong woman. Regan Welles is found in her cousin's bedroom causing Talon to believe that she is Harrison's intended. She is not. She is his half sister. This, of course, he doesn't realize until much later on. The story was very good up until this point. The interaction between Talon and Regan crackled with attraction and a good amount of chemistry. As the story moved on, Regan's defiance and rebellion over her kidnapping grew tedious. I might get a lot of criticism over this review but for me, Regan quickly became tiresome. Incredibly, Talon's love for her never wavered. The rating above is solely for Talon. He was the epitome of a pirate. Ruthless, dangerous and menacing. For the life of me, I couldn't quite figure out why he was so attracted to Regan especially when she repeatedly tried to harm him?? Her constant betrayals disgusted me and changed a potentially excellant novel into an OK one. Talon would have been better off feeding Regan to the fishes!
Rating: Summary: great read! Review: The best pirate romance I have read in over a decade! Absolute perfection. Could not put it down. Laura Renken has restored my faith in romance witers. The only thing bad about this book is that it ends.
Rating: Summary: Grand Sexy Adventure Review: This book has it all, a great romance and a grand adventure. The hero is dark, brooding, and sexy as all get out. The heroine is independent, fiesty, and loyal to her family above her own wants and needs. She is not another bubble head who falls in love and forgets every other part of her life. It is obvious this book has been well researched. It's worth reading just to learn about the pirates of the Caribbean and their wonderful ships. The writing is smooth, polished, and seamless. This is the perfect book to bring to the pool or beach.
Rating: Summary: Book #1 Of An Epic Tale Of Romance And Revenge Review: This is book #1 of an epic trilogy, a historical romance featuring three warring families: The Drakes, the Espinosas, and the Kendrick-Welles. Set in the Caribbean in the 15th century, it is a tale of extreme betrayal, the lust for brutal revenge and hidden treasure, the quest for lost honor, and the hope of new love. "My Lord Pirate" is Talon Drake's story. He is an almost perfect hero. Not only is he unbelievably handsome, courageous, intelligent, brave, sexy and charming...but he has a strong and ethical code of honor. Talon was born of a noble English family on their large island plantation in the Caribbean. The entire family, except Talon and his brother Marcus, was tortured and brutally murdered through a friend's greed and betrayal. The politics of the time - the sea rivalry between the English and the Spanish, and the treasures of the Spanish Main, helped to further destroy the fortunes of the Drake brothers. They both take to piracy in order to survive. Revenge to those who brought them down, and clearing their family name of treason charges keeps them alive through terrible hardships. Talon attempts to kidnap his enemy's, (Harrison Kendrick), fiancee and winds up with the wrong woman. Regan is as wonderful a heroine as Talon is a hero. She is beautiful, smart, courageous and very non-traditional. Together, the two of them make sparks fly. My major critique of this novel is that Ms. Renkin, in order to maintain tension between Talon and Regan, settles on the hackneyed solution of overdoing the "love-hate" relationship. There is certainly enough justification for perhaps 50% of the, "I love you in the evenings and I hate you in the mornings" between the two of them. There is much shared familial baggage that gets in the way of love and friendship. But the back and forth bickering, especially by Regan, who changes her feelings every 8 hours, comes across, (oddly enough), as the author's weakness rather than Regan's. Ms. Renkin's success in building such a strong female figure is also her downfall. When Regan uncharacteristically continues, ad nauseum, to protest too much - her whining and turn-coat behavior is not believable. I am then, as a reader, torn from the story and forced to think, "Bad writing!" What a disruption! Anyway, we are treated to rough storms at sea, of both the natural and emotional kinds. Regan's cousin Arabella and clan are also captured, crowding the ship with a varied and very entertaining cast of characters. Plots and counter-plots succeed and are also thwarted. And slowly, some of the pieces of the puzzle emerge that show us the broader picture of over 2 generations of the intertwining histories of the families. Of the two Renkin books that I have read so far, this one and its sequel, "Night Shadow," I prefer the latter. Each book stands on its own, but I strongly suggest that you read this one first. It is a good book and a good read. I have a feeling that the last two books are the strength of the trilogy and look forward to beginning "The Heart Of The Condor."
