Rating: Summary: ANOTHER PAGE TURNER BY GLORIA MALLETTE Review: Although the story was not inspired by some true life event. Arnells story with her mother is not something that's unheard of.
This story was a perfect example of the power of mind control. As I was reading, I kept thinking of what I would do if I were to find myself in Arnell's situation. At times I thought she really loved her mother but as I read further, I realized what appeared as love was actually insecurity, being that she had no one else to turn to but the very person who hurt her and made her life miserable.
When it comes to Gloria there's never a disappointment. But this Honey Well, I'd have to admit was the best I've read, so far.
Rating: Summary: SECRETS REVEALED Review: At the age of 16 life for a young girl should be spent shopping and talking on the phone about boys, but not for Arnell. Now that she is a grown woman she still harbors secrets of her pass. At an early age she was forced into the lifestyle of prostitution by her own evil mother Queen Esther. Using her daughter to help her pay the rent became her way out of poverty not only did she use her own child but any young girl she could manipulate. Arnell is engaged to be married but with this secret she's afraid that her evil mother will tell her fiance what really goes on in that house.
Arnells' past is haunting her but what she will found out is that Queen Esther has some skeletons in her own closet as well. Who will tell the truth and who will get caught up? This is one book that will kept you reading I know I did. Great book!!
After I finished this book I asked myself what kind of mother would sell their own child to get rich? Even though this book is not based on factual events you better believe that there is someone out there who has gone through something similar.

Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK IS TO HOT TO HANDLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: Caution when reading this book be sure to wear gloves because it is to hot to handle. Gloria malliette has done it again. Once again she wrote a book that captivate your attention from the moment you read the first word. She wrote the story so vivid that at times i had to remind myself that this was just a book. I was so angry with Queen ester that at times i just wanted to wring her neck myself. Queen ester was out to destroy her daughter arnell's life she did any and everything she could to con arnell into doing whatever she wanted her to do. The things that she did to her daughter arnell i wouldn't even do to my worst enemy. Esther had a heart of ice nothing mattered to her but the almighty dollar and she would do anything to get it even if it meant harming her own daughter. This book causes us to face the harsh reality that things like this actually happens in real life. Also it proves the saying what goes around comes around to be true because esther definetly got what she had coming to her. If you have not read this book yet you do not know what you are missing GO OUT AND GET THIS BOOK I GUANRANTEE YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED
Rating: Summary: Great from cover to cover Review: From the moment I started reading this book I was enthralled. I love that Mrs. Mallette writes about real issues, and child prostitution is a real issue, and the consequences of the decisions people make. Queen Esther was no honey of a mother, and her daughter, Arnell, suffered from a weak backbone, but that was to be expected when she had a evil, conniving, and controlling mother who prostituted her from the age of 16. Queen Esther could not have been my mother, but I know that there are real mothers like Queen Esther in the real world. My girlfriend said that if she had been Arnell that she would have long ago escaped her mother's clutches, but Arnell had been with her mother alone since the age of three, and everyone isn't strong enough to fight off the one they love, especially if it is one's mother. If I had not heard the true story of Kenneth Kimes, a 30 something year old man who did everything his mother told him to do including seduce women and kill people, I might have had a problem with Arnell, but poor self esteem will often tie a person to an abusive marriage and a controlling parent. By the end of the book, Arnell broke her mother's hold over her, whereas Kenneth Kimes never did. He's in jail. I loved the Honey Well. As well, I loved Shades of Jade, Promises to Keep, and Weeping Willows Dance. Mrs. Mallette writes books that are quite different from the type of books put out by most black authors today. I can't wait for Distant Lover. Kudos to you, Mrs. Mallette, for the fine array of your titles that grace my book shelves.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT, DRAMA-FILLED...LOVED IT! Review: I read Gloria Mallette's last book, Shades of Jade and it was off the chain and The Honey Well was also. This one started off with drama and ended with EXTRA Drama! This book was so good and different from anything I have ever read. Towards the end grab a box of tissue because the tears will flow. Reading this book, I kept asking myself how could a mother be so evil and selfish when it came to her OWN daughter. At the age of sixteen Arnell was asked by her MOTHER to sleep with the landlord because she could not afford to pay the rent. This book will have you turning the pages so fast.... Get it today! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Rating: Summary: A Real Good Page Turner Review: SYRACUSE, NEW YORK
"The Honeywell" was one of my faves of the year. I loved it. You can't be bored by this plus the writing is absolutely engaging, sad and furious all at the same time.
A lot of books are boring, but this is not one of them.
Rating: Summary: Sex, lies, and blackmail Review: The Honey Well is the nickname for a brothel. The two main chararacters, Arnell and Esther, both have secrets that they don't want getting out. Arnell's secret may stop her from marrying her fiance and Esther (Arnell's mother) is using Arnell's secret to control Arnell plus she has some secrets of her own that could cost her to lose Arnell forever. The struggle for control between the two alone is enough hold your attention. Throw in sex and blackmail you won't be able to put the book down. This is a very good read.
Rating: Summary: Well written story that keeps you interested..... Review: The Honey Well was a novel that I enjoyed from beginning to end, and while some reviewers did not enjoy this story, (it is somewhat along the current negative books you read these days), because it is so well written it keeps you captivated. You feel for Arnell, but wonder why she keeps letting her mother, Esther, completely dominiate and humiliate her. Esther, the mother is a complex characther...classy yet vulgar, sweet yet sinister, you are captivated as to why and how she became the woman she is. Unfortunately the ending is a bit dull and the explanation of how Esther's deciving ways came to be is never really explained completely. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this book and will try to find more by this author.
Rating: Summary: Strange Kind of Love Review: The Honey Well was a one day read, You can't put it down. I found myself turning pages to see how Queen Esther was going to continue to pimp her daughter Arnell. All in the name of love.A excellent novel and the ending was unpredictable. A great book club selection. The story line will make you laugh, cry and so angry. I read Shades of Jade enjoyed it very much, but The Honey Well is the best I've read this year.
Rating: Summary: Refreshing Review: The Honey Well was an unexpected treat. The story of a heartless mother, Queen Esther, who prostitutes her own daugther, Arnell, for the sake of the almighty dollar, is well-written and filled with unexpected twists, turns, and exceptional dialogue. Although there is a queen in this honey well, this book is no fairy tale. The Honey Well takes a serious look at the responsibilities a mother, a parent has in raising her child and how at times, it is better to be a motherless child. The Honey Well is far from the usual, "he done me wrong," "dope dealing," "street life," "sex till she drop" novels written by so many AA authors these days. The Honey Well is not sweet and at times stings like a bee (Queen bee that is). There is nothing predictable about this book. The author did a great job in not only writing this book, but in putting the issue of child prostitution on the table. I've told all my friends, and now I'm telling anyone who reads this review: READ THIS BOOK. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. You will be talking about this book, long after the last page is read.
