Rating: Summary: Great interaction between the characters Review: I know this is fiction, but is the author expressing himself through the male characters or was he portraying African American males in general? I am talking about the reference to skin color - I bristled everytime light or dark skin was mentioned. I can understand when introducing Christie to the story; it made a difference that she was white, but does the different shades of black people (especially women) matter? Are African American males also caught up in hair texture as well (page 219)? Not important to the story either, was the make of the cars that each male character drove. No doubt about it - the story was GOOD! But how does skin color and cars affect relationships?
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Story That's Easy To Read Review: I had heard so much about "Men Cry In The Dark" that I finally was compelled to pick up a copy and I'm glad I did. Michael Baisden did a fine job writing the story of four friends dealing with various issues in their lives; meeting the right woman, dealing with the crazy ex-girlfriend, dating woes, and interracial relationships. I liked the character Derrick the most. He seemed very human-like, down-to-earth, a little bit on the egotistical side, but still a regular guy at times. The story does pull you in and leaves you wanting to read more of Baisden's works.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I really enjoyed this book. It's great to read a book with four positive African American men trying to do the right thing.
Rating: Summary: Interesting! Review: Men Cry In The Dark is a great book. I guess it is safe to say that it is the male version of Waiting To Exhale. I was really into this book, because when I started reading it, I did not want to put it down. Several places in the book were so funny. I laughed so hard tears were flowing. The book is about the relationships of four best friends, Derrick, Tony, Ben, and Mark. All of whom, despite their humble beginnings, became successful business men. They all had a great sense of family and frienship that I applaud. Men Cry In The Dark gave us insight to issues in which men are faced with such as interracial dating, single parenthood, and the JOB. Without giving information about this character, my hat goes off to Angela, Ms. Westside. She stood firm in what she believed. Read the book to see if you agree with that!
Rating: Summary: entertaing male perspective of relationships Review: Michael Baisden did an excellent job of sharing a males perspective concerning the trials and tribulations of relationships; Men Cry in the Dark was entertaining, interesting, insightful, and filled with unexpected twists and turns. Angela, you go girl, your character is truly an inspiration on how to deal with those men who choose to do wrong by you. Lastly, thanks Mr. Baisden for avoiding a predictible ending.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: That was the most fascinating book that I had read in a long time. I was more than intrigued with the characters and found myself reading at such a fast pace that it was becoming a soap opera in my head. I believe it has the making of a made-for TV movie. Thanks for the insight into personality makeup of people. Question: Sequel 2, will Angela and Derrick get back together? How is the cast doing now?
Rating: Summary: Negative Portrayal of Black Women Review: This book had a great storyline, but the style drove me absolutely crazy! It started out in first person with Derrick, but then ended up in third in the same chapter. I was getting so confused about who was actually doing the story telling. Another thing I did not like about this book was the negative portrayal of Black women. Ben's reaction to Nikki was just totally ridiculous! I mean, I'm not trying to condone what Nikki did, but there are men who have done way worse things to women and were forgiven! And also, if Ben were using a condom in the first place, he wouldn't have gotten stuck with VD! And Mark, his reasons, for dating white women were totally preposterous; just because of what happened in high school? And every now and then, he would stereotype Black women by saying, "You know how Black women can be!" Tony was cool, but he should have kept his baby's mother in check. I'm glad he ended up marrying a real woman like Tracie. Derrick, I did not like at all. He was a conceited, narrow-minded jerk and he deserved to lose Angela! He got on my nerves with his selfish needs and everytime he mentioned how pretty a woman was, he had to mention that she was lighskinned or had light eyes. As if that makes a woman prettier! And then, at the end, in reference to Ben's new woman, he mentioned that she was nice, a little on the hefty side, but nice. What does this have to do with her personality? That's the problem: Black men, put too much emphasis on looks! I just wish Mr. Baisden would please take a hard look at this book and realize how insulting it is to Black women.
Rating: Summary: "Men cry in the dark", was exciting and I loved it! Review: Michael, Your book was and is very good. I am also Ms. Westside and I can really relate to Angela. I also enjoyed meeting you at our spirited sister of color expo in columbus, ohio. I read Never Satisfied and enjoyed that book also. I was so impressed with you until, I had to get your autograph twice. Keep up the good work and keep the books coming. I hope to see you again in columbus. Take care and keep up the good work again!
Rating: Summary: I think the book was very entertaining. I enjoyed it! Review: The book gave an insight to some issues with which men deal. I was touched by some parts and angered by others. A book that appeals to many different emotions is worth reading. If nothing more, it makes you think.
Rating: Summary: Help me to Understand Review: People in general don't need a college degree to be labled as educated. I know a lot of people with college degree's thats dum as hell. I was tired of hearing the characters in the book refer to woman, that didn't attend college as "uneducated". The old saying is "Education is the key to Success, but I think a Education is very important but not the key to success". (but helpful in some cases) Besides my obvious complaint, the book is great!!!
