Rating: Summary: Blech! Review: I don't know where to begin...which is probably a problem that Mr. Baisden had when he wrote this mess. By the way, Mr. Baisden, I am an "uneducated" black woman with less than $1000 in the bank! Oh, and I am also not a petite little size 5 or 10, either. So, I guess according to the standards that your characters had, I'm not worth a sophisticated, educated black man's time; right? There were so many things that I took issue with in this book that it would take hours to name them...so I won't go there. I will say that if this is really how the majority of black men think about black women, then we as people are doomed. I mean, these guys were so full of themselves; and the main character seems to be the type of brothah that would drive a woman to another woman! This was my first time reading this author (I was on a road trip from Portland to Oklahoma; it was my only option) and it will probably be my last. These men-and a couple of the women-were so shallow and narrow minded. There was so much talk about being college-educated, owning your own business, and light skin with "good" hair, everyone came across as elitist buffoons! Gee, Mr. B, thanks for uplifting the race...(In case you don't recognize it, that's sarcasm). I don't know if this book expressed the author's personal point of view or if-like other readers suggested-he was just trying to get back at Terry McMillan for dissing brothahs in Waiting to Exhale. Either way, my opinion still stands...BLECH! I am very reluctant to try another one of the author's works.
Rating: Summary: A REFRESHING CHANGE FROM MOST AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE Review: I THOUGHT THAT THIS BOOK WAS A MUCH NEEDED CHANGE FROM THE SOME OF THE CURRENT AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE. A LOT OF BLACK BOOKS HAVE BECOME A S.O.S. DIFFERENT DAY KIND OF THING FOR ME BUT NOT THIS BOOK. I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW HOW MEN REALLY FELT IN RELATIONSHIPS. I KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF BAD GUYS OUT HERE BUT THERE ARE SOME GOOD ONES AND THEY ARE RECEIVING A LOT OF FLACK BECAUSE OF THE BAD EXAMPLES THAT HAVE BEEN SET PREVIOUSLY BY IRRESPONSIBLE MEN. THIS BOOK PORTRAYED MEN WHO WERE TRYING TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES AND HAVE A GOOD WOMAN BY THEIR SIDE. IT DOES NOT COME EASY. EVERYONE HAS THEIR ISSUES AND THIS BOOK WENT ON TO PORTRAY SOME OF THE DIFFERENT SITUATIONS BLACK PEOPLE ENCOUNTER WHEN THEY BECOME ROMANTICALLY INVOLVED. I ESPECIALLY LIKED THE REALISTIC WAY THE BOOK ENDED. NOT JUST A LOT OF FLUFF. NOT EVERYONE WHO IS IN LOVE ENDS UP STAYING TOGETHER. MOST TIMES PEOPLE IN LOVE JUST CROSS PATHS WHICH IS WHAT ULTIMATELY HAPPENED IN THIS BOOK. I LIKE A SENSE OF REALISM AND THIS BOOK GAVE ME WHAT I WANTED. WOMEN HAVE BEEN HURT A LOT BUT MEN ARE HURTING AS WELL AND WOMEN NEED TO SEE HOW MEN REALLY FEEL INSIDE. WE DON'T KNOW BECAUSE MEN DON'T TALK ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL AND EXPECT US WOMEN TO GUESS. I LIKED THIS BOOK AND IT'S HIGH TIME MEN STARTED WRITING AND EXPRESSING THEIR FEELINGS SOMETIMES. IF PEOPLE WERE MORE HONEST IN RELATIONSHIPS, BLACK MEN AND WOMEN WOULD NOT HAVE SUCH A HARD TIME RELATING TO ONE ANOTHER. THANKS MICHAEL BAISDEN FOR A REALLY GREAT BOOK. MELANIE
Rating: Summary: Keep up the good work Mike from the 'skins Review: I loved this book as a young Black male I felt I could really relate to it. I know I am not the only one who feels this way, because a couple of my teammates saw me reading it and wanted to check it out when I was through; about four of them have finished it and think the book is the bomb. By the end of the season every Redskin would have read this book. The way the characters come to life is great. As I read I felt like I was watchig a "Waiting to Exhale" for men. Keep it up Mike and disregard all those haters who diss the book. When you are on top there is always someone trying to bring you down.
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC! GREAT! LOVED IT! Review: Michael you did a fantastic job writing this book. It was so real. A lot of "Sisters" can't handle the truth so they choose to attack you personally. It was refreshing to read a book about black men and their relationships as seen through their eyes and not "a women's". Mike, keep up the good work, and I cannot wait to read Maintenance Man.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: Loved this book, could not put it down, hated when the book ended. I found the characters to be very "REAL" and very interesting. As for the skin color issue, I felt that Baisden "kept it real" Unfortunately, many black men and women alike are still caught up on this color issue.Keep up the good work Michael, I will be purchasing your other books and the video.
Rating: Summary: Expected more....was disappointed. Review: Book dwelled too much on description of skin color, cars, clothing, etc. Should have worked harder on developing the characters. Although this was fiction, he could have made the characters more believable; only one that appeared real was "Ben". Maybe its just me, but I don't know too many young "Blacks" that have so much going for them at such a young age. Also, why did we need to know about Angela putting on her " rolex watch, diamond necklace, and boucheron perfum? Why all the put down on fat people and "brothers that were unattractive"? Maybe in time Mr. Basiden will become a great writer; its obvious now that all he is doing is trying to make a "buck". I guess there is nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't put others down in the process.
Rating: Summary: Garbage! Review: Someone please tell me what the purpose of this book was? I have never read so many cliche in all my life! For those of you who have the book...go thought it again and just see how many references he makes to movies and TV shows: "It was a scene right out of.....It was just like.....It was a scene just like..." I though author were suppose to be creative! Whats up with all those ridiculous high fives? Every other page someone is slapping five....it a wonder anyone has any skin left on there hands. Why was angela in the wedding when she only met the other "charaters" once?! This book way tiresome, made too many refernces to name brands and a simple waste of time. In fact the book was just plain simple. Nice try Mike....but no cigar
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! Review: I truly enjoyed this book. I tried to put it down but I was unsuccessful. Michael, you did and excellent job and the ending was great. Keep up the good work. I am hoping you will keep the readers up-to-date about the characters in the book. IT WAS A REAL SOAP OPERA!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, but not too heavy, reading Review: I appreciate this book for what the author intended it to be: a bold and honest look at contemporary relationships from a distinctly male perspective. I have read and heard quite a few comments about how the male characters described the female characters in this book. If some people want to slam the author for describing skin color, hair, build, etc., other authors, such as McMillan and Campbell, should be called to task for the same thing. Ben's relationship with Nikki proved to be the most bizarre while Derrick's relationship with Angela the most disappointing. Keep of the work, Mr. Baisden... we benefit from having this perspective available in the literary world.
Rating: Summary: Excellent & Entertaining Review: I really enjoyed this book. The author kept the characters "real" and I had a a difficult time putting the book down. It was interesting (as well as entertaining)reading from the male perspective. Keep up the good work!!!!
