Summary: Interesting... yet a bit of a dissapointment
Review: Mr. Channer is and will continue to be a great and poetic writer. Having said that, I must however express dissapointment in his latest novel. I was left with the impression that there were actually two books clashing into each other, one about African mysticism and the other about romance and betrayal. Don't misunderstand me, the two topics can definitely go hand and hand. However Mr. channer seems to have trouble blending them and they seemed to be too distinct and disjointed. It was as if he was writing two books and gave up on both of them, then tried to put them together into one book.
Mr. Channer is a gifted and lyrical writer and I will continue to look for more work from him, I just think he dropped the ball on this one.

Summary: Natty Dread Rides Again!!
Review: Beautifully written with sharp dialogue and lush geographic descriptions, this book will make you think and ask of yourself what would you do if??? And challenge your core beliefs. The author has come a long way since WAITING IN VAIN and I, loyal fan, am happy to go along on the journey to read and learn. Natty Dread Rides Again!!!!

Also recommended: Waiting in Vain-- by the same author

Summary: Soul Satisfaction in Dub
Review: Colin Channer's latest novel 'Satisfy My Soul' offers a narrative that is much more compact and intense than his auspicious debut 'Waiting in Vain'. If 'Waiting in Vain' is the result of a talented writer reshaping the typical framework of Black romance fiction then 'Satisfy My Soul' displays the improved skills of that writer beginning to chip that framework away and replace it with a more substantial and more sophisticated structure.

Carey McCullough and Frances Carey, the lovers who are Satisfy's main characters, are deeply flawed, tragic individuals whose lives seem attractive on the surface. Channer peels away that surface to reveal a story that is dark and nasty. A story that unravels like a brooding, sensual roots reggae bass line massaging a dancehall in a small rural town on the island of Jamaica where Channer locates the novel. It also reveals a narrative that is just as lyrical as Bob Marley's tenor wailing poetic words.

Nasty is really the operative word here. The relationships, the sex and the philosophical discussion that inform 'Satisfy' all have a nasty edge. A number of thought provoking themes are plaited into the basic thread of the love story. These themes lament the fact that the descendants of Africans transplanted to the Americas by slavery have not come to terms with the tragedy of the Middle Passage, have not come to grips with their curious connection to a decidedly European concept of God and religion and have an ambiguous or disconnected relationship to the African spirituality of their ancestors. These issues literally consume the characters and the story.

If Channer really is Bob Marley with a pen then 'Satisfy My Soul' maybe his 'Natty Dread'.

Review: There isn't enough stars for this book !This book was great. What a journey Colin took me through. I loved that it wasn't the normal romance, It touched on different topics like spirituality, faith, friendship and love. The book was out of this world, Just like the story. Colin, you can't write fast enough for me !! And i never expected it to end like it did. He writes with a flair of unusualness that is very much needed...

Summary: Soul Satisfying
Review: Colin, you've done it again! My soul was pulled in all directions. I was forced to examine every aspect of my sexuality and spirituality. I was rooted to my seat, however slippery. Each character has a depth incomparable to most people. Carey, Frances and Kwabena take us to places that many are afraid to tread for fear of discovering who they really are.

Satisfy My Soul should be read by all who wish to develop a deeper sense of self through introspection. It will transform the inhibited into a person of unihibited sexual and spiritual exploration. I was transformed under the mango tree.

Summary: Sheer Genius
Review: "Satisfy My Soul" is hauntingly memorable. The story wraps itself around your mind, refusing to relinquish its grip. The characters stay with you long after you've turned the last page. I never dreamed Channer could possibly get any better as a writer, but once again I'm amazed...amazed at his dexterity in his development of character, amazed at his ability to make this dream come alive so vividly. Colin Channer is definitely not a 'paint-by-numbers' kind of writer. There's no formula that he follows. So if you're looking for another 'Waiting in Vain', go read that book again. 'Satisfy My Soul' is just that...satisfying, challenging one's view of his spirituality among other things. A work of pure genius! Channer all I have to say to di I is this, "Respec', nuff nuff respec', boss!"

Summary: Cool, thought-provoking book!
Review: Mr. Channer's book is daring on three levels. One, he has dared to write a book about modern black people who are complex, going beyond prevalent "Comic View" stereotypes. Two, he reveals their thorny conflict between history, spirituality and religious choice, normally a taboo issue whose examination is long overdue. Three, he dares to have an ending that is experimental and unexpected. In addition, Mr. Channer's flair for description and local color are richly rendered. "Satisfy my Soul" was an absorbing and compelling read. Kudos!

Summary: Thought Provoking
Review: Colin Channer is one of my favorite authors. I thoroughly enjoy his poetic prose and ability to transport the reader to any place in the world with his words. The characters in this book appear to have their thing together on the surface. But Channer delves deep into the spirit, the seat of motivation, and reveals the self-doubt, envy, spiritual confusion and ultimately enlightenment. Things done in the dark come to light in this engrossing novel that expounds on the subject of slavery and African Spiritualism in the search for one's true soul mate. The ending drives home the point that satisfying one's soul is much more spiritual than physical.

Summary: Raahtid
Review: I've just finished reading this book and want to congratulate Colin Channer - it was a fantastic read. Definitely the kind of the book that you could say changed your life. I felt angry, wistful and jealous (sometimes all at once) - why can't I find a love like that.

I guess the book had to end in that way, there was absolutely no way these two perfect lovers would find a way to permanently consummate their love. Bwoy, the honest emotions and themes of spirituality, friendship, betrayal and jealousy just meshed to form the perfect tale. Wicked book. He always has 'So Much Things to Say'. Can't wait for the next one.

Summary: Whet My Appetite
Review: I seem to have read a different book than most of Channer's friends. Could it be that my copy had an incorrect cover?

Overall, I believe with Satisfy My Soul, Channer's writing and descriptive prose have greatly improved over his last two endeavors. However, he falls waaay short on a storyline that captures one's attention. He has the potential to be a great literary writer. When he evolves, perhaps he'll captivate us with something more cerebral. It did not happen with Satisfy My Soul.

I await the day.
