Summary: Satisfy My Soul
Review: Interesting...I would suggest reading it twice. The fact that it is written in the first person is quite tricky to understand but it is very clever how Colin managed to pulled it off. I liked it. Carey's (main character) first person point-of-view leaves alot to the imagination but the conversations between the characters are well laid out and in-depth so you get to meet and know them. The plot is unpredictable and to me, that is what makes it good.

Unless you can get into the mode of living Carey's life and literally being in his mind instead of just reading and expecting all the details to become unfolded for you as you go along, you might find this a challenging read. It's like being a co-creator with the author because you can guess and wonder and speculate about what's happening or what's happened between "scenes" not just with Carey but with everyone else in the book. For those with creative minds in that direction this book makes it entirely possible.

I liked it. I already said that I know, but in a nutshell it was because it's different, unpredictable and even innovative. I mean seeing that this was only Colin's second full length novel, he took a chance going out on a limb making it completely different from the first. He is obviously no Harlequin novelist.

Summary: Not Another Love Story
Review: After reading Waiting In Vain, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Satisfy My Soul. I was drawn to to Fire as I was to Carey. Yes, I believe in soulmates and so I read and waited for the story to develop between Frances and Carey but it stopped and took me into a twisted, tragic and very shocking ending.

The writing was lyrical. Colin took me to places in Jamaica where I've never been. The story makes me hope for a sequel, I just think Frances and Carey should have had their happily ever after. Maybe Colin will make it right in his next book.

Summary: Satisfaction for your Soul
Review: I've had this book for over 2 month. I've been saving it. After reading Waiting in Vain I knew what to expect from this author and he has surpassed my rather lofty expectations. Satisfy My Soul is a novel that will haunt you. It is a canvas of exotic locations and erotic interplay. It is a brilliant, eloquent book of contradictions, at times wickedly naughty then moments later warm and alluring. It characters are hopelessly flawed and later just examples of the human condition. It's mystical and worldly and then spiritual and pious.

This is all reflected in the characters Colin has created. No one can capture in written word the subtle emotional changes in human thought and behavior quite like Mr. Channer. Frances is a walking contradiction; she is a whore yet totally faithful to her man. Carey is intrigued by her a little put-off by her propensity toward bedding many men, but he finds a "dirty girl" a bit of a challenge can't pass up an opportunity to clean up after other men. Carey is a very flawed individual but spends an enormous amount of time intellectualizing and reveling in the flaws of others. Yet he does very little work on his own psyche. It is true brilliance that Colin can sell us these characters, make us care deeply, how dare we judge, are we really that different?

Colin's command of language is astounding. He uses some of the literary techniques used in poetry such as repetition and free form. In one of my favorite sections of the books Carey is on his way to France's home and he is talking to her on his phone and he says he can't remember "the order of the conversation or who said what" and then Colin lists about 30 lines of the most erotic, intriguing conversation in no particular order or structure, Amazing! I just sat there looking at it..........

Remember when Julia Roberts said she didn't want to live in a world where she had an Oscar and Denzel Washington didn't. I don't want to live in a world where Colin Channer does not make the bestsellers list.

Summary: Food for the Mind and Soul
Review: Colin Channer once again rises above the field of contemporary African American artists in that his writing reaches the depths of the soul and the inner mind. While there are many other excellent authors who produce wonderfully entertaining work, they often address all-too-common, familiar subjects and circumstances which evoke instant reactions drawn from personal or near-personal experience. With both "Waiting in Vain" and "Satisfy My Soul", the reader is challenged to explore exotic, erotic and complex situations and locales which are experienced through intense imagination.

Channer's lyrical and enchanting style demands careful and deliberate consumption. Just as nourishing foods are much more effective at satisfying the appetite than sugar-laden junk foods. The journey one takes through "Satisfy My Soul" stimulates a sense of commitment to its conclusion, rather than a quick determination that "If I were in that situation, I would have......"

The range of issues affecting the book's characters touch most of our sensibilities considering the religious, sexual, interpersonal and familial struggles they encounter. For sure, I am thankful that I am not a member of this circle. Nevertheless, the experiences detailed in the book will linger and whenever my soul needs a spark I know exactly where to go. To heighten the effect, I need only imagine it being read in the author's own voice, which has served to illuminate his writing when I have attended his personal appearances.

Summary: Complexity
Review: Satisfy My Soul was great but complex. I had to read the first 2 chapters twice to make sure I was on the right track. All in all, the writing was great with deep insights into religion by way of one's upbringing. For me it was poignant, simply because as a Jamaican myself, it brings to light my personal thoughts on my African background, albeit several generations removed. I have often wondered what my life would have been like had I pursued my lineage back to Africa.

As for friendship - you either have it and treasure it or you don't, and this book sends the arrow through the heart when it shows you that jealousy can definitely outrule friendship. This was scary, especially when it should have been sacred.

Above all, this book proved to me that one has to know and love one's self before one can really love and share with another, be it a relationship of friendship or pure unadulerated love. Be true to one's self so that you are genuine with those around you.

My biggest wish is for Colin to write faster because now that I'm hooked on his writing style (the best in a long time), I need more, more, more..... He's really good! Short stories would keep me satisfied (hint, hint...)

I've shared my feelings with other and they too are now hooked so we'll be looking out for his other great upcoming works.

Love and peace, an avid fan

Marcia

Summary: I'm So Satisfied
Review: I am proud to say that I have read all of the current works by Colin Channer. "Satisfy My Soul" is such an outstanding work. I was not sure of what to expect when I started reading "Satisfy My Soul", but I received was so much more then I could imagine.
When Colin writes I immediately feel as if I am transported to the location of his characters. His writing is so vivid and his characters, oh his characters, make a sister "want to holler and throw up both her hands". He creates a picture that makes you wnat to live the experiences and events occuring in his books.
I realize that the "creative jucies" flow freely from Colin, and because of that,I buy his books as soon as they are available, and read them immediately. These actions leave me waiting for his next publication. OH, the wait!! It sometimes seems forever. I have found myself going back to "Satisfy My soul" and re-reading parts of it just to keep the book alive in my mind.
But wait I will, until I receive an e-mail informing me of a new work and the approximate date of it's release.
I am Soooooo Satisfied, and I hope that other readers will join me in this fealing. Colin Channer is truely a gifted writer, and I believe that once you have read "Got to Be Real" (Colin Channer, E.Lynn Harris,et al), "Waiting in Vain" and of course "Satisfy My Soul", you will agree.
Keep it coming, and I will be right there waiting and OH, Sooooo Satisfied.

Summary: Wonderful All The Way
Review: Mr Channer has yet again delivered with this story of love mixed with hints of the religeous confines of the human soul. I must say that after reading his first bestseller (waiting in vain) I really didn't think he could come any better. But he has. Several times over to the satisfaction of all our souls. Thank you Mr. Channer for enriching our very lives.
