Rating: Summary: Alas, I am not the greatest writer in the world by far. Review: After reading Stephen Creagh Uys' "The Las Generation of Chainsmokers" I had to reflect a moment. "If I could," I thought. "If I could only develop this level of interpersonal style into my own writing-what wonderful books I could make." Then I quietly closed the book and walked over to my book shelf. I looked at the shelf full of dull reference books on writing and word usage. I looked at the shelf all full of dry non-fiction and how-to books, and wondered why they never taught me how to write like this. I looked at the next shelf crammed with trash novels and pulp, pop, tragic wastes of good trees. Then, and without bothering to replace the shiny, slick book jacket, I slowly slid "The Last Generation of Chainsmokers" into the shelf with the rest of my classic literature.
Rating: Summary: Disquieting Residue Review: Haunting and disturbing. Vivid, yet bleary. This tale of two walking wounded has that sneaky-behind-your-back type impact.
I secretly wanted them to be each other's saviour, with each other, and at other times--in spite of each other.
It's difficult to talk about this book without coming off as an arm chair therapist---intonating pompousity where it does not exist.
Tight, gritty, excellent portrayal of co-dependence of the '90s hepcats, filling voids in all the wrong places with all the wrong devices, but never, ever giving up hope.
Only drawback to me was over abundance of the 'thoughts in free-fall rabid word association stream of consciousness' that shot its wad by page three. Less is more.
In any event, I am looking forward to 'Slaughter and Possibility' by Mr. Uys.
Rating: Summary: smoke `em if you got ` em Review: if you`ve ever spent time running around the lower east side you`ll get a chance to go back in this gritty tale of living loving losing and learning. you get the feeling uys lived his story, and thankfully lived to tell his story. this ain`t some wannabe hardcore cat who lives and writes vicariously through others. if you`ve never hung out in the lower east side here`s your chance. uys not only has the guts to go to the edge and look down....he`s able to come back and share what he`s seen.
Rating: Summary: American Literature Has Found a New Wayward Hero Review: This book is simply brilliant. The staggering drunken episodes of New York street life has never read more true. Crane King is on one side the classic American hero in his lonesome bravado and broken hearted meanderings through the electric alleys of this very particular cosmopolis. But, Crane is also something new. He struts with the classic moves but is distinctive and original. Those words encapsulate exactly how I feel about this novel. Distinctive and original. A strong first novel. This is the kind a book I'm glad I have the first edition.
Rating: Summary: smoke `em if you got ` em Review: This guy Uys can write. Anybody who loves the grittier New York will love this book. Anyone who misses being drunk-in-love will get a rush from it. The writing is quirky and original and rivals that of Bukowski. Can't wait to see Uys's next book. Until then, Chainsmokers is proving to be highly re-readable.

Rating: Summary: I have not been able to escape from this book..... Review: This is one of those books that you read ever so slowly because you don't want it to end. If you know what it's like to be impassioned by the written word, to read something so good it actually makes your heart beat faster, to close your eyes and repeat sentences in your mind and toss words around in your brain because you don't want to turn them loose...welcome to the world of Stephen Creagh Uys. It's a rare gift..This guy is better than good and I hope he's around for a long, long time.
