Summary: Solitary Soldier
Review: Debra Webb's Colby Agency series continues in "Solitary Solider." Rachel Larson is desperate to keep her son away from his father, an assassin determined to take him and kill her. The only man she can turn to is Trevor Sloan. Sloan's wife and son were killed by the assassin called Angel. Can he open his heart to this woman and the son of his mortal enemy?"Solitary Soldier" is a story that should appeal to readers who like their romantic suspense heavy on the romance and light on the suspense. After a promising beginning, "Solitary Soldier" turns out to be a story with little action and minimal plot, where the characters do little more than sit around and wait for the villain to show up. There's no mystery because we know who the villain is and what his motives are from the start. There's little suspense because almost nothing happens in this story. He teaches her self-defense. They argue. They have sex. Except for one action sequence, this book's middle sags horribly. The story comes to a complete halt for almost forty pages where the characters do nothing but have sex, then worry about their growing feelings, then have more sex. However, readers who enjoy steamy sex scenes and good character development should find plenty to like here. We are allowed to see Sloan and Rachel fall in love and grow into their relationship. It is a very convincing romance about two people opening their hearts to one another. Too bad the romance isn't developed with the suspense. It overwhelms it. "Solitary Soldier" isn't helped by its scheduling. Once again, the Intrigue editors have scheduled very similar books back-to-back. Regular readers may find this story contains too many similarities to December's "Lassiter's Law" by Rebecca York. Fragile heroine desperate to hide a young boy from his murderous father. Tortured hero who lost it after the death of his wife and child, turned to drinking, and who has a score to settle with the boy's father. The difference is that book is action packed and has some big surprises along the way. For me the impact was lessened because I felt like I had just read this story a month ago. Webb's growing number of fans should enjoy this tale. Personally I would recommend Gayle Wilson's "The Stranger She Knew," Intrigue 513, a story about a desperate mother forced to depend on a dangerous man that manages to be emotional and romantic without losing track of the sense of danger, instead.

Review: Trevor Sloan is hurting. Big Time. Sloan used to work as a detective for the Colby Agency. Seven years ago he was assigned to hunt down an evil assassin named "Angel". Sloan studied Angel's case and tracked him for months. Unfortunately when Sloan closed in on "Angel", the evil culprit retaliated by lashing out and killing Sloan's wife and his three year old son. After that Sloan quit the agency and turned solitary soldier. He continued to hunt down the evil man but to no avail. Finally Sloan gave up and drowned his sorrows in Mexican tequilas. That is ... until Rachel Larson, a desperate mother, shows up demanding Sloan help save her and her four year old son. Her son, Josh, just happens to be the son of "Angel", the man who killed Sloan's family. But Rachel's and Josh's appearance brings up painful memories of Sloan's past. Memories he thought the tequilas had chased away. Sloan decides to help and can't be attracted to his arch enemy's woman. Yes he will help Rachel and he will use the boy to get "Angel". If "Angel" wants his son he will have to go through Sloan to get him.
Debra Webb's "Solitary Soldier" is a heartwrenching tale of an emotionally crippled man and a woman determined to save them all.
Very well written. A captivating read. A must for "Harlequin Intrigue" readers.

Summary: Another Colby Agency hit!
Review: Trevor Sloan is the biggest, baddest, most tortured hero I've read in a long time. His emotional baggage would have destroyed a lesser man--it has very nearly destroyed him. Add in one innocently-determined heroine, the son of his arch-enemy, and a truly evil villain, and Sloan is up against unbeatable odds as he agrees to track down and kill a murderer for hire called "Angel". Now, take talented author Debra Webb to pull it all together. I was in love with Sloan from the moment I met him. The tension (emotional and suspense) sizzles in your hands as you read this book. You know when the big ones fall, they fall hard, and Sloan is no exception. Though he thinks he has no heart left, Rachel Larson and her son, Josh, find their way into his, and soon his vengeful hunt for Angel becomes a desperate battle to save his new "family". You gotta read this one! Debra Webb's Colby Agency books have all been terrific, and I think this one's the best yet!
