Summary: A Good Romance with a Paranormal Twist
Review: I've just read Calder's Rose by Kate Angell. I thought it was a really good romance with a paranormal twist (fictional characters come to life temporarily).

A brief summary:
Shane McNamara is a writer of a series of western books featuring Dare Calder, a gunslinger. Devin James is a writer of a series of western books featuring Rose Coltraine, a saloon owner. Their publisher convinces them to combine the two series for the next book.

So, they are living together for six weeks in order to write the book together. Both Shane & Devin have vastly different writing habits and personalities. The trade-offs that they make with one another are very entertaining.

Also, I loved Shane's T-shirt slogans - they are hilarious.

Summary: A witty double battle of the sexes!
Review: It's always been a complaint from Writers that their characters come alive and take over their books, after meticulous plotting and planning, they leap off the pages and take over. Those books are generally the ones that end up on your keeper self. You don't have paper dolls, the writer pushed around on pages, but living, breathing people that make the reader care. Well, witty original Kate Angell has picked up that gauntlet and run with it, giving a keeper for your shelf and an engaging new voice in romance. The premise is so fresh, so sassy, and loaded with laugh out loud humor.

Mr. Macho Shane McNamara is the bestselling author of the "Texas West" series, staring his gamma rogue gunslinger Dare Calder, who loves 'em and leaves 'em. Calder is a saddle up and ride off into the sunset and never looks back cousin to Louis Lamour's Sacketts. Shane ends up with a contract for a new book - but in a marketing move by his publisher, this book is to be written by two people, merging two different series. Shane may be in over his head! He has to share the page with a romance writer!

Yessiree, Devin James is a bestselling writer of the Scarlet Garter Series - a romance series! Her lead character in the series is prim, virginal Rose Coltrane. Miss Rose is NOT to be trifled with, and that lowdown polecat Dare Calder...um...Shane McNamara is trying to have his wicked way with her, um...Rose...um, well, her, too! Over Devin's dead body! Well, maybe Devin is not ready to fight to that extreme - more like over Shane's dead body! And that is a shame, because it's such a cute body!

In short order, Devin is fighting a losing battle on two fronts. Not only does that rotten cowboy plan on parking his boots under Miss Rose's ruffled bed, Shane thinks it would take some starch out of Devin's spine, if she would loosen up and see Calder has the right of thing! This confrontation is making for a rocky partnership. Each of them has poured a lot of themselves into their characters, which spells trouble as both writers have only 6 weeks to turn out a book staring both Dare and Rose. Shane is a player who loves fun, junk food, t-shirts from every pub in the world and writes at night. Devin loves to work in the daytime, adores gourmet jellybeans and is quite determined that scoundrel Dare Calder leaves her Miss Rose in her self-contained, virginal state.

As the two fusses and fights, they find their characters have to step in and take control to see Calder's Rose written properly. With a paranormal touch, Angell quickly establishes plot-it-yourself is out the window, when your characters know best.
It's a super read, full of humor, emotions, a brilliant take on the writing process all writers face. Angell - the penname for a very successful literary agent - brings her insider knowledge on the publishing industry to lend a strong foundation to this wonderful tale. She treads the light fantastic with a grace that is amazing for a first time novel. This book will leave you with a big smile in your heart, and rushing to find Angell's next book Drive Me Crazy.

Summary: Her first book? You're kidding
Review: It's really hard to believe this is Angell's first book, so much talent, so much polish. It's a true battle of the sexes when a male and female western writer are forced to co-exist and co-produce a book in six weeks. As time is a wastin', partner, the battling duo is making no progress, so it's up to their characters/alter egos to slap iron and lasso this thing before the two headstrong writers muck it up.

This writer has a great future ahead of her. I cannot wait for more of her books.

Summary: how absolutely brilliant
Review: My wife gives me books knowing my tastes. She gave me Kate Angell's Drive Me Crazy and I think it one of the best books I have read all year. Since I enjoyed it, I was giving Calder's Rose to read.

Angell writes like an Angel. Sorry, could not resist. This is a FUNNY tale that is a true battle of the sexes waged not only between the male and female characters being forced to write as partners on a book, but with the lead characters in that book as well. Angel catches men so well. A lot of writers I see write men as they THINK they are, not with all our warts. Angel does her male leads with wit and dashing and all the warts.

Just a fun fun novel. Looking forward to more Angell books. They are simply divine!

Summary: Outstanding story!!!
Review: This story was a thrill to read. I didn't realize it was her first story. I couldn't put the book down. I so enjoy reading stories where the characters have such depth that they in fact seem like real people. All four characters were given this quality (in the story line itself and in my perception of the story as I read it). Great work and I can't wait to devel into the second book.

Summary: what a super first book!
Review: When you read this engaging, very original book, it's hard to imagine this is a first book. It's so sharp. A brilliant concept of dueling writers and dueling characters.

Between Drive Me Crazy, Angell's second book, and this one, a RIO award winner, too! I am a dyed in the wool Angell fan. Faster!! I really love this witty books!
