Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Odd and dark but interesting
Review: A Desperate Game is an engrossing read, but Reave is often emotionally cruel to Tessa. She wows the staff immediately but there's no reason given. She is also sometimes cruel back to Reave.

The mystery is interesting, as is the historical ambiance, but the emotional abuse lowers it drastically in my book.

Unfortunately, it's been a while since I read the book, so I'm giving it an average 3 stars.

Summary: Romance and Mystery
Review: I just finished reading A Desperate Game. It moved me so much I wanted to urge others to buy this book. Ms. Pierce's writing style is very engaging, and I was immediately pulled into the story. The romance is intertwined with a strong suspense element, but this wasn't a turn off for me. I happen to like a good mystery as long as the hero gets his lady. I can promise you, Ms. Pierce delivers. You won't be disappointed!

Summary: Hot & Poignant Love Story -- Diabolical Murder Mystery...
Review: Impeccably researched. Barbara Pierce brings the tension and verve of a psychological thriller to her beautifully rendered Regency setting, with historically consistent characters that will stay with you long after the story's done. The hero is tender and strong, and the heroine especially will haunt you. A gifted new voice of unusual power.

Summary: Excellent romance and mystery
Review: It is a very interesting book and it is one after I started it I did not want to put it down ..Tessa kept getting involved with Reave and with her living a lie it keeps you wondering how she will get her life corrected

Summary: Too choppy for me
Review: My biggest problem when reading Barbara Pierce's A Desperate Game was the lack of development of the characters! Throughout the storyline they wind up behaving differently, but there's no actual development. It's just too incomplete to be believable for true personalities. At first it was just sort of confusing, but then became grating to not be allowed to see their growth. I'd suggest spending time with a different book.

Summary: Exciting Debut
Review: Reave Alden spends the first half of the story being boorish and rude. I had trouble getting past this especially when he didn't improve much. He just went on to arrogant and demanding. Tessa swung from pale and weak, to snapping shrew. How she thought she could marry an Earl and not be recognized, I don't understand. All in all, neither character was very engaging. The story was flat and meandering. The most interesting aspect was the character of Lord Kim Farrell. At least he had some personality. He was also more of a hero than Reave, by helping Tessa when he could have taken advantage of her.

As a whole, the book is "fair". The mystery is at least interesting almost to the very end. Likeable but forgettable.

Summary: Exceptional debut
Review: This is a lovely book, a strong love story combined with a tad of intrigue. An exceptional debut book and I'll be watching with great anticipation for more books by Barbara Pierce.

Summary: Wouldn't have missed it for anything!
Review: This is definitely a book worth reading! When I had initially bought this book, I meant to complete reading it within a day or two as I usually do with romance novels. In the end, I found myself reading it over and over again. I think I must have read it at least 3 times! The book has a cast of highly interesting characters, setting (late 1800's England), and the love scenes (very sensual) most of all. If you're looking for a book that will last you more than just a day or two, leaving you a deep impression with fascinating characters, then this is the book for you! This is definitely a novel that you would want occupying a space in your bookshelves!

Summary: A Great Read!
Review: When I started out reading this book, I had meant to use it only to pass the time. But when I got into the thick of it, I was actually surprised by how interesting and sensual it turned out to be. Both of the main characters- Reave and Tessa- show how interesting the situation gets when two people who dislike each other upon meeting end up, despite the friction, falling in love. The humor laced liberally throughout the book is the other best feature there besides the love scenes. Everything in the whole plot comes together perfectly, especially since the plot seems refreshing compared to the usual contemporary plots used. The book brings to mind the author Karen Robards because of the way that Ms. Pierce has structured her plot similiar to that of a mystery and suspense novel. So whatever you do and wherever you are, please do not miss out on this great novel! This is definitely a great read!
