Rating: Summary: Ain't This Book the Best!!! Review: I've read quite a few of Phillip's books. They're all wonderful, and she's one of my favorite authors. I found this
story excellent. Her books are just so amazing.
A woman returns to Parrish, Mississippi after some
trouble. At first she isn't welcome, but eventually she finds her place.
Wonderful book!!! I plan to read all of SEP's books.
I think she's of the best writers. I give this book my highest
rating of 5 stars:)
Rating: Summary: The Best Romance Novel I Ever Read Review: I've never much liked this genre of fiction but this book has definetly made me change my mind about romance novels. I have to say it is one of the best things i ever read out of many classics. I now look forward to reading the rest of Miss Phillips novels. Although it's hard not to i wont give away the ending.
Rating: Summary: Thrilling romance with so many funny scenes & lines Review: Any book that starts off each chapter with one liners from my favorite Georgette Heyer's regencies will dispell my misgivings at the offset. Let me not pretend to be too highbrow -I loved this book. Not a careful purchase, but stacked onto my library pile as a last minute addition with that sangfroid of knowing if it was a bore it would just go back next trip, no pressure... and I was predisposed to dislike it, on account of "bitchy" heroine blurb on back cover.
Summation: Improbably named Sugar Beth must return to her hometown to reclaim her inheritance.
Unfortunately she doesn't have a whole lot of friends left in the town she once dominated. And she doesn't have a whole lot of success to ride back in on. Three failed marriages behind her and the last marking her as an Anna Nicole Smith type gold digger give her a lot to be ashamed of.
What is likeable about her character is the sheer nerve with which she carries all off. I would hope I would have similar backbone, & personal honour. In a good little pointer, SB explains it as `personal power' when having a discussion with her estranged niece.
Particularly appealing is the character the author has created in Sugar Beth. OK THE NAME!!! It's bad, but you move beyond it.
I approached this book with extreme caution thinking I was going to hate the main character but in fact she shows more tolerance and humility than the people she victimized.
I loved the descriptions of small town life, and this book made it so real for me, although I have no familiarity or experience with the area's in which it is set.
There is soaring romance, and I was crying so many times as I read this book. What moved me was not some overly dramatic this person dies blah blah. Instead it was really well written scenes of the sort of day-to-day pathos everyone has to endure in their lives. The other thing is: It's Very Funny.
WARNING: YOU WILL LAUGH it's not a sad book; it's a joyful read, and I felt thrilled, happy & completed, when I completed it.
Rating: Summary: Ain't She Sweet? Review: I just bought this book last night and I just gotta finish it before I go to bed. It's such a great story. I love all of SEP's books. She is such a great write. All her stories are funny and emotional. I can't stop laughing and crying whenever I read her books.
Rating: Summary: S.E.P.'s best book since It Had to Be You! Review: I loved this book! The heroine is the sort of women 99% of people on the planet love to hate: Rich, beautiful, priveledged, arrogant, mean, irresponsible, and heartless. So SEP had a real challenge in making us care about this woman. The author doesn't take the easy way out.... Sugar Beth really IS all those vile things, but after about 50 pages or so, you are completely rooting for her. SEP manages to explain how Sugar Beth got the way she is, and the reader can not help but root for her.
The hero is also very unique. No more sports heros.... SEP has given us a somewhat effeminate but devastatingly attractive hero. Again, a real challenge to make a guy who waltzes around in a smoking jacket seem manly, but she pulls it off.
I'm often disappointed in SEP books when she tries too hard to do zany, madcap humor (Heaven Texas, First Lady, etc.) Sometimes it falls flat for me and I never really care about the characters or identify with them. But she is in fine form with this book.... it had wonderful humor but is rich with emotion at the same time.
Rating: Summary: Ain't She Sweet Review: I loved this book! It described small towns in the South to a "T". I have already told all my book loving friends to go out and buy this book. This is the first book that I have read of Susan Elizabeth Phillips but it will not be the last.
Rating: Summary: Ahhh, Take Me Away Review: Ms. Phillips has created a delightful, heartwarming story of the prodigal daughter. You will be swept away as you entered in the world of these fabulous actresses (and actors). Get your favorite beverage, pull up a comfortable chair and get taken away in Ain't She Sweet. You'll feel all her emotions.
If you're looking for a different and exciting novel, read LUST OF THE FLESH by Beverly Rolyat. A story about district attorney, Nick Allapapalaus, who finds himself caught up in a web of lust, deceit, mystery, suspense, betrayal, murder and sex galore. Is he really the biological father of his ex-wife's promiscuous teenage daughter's infant son? Or has he been set up? A compelling, riveting, engaging, pageturning novel. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Another Winner Review: Ms. Susan Elizabeth Phillip scores again. The tale is such so whimsical, unbelievably funny, and improbable that I couldn't help but keep turning the pages long into the night. I loved it! The main characters are multi-faceted, so that one truly gets to know them. I enjoy some lighthearted reading in between some of the deeper tomes I usually indulge in, so this story was truly a breath of clean air which fit that bill. Ms. Phillips is a treasure. She has great insight into understanding human frailty and emotions, thus does a great job of rationalizing and explaining Sugar Beth's self-centered persona in her younger days. Additionally, Ms. Phillips knows exactly how to redeem those same personality flaws in her characters, in this case giving us a great heroine in Ms. Sugar Beth. Kudos to you Ms. Phillips!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding.... one of her best yet Review: Sugar Beth is sassy and sarcastic and determined not to let her hometown former friends see her down. She is broke and looking for a job and determined to get her life under control again. She has been away for 15 year, had 3 husbands and has learned life the hard way. After being the town princess thru high school, people are looking for the spoiled teenager with the poison tongue and bit by bit find the true person she has become. Colin Byrne the guy she did wrong so many years ago tries to humiliate and humble her but this steel magnolia is stronger than he thinks. A very well written and wonderful read
Rating: Summary: MUST READ Review: This is the best book I have read in a long time. I could not put it down. Sugar Beth reminds you of the "in girl" you knew in highschool that loved to make other people miserable, but deep down she had reasons for her behavior. Her return to her old town to locate the painting left for her by her Aunt and her dealings with her old "friends"" the Seawillows and the former teacher, whom she got fired, is an entertaining experience that will make you laugh and cry. This book is a MUST read!
