Summary: Pass on this foolishness...
Review: Let me just say I love books that have magical themes and involve witches, etc.,. This was well written and some of the situations are truly humorous, but the book was just not well plotted and the characters were beyond foolish. Oddly enough if the element of magic were removed from this book it probably would have been better (a country bumpkin, fish out of water type story, not original but it still can be done well). The heroine is just an idiot, and NOT charming as I suppose she was intended to be. I finally gave up on her when she accepts a sleigh ride as an apology for a terrible affront from the hero. He is not much better. All in all, not a great book for fans of Barnett.

Summary: This book goes with my favorites....
Review: My first read with Jill Barnet was an absolute pleasure. I found myslef laughing out loud at some of the mishaps of Joys magic. I recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a story to raise their spirits, and warm their hearts. Buy this book you won't be dissapointed!!

Summary: Average
Review: Reminded me of a remake of 'Bewitched', but with Aunt Clara (the bird-brained one) as the wife instead of Samantha. The book had some good writing and few lovable characters, but on the whole it was pretty average. If you are an avid reader it is worth a few hours of your time; but if you need to be more selective, I would pass on this one.

Summary: La vie en rose - magical
Review: Set in London 1813. Alec Castlemaine is the no-nonsense, proud Duke of Belmore, epitome of the English aristocracy. Jilted by his carefully selected fiancée, he marries the next woman who drops into his lap. Joyous Fiona MacQuarrie, a descendant of a powerful clan of witches, finds herself a hundred miles from her intended destination and in the arms of the handsome Duke. After a whirlwind romance consisting of no more than a few stolen kisses, Joy finds herself married to the Duke. Alec has grown up with a strict upbringing and no love, so does not believe in love himself. He has taken a wife to salvage his wounded pride of being rejected by another woman. Joy could not have dreamed of a more perfect fairytale romance but what will her new husband do when she confesses that she is a witch and not a very talented one at that. And what will she feel when she discovers the truth about their fairytale romance?

Miss Barnett truly knows how to weave a magical story filled with humour and romance. Joy is an endearing heroine who never fails to be amazed by the life that surrounds her. "I see a silver lake that reflects the color of the sky and shines like polished serving plates" is her description of the Serpentine Lake during a sleigh ride across Hyde Park. Her less than admirable witchcraft skills gets her into trouble often enough, giving rise to occasions for the reader to laugh out loud, as does her naivety. Alec is one of those heroes with a tortured soul and who needs a good woman to fill his heart with love and trust. Always the ultimate challenge for the heroine of a romance novel. If you like your romance novels with sensual love scenes you will not be disappointed by Miss Barnett. The ending will leave a warm glow in your heart and pink rose petals fluttering around.

Summary: Full of fun and wit. Will make you laugh aloud.
Review: Set mostly in the year 1814, Joyous "Joy" Fiona MacQuarie was half mortal and half white witch. She had been raised and taught by her aunt, The MacLean, since her parents had died. No matter how hard she tried though, she could not master her magic. So often something went wrong. When her aunt had to go to America for awhile, Joy was to teleport herself to a relative's cottage. She and Beezle (a weasel - her familiar) ended up in the lap of Alec Castlemaine, Duke of Belmore.

Alec was the fifteenth Duke of Belmore. His father had made sure that Alec took the role seriously - too seriously! Everyone knew his coldness, even his two closest buddies, the Earl of Downe and Viscount Seymour, and all except Downe and Seymour feared him. Alec's fiancé had just ran off a day before their wedding. To stop gossip and soothe his pride, Alec married Joy.

Joy had tried to tell Alec she was a witch, before they married, but he refused to listen. His kisses dazzled her and before she could say, "Oh my goodness" they were wed. From then on Alec's world was never the same. [...]... a little magical mayhem in his dreary world.

***** I have fallen in LOVE with this author! In fact, I plan to search Barnett's back list in hopes of finding a story for Letitia. Pick up this title on your next awful day and watch your day get better quickly. Therre is just no way one can NOT laugh and enjoy such a book as this!

Summary: BEYOND COMPARE!
Review: The Author: Jill Barnett has a way of weaving a story out of nothing. She can make any situation funny and usually does. At a time in my life when I really needed some laughter, this book was recommended to me and it lifted my spirits more than I can say. You can pick up any Jill Barnett book and absolutely love it - but I think this is the best of the lot! This is a story of a bumbling witch and an English Duke. She fell into his arms and he fell into her heart. Hilarious doesn't cover it. When Alec finds out his beauty is a witch all hell breaks loose! Joyous Fiona MacQuarrie was the type of heroine that you just root for. You want her to win, you want her to have everything she ever dreamt of... but you don't ever pity her - she doesn't give you the chance, you're too busy laughing at all of the things she does! Beauty is only part of her charm, actually you forget what she looks like most of the time because of her bumbling and fumbling! When she tries to cast a spell, watch out! ROTFL! Alec Castlemaine, Duke of Belmore. He is the perfect Duke. He is gorgeous, he has class and he never ever smiles - until a certain beauty storms into his life (actually falls into it)! Control-freak is the only way to describe Alec and unfortunately for him Joy is uncontrollable! Watch him transform from the stern and noble Duke to the sweet and gentle husband! He is the perfect straight man to Joy's antics. You can't help falling in love with him. I would have to say that he is one of my very favorite dukes. Beezle (Joy's weasel) is hysterical! The rose petals when they make love is a beautiful touch. Richard and Neil are the perfect friends for Alec (and great secondary characters) and Stephen is wonderful!

Summary: Average Romance, but funny circumstances!
Review: The book reminds me of the TV series 'Bewitched', but Joy is a little 'too happy' for me sometimes. It is a little hard to believe that she would fall in love so quickly without knowing Alec at all. Although usually I enjoy a funny romance, I find Joy to be a little spinless and silly.

Summary: average--good writing, annoying heroine
Review: there is nothing i despise more in a romance than a bad heroine. she ruins the whole book for me. if Joy was written better--actually, been a different person altogether-- i would have liked Bewitching a lot. but the girl (i can't call her a woman) is a brainless fool who can't keep her promises. my teeth were grinding as she kept repeating "oh my goodness" throughout the book. i wanted to strangle her as she continued to defy her husband's orders not to use magic. ok, defiance isn't bad, but breaking her promise notto use magic is. I cannot abide by a person who cannot keep a promise. once she did that, it was all over. i could not stand her. and she was TOO happy. i like happy heroines (ala Garwood) but this girl was annoyingly happy. she saw weird things in everything. moonbeams in daylight? huh? and what was with the elm tree? hug it and it gives you strength! uhh..... she was inept, a crybaby, and just annoying. the hero, on the other hand, was good and so were the supporting characters. but i never go for the "love at first sight" thing.

Summary: Humorous!
Review: This book is a book I would recommend to my friends. It has many humorous moments I love. The story is well-written and great in overall. However, I agree with some of the readers on the heroine's characteristics. Sometimes Joy could be very nonsense and childish, but then these characteristics are balanced by the hero's sterness and seriousness. The other reason I don't give this book a five-star is for its too easy ending. It's true that the ending does have some heart-aching, but things resolve somehow too easy and wrap up way too quickly. Compare to her work in the book, I think Barnett can certainly do better than that. Anyway, as I say, overall the book is wonderful. It's great. I would definitely recommend it to my friend. If you like something light and full of good sense of humor, this book is a great one for you. Give it a try, you might find yourself lovign it as I do.

Summary: Humorous and Fun
Review: This book is very fun to read. It will make you laugh along with the plot and give you some achy-feeling in your heart along with the characters. However, I give in an 8 for the rating for its characters' development and the plot at the end. I agree with the reader from TX, at times Joyous can be too naive, very childish and nonsense. Moreoever, the plot at the end seems to be a little bit disturbingly too easy. Yet, overall I would recommend you to read the book. Joyous's childish characteristics tends to be compensated by the Duke's sterness. It's far better than many of the romance books I have read.
