Review: After twenty-two years of marriage, widow Darci Cunnigham begins her new life on Mackinac Island hoping to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an author. Still grieving, Darci longs for the healing the island provides, little suspecting the danger that lurks nearby. Meanwhile, she learns to live again when she meets photojournalist Tyler Landston.

Tyler comes to Mackinack Island to capture images of its residents for his employers who are writing a book. Accustomed to moving throughout the world, Tyler has never had a desire to settle in one place. But when he meets Darci, Tyler finds himself longing for more than his rolling stone ways. Unfortunately, his inability to talk about the past makes him look terribly suspicious and causes a rift between himself and Darci.

One of the greatest pleasures of small presses is the refreshingly "real" stories one encounters. Imperfect, older heroines who love and grieve and gain second chances provide the depth and maturity many readers seek in their heroines. Certainly author Pamela Johnson understands the need for unconventional heroines as shown in this first book of the Shores of Mackinac Series. TIDES OF AUTUMN captures the poignancy of loss and the promise of new beginnings even as danger lurks only a moment away. Johnson's ability to create a place replete with magic and rich in nuance makes TIDES OF AUTUMN come very highly recommended.

Summary: Wonderful Vacation Read
Review: Darci Cunningham is still trying to adjust to the loss of her husband of twenty-two years. Darci is grieving for the love of a man who had completed her life and is now trying to start a new life and a fresh start to fulfill a dream of becoming a published author. Her choice to come and live on Mackinac Island was also part of the dream that she had shared with her husband Matt - having discovered the island's charm on their honeymoon so many years before. With grown children in college, she was alone but for the presence of her delightful cousin Maevey, renowned matchmaker of Mackinac island.

Tyler Landston, 39-year-old bachelor and jet setting photographer was assigned by his publishers a project to come and photograph the island for a big pictorial coffee table book. Handsome and successful, he was used to being pursued but after a brief but delightful conversation and then a good look he knew he wanted to be the pursuer! With a little help from Maevey the matchmaker and a couple of fateful accidents Tyler and Darci would soon become better acquainted. As the attraction and passion builds for both, trouble and danger in the form of an old family friend threatens to derail their budding romance.

The plot was enjoyable along with a marvelous location. It was filled with passionate and emotional feelings the author injects into this most excellent read. You felt Darci's grief over the loss of what she had considered her `life mate' as the author depicted that twenty-year-old marriage as solid, protective and loving. Fortunate to have experienced such a loving marriage, Darci's guilt over feeling such a strong and sensual attraction to Tyler was skillfully written, as was the hinted `other side' of the trusted family friend. This was a very enjoyable read in a setting brought to life so skillfully that I predict will have most readers checking their travel agencies excursions in order to experience an island setting themselves and maybe, just possibly, find their own special someone in this very romantic setting.

Summary: Finally a story where the characters aren't too young
Review: I loved this story. The characters and situations, drama and heartfelt prose were all totally believable...but the main reason I enjoyed it was because Ms. Johnson has written characters that are actually older and are portrayed as bright and capable with lives still left to live. She has given real meaning to the words, 'a second chance at love'.

A great read for the rest of us tired of painfully making our way through romances for the under thirty-something crowd! Thanks for a wonderful book. - Candace Sams, National Readers' Choice winner
